    Default beansprouts

hi all..i've used the search thing but nothing regarding beansprouts has come up.

i've bought several bags of beansprouts and each one has said clearly that they mustn't be consumed raw (capital letters no less)

    anyone know why?
i'm gonna continue eating them raw cos i'm not dead yet

I've never seen anything like that on beansprouts before.

from wikipedia (that bastion of slightly-dodgy information):

Some legumes can contain toxins, which can be reduced by soaking, sprouting and cooking (eg, stir frying). Joy Larkcom, advises that to be on the safe side “one shouldn’t eat large quantities of raw legume sprouts on a regular basis, no more than about 550g (20oz) daily”.[1]

There have been some food poisoning scares (esp to do with e. coli) associated with sprouted seeds - however, it doesn't seem to be very common. See

I would be tempted to write to the growers and ask why they have put this warning on their product.

okay gang..i've just phoned the coop customer hotline woman. she says the reason why they recommend blanching them is becaus they've been grown in 'moist conditions' (no shit...) so there might be 'residual bacteria'. blanching would kill it all off and that.

    righto.

I think if you eat more than 550g of pretty much any one thing in a day you're gonna feel a bit dodgy.

Residual bacteria? Just adds to the flavour doesn't it?

isn't there 'residual bacteria' on just about any food you might end up eating?

i'd rather like to think there is.
it sounded a bit crap when she was saying it.

Did you see that FSA report I posted a link to, Emma? It sounds as if there have been a few instances of contaminated sprouts but the risk sounds relatively low, particularly if you give them a good wash. Food vendors tend to try and cover their backs don't they?

In a sprouting book I've got, the author said that certain sprouts should be worked up to gradually (eating raw that is) as they are high in vitaility. they were the bigger sprouts like aduki, mung.

What the bally heck does that mean?

I must say though that after eating a big plate of mung, aduki and chickpea, lightly stir fried with chilli, ginger, etc.... both hubbie and I felt a bit funny. Kind of spacy like we'd had a big night out.

Can anyone shed light on the power (I'm assuming that's what is meant by vitality) of some of the bigger sprouts. I eat lots of alfalfa with no probs, but have been put of some of the bigger ones.

Could it be that I hadn't rinsed them well enough?

I miss cooked quinoa so tonight I've put some quinoa in to sprout - it will be interesting to see what they look like in a few days.

I have been perusing old threads can you tell - it is truly amazing to see how people have changed in such a short period of time. And also heartening to note that we all start at the beginning and grow in our vegan knowledge supported by each other. It's good here innit?
