Question vegan or non-vegan food list?

I'm trying really hard to make the transition but I'm finding that "decoding"
ingredients is tricky. Is there a list of things considered vegan ingredients and those that are not? Someone said that honey and wheat aren't and that's something I never would have thought of so I'm wondering what else I've missed.

Wheat is vegan, it comes from a plant.

Honey, however isn't. Bees are animals; therefore honey is an animal product, which vegans avoid.

See here, here and here for more information.

I'm sure someone else will come along soon to give you some more guidance .

Hello there. Basically anything from a plant is vegan and anything made from or by an animal isn't. (Generalisations are dangerous but I think that one is OK!)

As regards ingredients with incomprehensible names, you might have to refer to a list like this: http://vegan-info.com/additives.html . (I can't vouch for that particular list but all the ones I'm familiar with are a bit Euro-specific unfortunately, and I don't think our E-numbers are meaningful where you are.)

Life is simpler if you make most of your own food from fruits, vegetables etc., and then you don't need to read as many ingredients lists.

Puzzled now about why your friend would have thought wheat isn't vegan...
