Great day! Very successful event. The Leeds Veg group managed to raise good amount of money for the sanctuary.

It was great to meet EmmaPresley!!! Glad you came.

Good to meet Kevster too. Together we scoffed cakes, the repurcussions of which will be seen on scales tomorrow!

A very enjoyable day, surrounded by lots of cool people, some cute horses and ponies and the most adorable turkeys!! Had a great day selling (and eating) cakes, painting faces and wandering around in the sunshine.

As has already been mentioned, way, way too much cake today Chocolate, chocolate raspberry, brownie, lemon, ginger, carrot and banana, and the most heavenly mango cake I have ever tasted...

Great to see Kev again, and to eat his cakes. And was a pleasure to meet Emma Presley for the first time ever - she is even cooler in real life

Just to mention i was in Arkadash today in Headingley, Leeds. (Just down form the wholefood shop) Dropping off a Bristol Vegan Fayre poster, it's well worth a visit and they do some fair trade vegan chocolate too...

    http://www.arkadash.co.uk/

I bought some bamboo socks from there today, and they do loads of fair trade/organic shirts/trousers/dresses whatever else... I met the bamboo guy at the Southampton vegan fayre, and said i'd pop in and say hello.

We offered some suggestions to our friendly head-chef/manager at Artis restaurant in Leeds. He was very thankful for our suggestions. The menu at Artis restaurant will soon be made vegan friendly. We have always loved the food there.

Artis will soon be opening a new branch in Chapeltown (near old police station). We have been promised that the menu will include a large selection of items marked as vegan.

Just been along to the Kirkstall Abbey fayre, there was a Leeds leaflet stall, and Sammy did cakes, after a 24 hour marathon baking session for this event and another...

I started with the cheesecake which was excellent and then had a piece of chocolate biscuit cake, i then was given a piece of lemon cake and loads of crumbs, (a cake and a bits worth) of cake de chocolat.... so pretty stuffed.
Also had a bit of a raw chocolate and goji berry truffle.

Also had some bhajis and samosas from the Hansas stall!

    All good!

Wink Re: Vegan friendly cafes, restaurants etc in Leeds

Hello all, this is my first post on the forum but I've got a fair bit of info for you to digest so I hope you don't all keel over dead from reading this.

    1. Beano's closing & Alternatives being developed
    2. Vegan food in Leeds
    3. Vegan food AROUND Leeds

    BEANO'S

Yes, Beano's basically got stuck in a difficult situation after being forced to move by the council so they can do up the Grand Theater. they were not paid nearly enough compensation for the move and after having to pay out for various surveys on potential new properties they ended up with a financial hole they never quite managed to recover from. You will notice that they have not actually done anything with the previous Beano's shop space to date. Here are some quotes from those involved...

    Hi all,
This is just a quick update, as I'm pretty worn out. Sadly,
despite all our (and your) best efforts, we went into liqudation
yesterday. We weren't able to warn people this was going to happen, as
it came about very quickly (within a few days) and we were strongly
advised against telling anyone in case the landlords got wind of it
and came in and seized all the goods, leaving us with nothing to try
and pay things off. As it happens, it seems most of our suppliers
won't really get anything paid off what we owe them, which to us, as
individuals running an ethical business, feels like the worst thing
ever. I can't tell you how awful this makes me feel and if I ever come
into money then I will pay off every penny personally. These are other
ethical companies who have been very good to us, and many of whom have
individuals we know, respect and like within them, and we are closing
owing them (sometimes fairly substantial amounts of) money. This could
have a knock on effect on some of their businesses. It's just
    horrible.
There are so many levels this is such a shame on, for everyone
involved (us, the suppliers and you, the customers and friends, the
co-operative movement as a whole), but it had reached the point where,
despite all the massive effort we'd put into it, the business just
wasn't sustainable any more without a large injection of capital. As
many of you know, we'd been trying to get a loan (we'd already
received the £6000 grant from United Co-ops and £895 from Tangram
Housing Co-op, which they specified we use on members' wages, happily
for us, as Jim and myself had been delaying wages for several months
to try and stock the shop, and we're very grateful indeed for these).
We were waiting to get two years worth of accounts signed off before
we could apply for the loan. Our accountant came out at the start of
June and audited us for 2005's accounts, but they then decided they
wanted paying for that year before they'd do 2006's accounts. This was
understandable, as they obviously saw the state of the finances. We
didn't have a chance of paying this, and it kind of felt like the
death blow to us, as it would mean the loan would take even longer, if
indeed we even got it, and we were honestly struggling so much to try
and keep the shop stocked, as those of you who've been in lately will
have seen (we've been paying cash on delivery for practically
everything, which has made things increasingly difficult). Jim and I
could only keep on working such long hours for no money (or a reduced
wage) for a limited amount of time, and none of us really felt we
could see a way out of it. We had all got quite despondent and it's
been very hard to keep going throughout all of this, despite how much
we love Beano and want it to exist. Some of us are just so worn out,
as the last few months have really taken their toll, emotionally,
physically and mentally. And then we were advised that we really
shouldn't keep trading in the situation we were in, as we could get in
trouble personally if things kept getting worse, so this is why it's
    all happened so quickly.
However, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. Jim and
I had a meeting tonight with two people who are interested in buying
the assets (i.e. stock and fixtures and fittings) and keeping the
place open. This would mean that it would no longer be a workers'
co-op (which makes me really sad), but at least the shop would still
be going, and run along all the same ethical principles as before,
just with a bit more money and business expertise behind it. The
potential buyers would want to keep staff on and keep the shop running
very similarly to before, just with improvements. However, they
wouldn't be able to invest enough to take on the debt, so that would
still leave us in an awful position with suppliers, but we feel that
if we could at least give them continued trade, with the added
security of having some money behind us to put into and develop the
business (which is what it has needed all along since we've moved, and
is why it's failed without that), then at least they would be able to
recoup some of their losses over time. This really is the best case
scenario, for us, our creditors and you all, and we don't yet know if
it will work out, but we're hopeful. The meeting today went well and
they seemed to like our business plan and trust us, but we won't know
any more until early next week.
I'll keep everyone informed with updates via this group (although
there are a lot of names in the Beano suggestion book that I need to
add to the list and I will try and do that this weekend, in between
getting all the accounts fully up to date for either the liquidators,
or the buyers, depending on what happens). I want to thank all of you
for all the time, money, goodwill and love you've all given to Beano
and those of us who work there, and let you know how much we
appreciate you. If we've looked a little fed up or been a bit less
smiley lately, you now know why. I'm so sorry about all of this, as I
know what a disappointment it must be to many of you, and it's
wonderful to know that so many people care about Beano as much as I
do, but let's stay hopeful that we can stay open, albeit in a form we
may not have chosen, but one that we can still do a lot of good things
    with.
Well, so much for that being a short email! I'll be in touch soon.
    Hope everyone is well.
    Simone (and all at Beano)

P.S. I'm sorry if I haven't been in touch with some of you personally,
but it's just been such a whirlwind few days and I've been working so
many hours. Also, my head is like mush from all the emotion, so it's
sometimes been too hard to talk about. But I'll be in touch with those
of you I know personally very soon. Once again, thanks for all your
    support.

And an update about alternatives they are trying to establish, GET INVOLVED!

As many of you know, Beano went into liquidation a week ago,
and we've been negotiating with two possible buyers since then. The
plan was for them to buy the stock, fixtures and fittings and put some
money in to try and turn things around. They wanted the staff to still
run everything, but with their added expertise (they are both
    successful businessmen).
Unfortunately, we learned late this afternoon that they were not
able to go through with the deal, as three other investors they were
trying to get involved didn't go for it, so the whole thing is off,
and we are having to close for good. The liquidators want us to open
up the shop again and have a big closing down sale, as they feel this
is the best way to get the most money from the assets so we can try
and give something to our creditors.
So this means that we will be open again (with reduced hours) from
tomorrow (Friday), and all goods will be 30% off marked price. If you
spend more than £50, you'll get an extra 10% off. Please come along
and get some bargains while you can! We really really appreciate your
support and custom over the years, especially over these last
difficult few months, and are very sad that we're not going to be here
for you all to come to any more.
We will be opening on Friday from 10am-3pm, then on Saturday,
Monday and Tuesday from 10am-4pm or 5pm, and possibly a couple of days
after that. Basically, once the stock has gone, we will close down.
Also, all of the fixtures and fittings will be for sale, so make us an
offer if you want anything in the shop! The liquidators will consider
all offers and won't be expecting very high prices. I think we will be
selling the shelving units for £15 each.
One thing I'd like to suggest that might help a few people out, is
the idea that a bunch of us who are interested get together and make
regular orders from Lembas in sheffield. They are one of our main
suppliers, and are really lovely people with a brilliant ethical
business. They deliver to Leeds every Thursday, and deliver to housing
and food co-ops, as well as shops. Their minimum order is £150 for
non-trade people, which I'm sure we could easily cover every 2-3
weeks, or monthly, depending on how many people were in on it. Also,
this means getting the goods at trade prices. It also often means
ordering in bulk, although they are happy to split quite a lot of
items. You can read more about them and their products and terms on
their website, which is http://www.lembas.co.uk. Having continued
trade from customers of Beano would also be very goods for them, as we
closed owing them a lot of money, and this would help them recoup
their losses. I'm not sure where we would get everything delivered,
and it might be better to have a few small local groups than one big
one, depending on delivery size, but my colleague Jon suggested we ask
The Common Place, on Wharf Street in lLeeds
(http://www.thecommonplace.org.uk) if we could use them as a drop off
and collection point. I believe they already do orders with Lembas. If
we were to do this, we would need to have a volunteer rota as to who
would be there for delivery and to sort out when people could collect
their goods, but I think it could be a really good way of still being
able to get all the lovely stuff we all like to buy, at a cheaper
price, and also a way of keeping a little community of Beano
ex-workers and customers going. Let me know what you all think...
Ok, iI'm absolutely worn out by today, so I'm going to sleep now,
but I just wanted to let you all know the situation and thank you all
for your help and support. It has meant so much to all of us, and kept
us going at times when it's been so hard it would have been easier to
give up. Take care and I hope to see all or some of you soon.
    simone xo
You can sign up to the common place mailing (link as above) list to get updates on this situation, not sure the friends of Beano's one is being updated or not (thats linked at the end of the 1st quote above).

    VEGAN FOOD IN LEEDS

OK: Here are some places you can eat vegan grub in Leeds...

Roots n' Fruits (Queens Arcade? - The one on upper briggate)
A friendly enough cafe. I happen to like the burger n chips a lot but people I eat there with think the place is a bit lacklustre and could do much better, although they like the food. Worth a try for something quick and easy. It's veggie / vegan, clearly labelled and I like their coffee too!

Fairuz (by the Merrion Centre, under Fairfax House)
Unassumingly placed at the base of a concrete office block, this place serves Lebanese cuisine in a simple surrounding and at a decent price. It serves meat dishes but the majority of veggie offerings are vegan. A decent selection of dishes for vegans, the aubergine dip thing (babaganoush???) is fantastic. The proprietor seems to like me, very friendly! I think because I ask lots of questions about the food haha! They have lovely wines but I have no idea if they are vegan or not (I fail horribly at vegan alcohol pickiness). Assume not. I don't think anything is labeled vegan but it's quite obvious what is and isn't, and you can happily ask if you have doubt's.

    Hansas (North Street)
Plenty of talk about this already. Veggie/vegan. I always found the food a bit bland to be honest, although they are very accommodating and understanding of vegan requirements.

    Bobbys (Roundhay Road)
If you like (onion) pakoras and samosas, and can nip up Roundhay road during a lunchtime, you really ought to try this guys snacks. When they are fresh they are truly sensational! Basically call him and find out when the next batch are being served and get there to collect them fresh from the kitchen... you won't regret it! Call them on 0113 249 0205. They also do a nice selection of curries for £3.50, bargain! I practically live off the Dall and Rice since I work opposite this place.

Khadas (side of the Corn Exchange)
Mediterranean grub. Not a lot on offer but open quite late. The veggie platter is vegan and you get the usual medditeranean veg, houmous and toasted pitta's. Nice simple and tasty! Much better than getting some dirty chips after a session at the pub.

Out of this World (Opposite Corn Exchange)
It's a wholefood shop but has a nice selection of pasties, sarnies and savoury snacks. Thank goodness this ones still going now Beano's is gone...

    Salsa Mexicana (Chapel Allerton)
When I lived up there, me and my ex would go about once a fortnight for a nice big burrito! I think there's only one vegan option on the menu (ask for no sour cream) but if you like to stuff yourself with delicious mexican grub its a winner! Totally cool staff there too and free spicy nuts on the table which we used to fight over so they never lasted long!

Note: I was veggie at the time and often got a cheesy / sour cream laden thing, but my ex LOVED the vegan burrito. I did too but mostly ate the cheesy chimichanga, this was about 3 years ago mind you.

    VEGAN FOOD AROUND LEEDS

The Cheerful Chilli (East Chevin Rd, Otley) - 01943 466567
A ramblers tea room during the day, this place is absolutely my favourite place to eat EVER. It's mostly mexican themed with a fair share of yams and sweet potatoes going around. It's all done in a nice home-cooked style that is absolutely delicious and no-nonsense. The helpings are nice and big too. The prices are great for individual meals but this place really comes into it's element when you make a group booking (you can specify vegan or veggie) at £14 a head. you start off with a couple of starters that get quickly devoured, then a couple more starters, then they bring various main courses and sooner of later theres a table full of a great variety of delicious food. The main chef makes these fantastically rich cakes too, the chocolate cake looks like an erupting volcano (it always goes 'wrong' apparently, but it's delicious!) It's bring your own wine/booze (with corkage). Bear in mind though that even with only word of mouth advertising going for it, you have to book at least a month in advance for a mid-week sitting, or about 3 months in advance for a weekend! It really is amazing!

    Dandelion and Burdock (Sowerby Bridge)
    http://www.dandelionandburdock.uk.com/
Although the menu mentions 'sour cream' and 'cheese', its Vegan owned and it's all locally sourced / organic wherever possible. EVERYTHING HERE is vegan! It also happens to be delicious. Bookings are most probably required although it was nice and quiet when I went last Thursday. I've only been once and theres no menu on the website so I'm not sure if it changes often or not. I had a tofu - salad with peppers, nuts, chickpeas and leafy goodness. We had yam wedges in vegan sour cream which were delicious! I didn't realise the sour cream was vegan at the time, only found out after my visit so I missed out and will HAVE to go again to address this error! Very friendly staff and a lovely little restauraunt.

    El Piano (York)
    http://elpiano.seventyfour.co.uk/
This place has so many options on offer that you just won't believe it. They have nice function rooms you can book out too for events. The staff are the most enthusiastic, friendly and personable people I have ever met, seriously! Book the whole of the upstairs and take 30 people, its great.
Theres a nice variety of mexican, indian, mediterranean and all sorts. You are really spoilt for choice here.

Hope that was of use to some... I'm not much of a restaurant critic but these are all worth taking the time to check out. You can always phone up if you want to check the particular menus at the time!

    [edit]

Gah! I forgot to mention the following, although my fingers are now bleeding anyhow...

The common place, Org, Just Bean, Dine China, Little Tokyo (AVOCADO TEMPURAAAA!), that organic shop in Chapel Allerton, that mediterranean place opposite the duck and drake, the Grove cafe, Pizza Cano near the Hyde Park Picture House...)

Went along to the Northern Green Gathering today:

    http://www.nggonline.org.uk/

It's not in Leeds, but not far away.... Pontefract, a short cycle ride from the station. There's various things going on, looked good for kids. Veggies are there! So i ate two hemp burgers and two pieces of chocolate cake, so i was pretty happy.

It's a good location and lovely in the Sun.

Went over to see Kiran and Rachel tonight for some pakoras and stir fry, very good food. I was of course expecting a mountain of Italian chocolate, but where had it all gone?

Stuffed my face in Saltaire today and not sure i'm quite done yet...

Kiran and Rachel came along, Kiran had crumbs all down his front! What a waste!

Two events coming up in October including one at the Horse and pony sanctuary that ought to be really good (October 21st), and one at The Common Place in Leeds (October 7th) where there'll be a tonne of vegan food available.

In between and around that i'll be visiting Herbies in Exeter and Tree House in Bradford. It is a hectic schedule but i think i am up to it.

    It's a small world!

We did stop by at Magic Number Three - albeit only briefly. We intended to take a walk and then come back for a coffee, but it was closed

We're off to the Tree House too in a couple of weeks

Ventured across the pennines to make my first visit to The Common Place for the World Animal Day Extravaganza today. Went out of my way to get there too, due to rail engineering work, and the fact I hate this city. Still, I looked soooo out of place it's unreal.

Anyway, listened to a gripping talk by fellow Manc, Keith Mann, and observed a raw food cooking demonstration...with samples. Had a cherry-topped cake by Blue Lotus, Ginger cake, falafel, potato salad, Peppermint and Grapefruit Green tea, a little Chocolate Crunchie ball, Blackcurrant cake, Carrot and Lemon muffin, and a gingerbread man. All for good causes....is my excuse. I won a T-shirt on the raffle too (...never won a raffle prize before etc.)!

I saw Kevster, Kiran & RachelJune. Not a single Yorkshire accent between them (oh, the irony!). They all seem to have some kind of 'vegan glow' about them though. I'm still stunned that I saw Kevster serving cake instead of living up to his reputation of scoffing it!

Couldn't find a Vegan Leeds thread to post in so this is going here... What good places to eat are there in Leeds, either for lunch or earlyish evening meal (about 5-6pm)? I was thinking of going to the Viva veggie roadshow on the 24th and having a bit of a wander round the city centre.

Also, does anyone know if Out of this World are currently selling vegan stuffed pasta? Someone on here told me a while ago that they sold it there, and I haven't found anywhere else near me that sells it so was thinking of trying to get some from there.

Went to the Treehouse Café in Bradford last month. Had some soup, salad and apple pie but wasn't really impressed, especially when pulling a strand of hair that was stuck in the lettuce out of my mouth! The soya hot chocolate was nice though. Anyway, gave it another go and had the winter vegatable soup, stem ginger cake, and vegan chocolate caramel square. Nice! They had a good selection of desserts on that day. I like all the ethical principles they practice too.

Also went to the World Peace Café in Halifax. I was too late for any of the specials, wich I think were all vegan, but had the Pea and Mint soup with rye bread which was really tasty. Nice little café.

Popped into The Bear in Todmorden (a co-operative health food shop and café) and had 'The Bear Special' (hummus, pittas, olives and salad). It was OK, but I wouldn't call it 'special'. The menu was more veggie than vegan though.

Last week, I decided to seek out the South Square Vegaetarian Café in Thornton, West Bradford. In my hopeless attempts to find the correct bus stop, I looked at the map and saw Thronton Road coming out of the city centre thinking it can't be that far, so I'll walk it. .......It turns out Thornton Road is one of those never-ending roads and I ended up in Thornton after an 80 minute walk. I arrived at South Square just in time for last orders at 2.30pm! Phew! I had the vegetable crumble with salad. Very nice but pricey. Didn't get chance to look round the art gallery or craft shop though.

Later the same day, I went to Dandelion and Burdock in Sowerby Bridge. The temptation to go to a totally vegan restaurant was too much too resist! Can't fault it on presentation and décor. Looks the part of a high class restaurant along with a first class dining experience. Good if you want to impress or amaze someone. I had the Artichoke Heart Ravioli (£8.00), and Apple and Blackberry Crumble with 'custard' (£4.00). I'm no food expert, but I suppose it was of pretty good quality but nothing to shout about. I guess the service was quite slow, but I was the first customer and I think its all made from scratch. But the portions are waaaay to small at an extortionate price, in my opinion. If you've got an income, plenty of time, and some company, then it should be OK. I think?

    Now I'm virtually penniless.

The Leeds Viva! roadshow was great! Really enjoyed it. Helped out a bit in the freezing cold morning handing out fliers and holding a placard. Then went in for a cake picnic! And little bits of food and drink, and ice-cream!!! (after i'd warmed up obviously) And RachelJunes ice-cream because she was too full form other stuff!!!!!!

It was just about the right sort of busy, wasn't rammed and you could take your time looking around at the different things, got some chocolate buttons, lovely pig cards and a soft toy duck!!!!!! (not for me)

Just got back from a decent trip to Dandelion and Burdocks in Sowerby Bridge. Had part of an avocado, pickle, cajun tofu sandwich to start (that someone else couldn’t manage) i then had a Tuscan pasty with a light spring onion mash, that was very tasty after i ejected the kalamata olives, then it was mango cheesecake with chocolate sauce that was excellent and a shared piece of carrot cake, yum! A hot chocolate to finish went down pretty well too.

Beforehand the Leeds veg group descended on the Tia greyhound trust and took one of the dogs for a walk. They have a no kill policy, and most of the dogs they get in are strays, abandoned by the industry.

For a great interview on no kill shelters:

    Yo people.

The Hope Pastures horse and pony sanctuary open day is on Sunday May 18th between 10.30 and 15.00. There'll be vegan food provided by the Leeds veggie and vegan group (feel free to bring some cakes) and plenty of stalls raising money for the sanctuary. It'll also be a chance to meet up with the horses, ponies, donkeys and turkeys that are currently living there.
