has anybody got a hotel to recommend in Paris. Preferably small and cheap (not a chain though)
sorry, no.
Harpy : no taxi ! seriously you can quickly pay a good amount of euros when you take one, and the traffic is horrible, trust me it'll go quicker if you take the metro. that's what most of us parisians do. when in Rome...
besides, at the Bercy station you can either take the line 6 or 14, which are good lines in terms of where they take you.
Aradia, I mentioned my two budget hotels, Grands Balcons and St Andre des Arts, further up the thread. I don't think either is part of a chain. We're off to the first one next week actually. The St Andre des Arts is the cheaper but doesn't have a lift so I can't stay there with my ancient mother.
Aurore, agreed, I certainly wasn't recommending a taxi! I sometimes get them, mainly when I'm with the aforementioned mother and have a lot of luggage, but I agree the metro (or RER) is normally preferable.
maybe this could interest someone, a new St Christopher's inn just opened in Paris.
here's a link with more details (in french, the english version has less details).
here's the adress :
St Christopher's inn
68-74 quai de la Seine 75019 Paris
Metro : Crimée, Riquet (line 7) and Laumière (line 5).
apparently it costs 25€/night.
Hi all,
I'm going to Paris soon and am looking for a good vegan restaurant near the city centre.
Also, I'm looking for a place that makes vegan sandwiches/take-aways...
Any tips?
Thanks,
Hi sleepy_cat, have a look here....
Vegan Paris
Vegan France
Thanks,
But does anyone have any recommendations as to where to go?
I've read all the reviews, but like with everything, there are some good, and some bad...
Some of those posts are a few years old as well, so I'm looking for more updated info.
We're camping!!
That gives us more money to spend on food, not a big hotel!

Le Potager du Marais is still my favourite of the ones I've been to. I haven't had a chance to go there recently but I've been to Le Grenier de Notre-Dame a couple more times, and it's still kind of boring, but reliable (only make sure you tell them you're vegan otherwise they may dump non-vegan salad dressing even on a dish advertised as vegan). Guen Mai near the Bvd St Germain is nice for lunchtimes and does takeaways I think. (N.b. none of these is exclusively vegan and Guen Mai may serve fish.)
I don't know any places for vegan sandwiches but there are a few falafel bars and Lebanese takeways, especially in the Latin Quarter (more falafel bars in the Marais).
Im dreaming of Paris. Was going to go this holiday but now im moving and cant afford it. Gutter. Whats the reality? Is it verrrrrrry beautiful and romantic or is it just another city with the eiffel tower chucked in. Lol.
If i keep a green bough in my heart my singing bird will come.
I think it is quite beautiful, certainly in places. Central Paris has a lot more old buildings than London (not saying much, admittedly!) and some of the old streets, e.g. in the Latin Quarter, look fantastic, despite having a lot of tourists in them. So do the quays alongside the river.
Whether it's romantic probably depends a bit on the purpose of your visit You do get some annoyances and hassles, same as in any big city.
Oh my gods, we're going in three weeks time!!!!!!!!!!! We're driving down
Born to Lose - Live to Win!
I heard the splendid restaurant "La victoire supreme du coeur" has recently moved elsewhere. Does anyone know where it is now? I wouldn´t like to miss it, as in my last visit to Paris it was by far the best veggie in the city.
i found their website
they're located rue du Bourg Tibourg (numbers 27-31), 75004, Metro Hotel de ville (line 1).
woohoo ! i might actually go there, there's my fave tea store in the same street !
exactly. the Latin Quarter, well, if you want to meet a friend and you're a student, very often it's "meet at Saint Michel" it's also near Notre Dame.
Montmartre is my special love, so romantic ! gotta have solid shoes because it's a hill, lol. lots of stairs
the quays are great, with all the bouquinistes there i find it quite peaceful.
I'm going to Paris next month. I have been there before obviously but it was when I was vegetarian and I ate at a Lebanese place. I will probably end up going to Maoz now I know it's there. Potager du Marais sounds nice.
i finally tested La victoire suprême du coeur. i really like the peaceful atmosphere. the menu (in french and english) was mouth watering, so of course my accomplice and i already have decided we would go back .
the "before or during" meals are really satisfying, unless you're particularly hungry that day.
Hi there
I'm flying to Paris in a couple of days, I'll be staying at the latin arrondissement and I was wondering which if the nearest health store or any place that sells vegan products around. and also, which soy milk companies are available in Paris? are there any Alpros?
thanks and any other tip would be most welcomed
"I think, therefore I'm vegan"
With Alpro being a Belgian company i'm sure it'll be easy to get in Paris, it certainly is in Holland and Germany.
Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty!
Hi Kalia,
this link gives a list of natural food stores in Paris. Here in Italy at least, most supermarkets - even the smaller ones - stock soya milk, although it's generally the bigger places that sell Alpro. It's widely available here, don't know about France though.
Have fun in Paris!
Hello. I don't normally bother with soya milk much when I'm there but there is a health food shop called Guen Mai round the back of St Germain that I imagine would have it. This place is a macrobiotic (and vegan-friendly) cafe as well.
http://www.happycow.net/reviews.php?id=867
The Monoprix in the Rue de Rennes (near the Bvd St Germain end) has a large food section, but again I haven't actually looked for soy milk in there. I think French supermarkets generally often have soy products though as quite a lot of French people are lactose-intolerant.
ETA there is a Maoz falafel place in the Rue de la Harpe (I think) but perhaps you get enough falafels if you live in Israel! Also a veggie restaurant, le Grenier de Notre Dame, not far away - to me the food there is slightly boring but it's quite a nice place (make sure they know you're vegan when you order as they are slighly inclined to squirt mayonnaise etc over everything, including the dishes marked vegan, if you don't).
There are other threads about Paris here if you search.
go to Maubert Mutualité metro (line 10), exit place Maubert. on certain days there is a market.
near the market there is health food store with everything you would be looking for. The street is Saint Germain, I believe.
this health food store is located in the 5th arrondissement, it`s very close to Notre Dame cathedral, so you could take a peak at the great Gothic Mama, and ask for place maubert and get directions
hope this helps.
It`s a lovely neighborhood in Paris in anycase
this may be the link, or another one
http://www.biosaintgermain.com/
there is a map on the site
also note that the market at place maubert has a vendor that sells organic vegetables, 'Agriculture Biologique'
search also on google "Magasin d'Aliments Naturels"
hope this helps
Jomo
thank you all very much!
"I think, therefore I'm vegan"
Hello everyone.
Here is a vegan web site about Paris and France. It's all in french, but the webmaster can speak french.
http://veganfrance.com/
If you need other information about french vegans or animal rights activists you can ask me too.
thanks
Great, thank you! Am off to Paris soon so will have a good look.
I've just been to La Victoire Suprême du Coeur as well. I agree it has a very nice atmosphere. We found there was far too much food though - we just had soup and a main course and my mother and cousin could hardly manage any of their main course after polishing off their soup.
I think I'd go for two starters another time. It only cost about 70 euros for the three of us so quite reasonable but seems a shame to waste stuff.
Has anybody been to Paris fairly recently? Which restaurants, bistros did you go to ? would you receommend them?
Any recommendations would be great please.
Thanks
Hi, I was there at Christmas but didn't manage to get into any veg restaurants (I did try a couple but the were both shut so I ended up in Lebanese places). I think my favourite from the time before was still Le Potager du Marais and maybe Guen Mai for lunch (that one is more macrobiotic, and serves fish unfortunately) but I haven't been to all of them.
There are some more places mentioned here:
http://www.veganforum.com/forums/showthread.php
And Happycow is worth a look as well, not least because I've reviewed most of the places I've been to on it However I would strongly recommend telephoning places before you go because those listings get out of date quickly as places close down.
Bonjour, I was in Paris two years ago and went to this place.
http://www.happycow.net/reviews.php?id=864
It was very good and in a very picturesque part of town close to the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur and the Moulin Rouge.
Its a small place a few minutes walk from Abesses metro station.
Boom, boom
Have just been to Paris and managed another trip to La Victoire Supreme du Coeur. This time I skipped the soup and was able to eat both a risotto and a delicious dessert (individual chocolate tart with chocolate icecream, which may sound like too much chocolate but wasn't )
We didn't go to the Potager du Marais because if I understood their answering machine message correctly it's now only open Thursday to Monday or something like that - if you are planning to go I would check first. We had macrobiotic meals in the 5 Saveurs d'Anada and in the Guen Mai, both of which were fine (again).
I might go to Paris next weekend, yay! Haven't been for about 8 years...
Well, it's still there, just with limited opening times - but as I say I would check because it may just have been a temporary thing, or I may have got hold of the wrong end of the stick.
I never went to La Truffe, what was that? I used to quite like Piccolo Teatro as featured on the G Ramsay programme - however I never went there when it was under the management featured in the programme, thank goodness.
La Truffe was the most amazing restaurant I had ever been to at the time, not just the best in Paris! They specialised in mushroom dishes. Sooo tasty!
I realise Potager du Marais is still there which is good of course, but I was just feeling sad that the next time we're in Paris it's bound to be a day or two when it is closed! (We ate there almost every day last time we were there.)

I'm sorry I missed La Truffe. Perhaps the Potager will have longer hours over the summer or something.
I think I like La Victoire Supreme du whatsit as much, though, based on that last meal. They sell wine which I think used not to be the case?

I will not eat anything that walks, swims, flies, runs, skips, hops or crawls.
I'm just in Paris - having a fantastic time. I have been going to a lovely little restaurant - La Grenouille in Rue Bucherie (Ar 4) - just near Notre Dame. Highly recommended - several lovely vegan dishes on offer and very prompt friendly service!
Sorry - I note above that everyone else has already been there - except I've spelt it wrong! - of course as you all note above its Le Grenier!
It should be called La Grenouille de Notre Dame - that would be much better Glad you're having a fun time.
Hello everybody
I'm looking for a cheaper sleeping place in Paris ( 8th - 13rd September).
I'm a vegan chef and I work in London but I'll be in Paris to see new veg restaurants. (I'm not rich yet...ehehehe, and so I need a really cheaper place to sleep).
Write me here:

Thanx guys !
Marco
We were in Paris last weekend and tried some new (to us) places.
1) Le Puits de Legumes, rue Cardinal Lemoine, at the east end of the Boulevard St Germain near the Institut du Monde Arabe. Macrobiotic-leaning place (serves fish) though they also had un-macrobiotic seeming things like couscous with vegetarian (not vegan, though they would have left them off for me) sausages. Charming service, quite busy on Friday lunchtime. I had a macrobiotic plate (OK, but perhaps not as carefully flavoured as some I've had).
2) Les Saveur VegetHalles (geddit?) rue des Bourdonnais, near Samaritaine. On Saturday this one seemed, interestingly, to be full of French people having lunch. I had a very good, fresh-tasting salad with fine sesame-studded tofu cubes. OH had a mushroom roast which was tasty though a bit uninspiring in texture I thought. They tried to short-change us by 5 euros but it could have been a genuine accident. On the plus side it is completely vegetarian and the majority of the food seems to be vegan.
3) Chennai Bhavan, rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, right by the Gare du Nord. We had a quick dhosa here before catching the train home. The dhosas are not the most exciting I've had and not that many are vegan (mine was a paper dhosa, which was hollow, but the chutneys and sambar that came with it were flavoursome). It was v cheap though and the people who run it it are very nice and speak good English. There is another Indian one a couple of doors down but it is omnivorous, whereas Chennai Bhavan is completely vegetarian.
In addition we went to the ever-reliable Le Grenier de Notre Dame, rue de la Bucherie, just by St Julien Les Pauvres and opposite Notre Dame. The exciting news there was that after 32 years (I think they said) in business they have recently opened a second branch, very close by on the Ile St Louis. (This development partly makes up for La Victoire Supreme du Coeur having become omnivorous and apparently started serving foie gras )
Thanks for the info and reviews harpy. I read that elsewhere about La Victoire Supreme du Coeur - what a shame, obviously no heart at all.

Marrers, we didn't get as far as the Potager du Marais but I read some recent reviews that suggested they might have reverted to normal opening hours (or at least didn't mention limited ones) which would be good. Win some, lose some, eh?
i'm off to Paris in April so I'm already doing my homework! I'd be interested in hearing from anyone else who has been recently. I'm staying with a French friend who has recently turned vegetarian and she is quite worried about what we will eat so this thread had reassured me we will not be living off bread and fruit.
merci beaucoup
There's a great little restaurant with delicious vegan food in Paris, it's called "Rouleau de printemps" (42 rue de Tourtille, 75020 Paris, metro Belleville). It doesn't look like much from outside but the food is really good and it's not expensive at all.
