Vegan Washington DC

Hey all,

I've been in DC for upwards of a year, but only vegan for two months, so it feels like I'm getting to know the area again, kind of. Are there any DC vegans out there? If so, what are your favorite restaurants/haunts?

I'll be in Frisco, Colorado next week, and would love to meet up with any vegan there who uses this website. My daughter tells me there's a great grocery store there with heaps of vegan foods, so there must surely be vegan customers? I notice that you are from Austrailia.

Washington DC and Colorado are about half a hemisphere/continent apart from each other

I've never used it, but vegdining.com is supposed to help you find something to eat anyplace in the world.

i was on a conference in DC this past weekend, and i was surprised at how vegan-friendly it was. in most other cities, you have to plan in advance where to eat, but in DC you can just start walking, and you'll easily find vegan friendly places to eat.

and what i found particularly exciting was the fact that there's such a variety of cuisines...from all over the world. there were ghanian, moroccan, west african, and a whole bunch of ethiopian restaurants, as well as the more frequently encountered italian, indian, mexican, thai, japanese, and chinese restaurants.

there was even an all vegan bakery, but i was not very impressed with it...

for those planning on visiting DC, i found this guide useful (though as i mentioned earlier, you don't really need to plan ahead where to eat)

I made my DC trip this weekend, and decided to make a post about some vegan-friendly places.

Saturday morning we had brunch at Asylum. It was a pretty cool place. It had a bit of a gothic atmosphere, and they serve alcoholic drinks with breakfast (and it's a bar at night. THere is a separate vegan brunch menu. I had a tostada with tofu scramble, black beans, homefries, and cantaloupe. Oh, and an irish coffee (coffee with whiskey). My fiance had a tostada with lots of veggies, guac, and veg. sour cream. It was all very good.

Saturday night we ate at Busboys and Poets. Again, the place was not entirely vegetarian, but they did have vegan calzones, pizza, veggie burgers, and a few other clearly marked vegan entrees. We had calzones with marinera, soy mozzarella, soy pepperoni, and veggies. We also had brushetta for an appetizer. The calzones were good, but I have had much better. The bread was very good for the brushetta, but they didn't give nearly enough toppings. All in all I thought the place was very overpriced, but it did have an awesome atmosphere. Its a restaurant, bar, and bookstore all in one. Drinks were superpricey as well.

Sunday we hit up a tiny place called Amsterdam's falafel. They basically just serve falafel and fries, and it was delicious. They had tons of toppings for the falafel, including chick pea salad, baba ghanoush, lemony parsley, marinated cucumbers, and roasted eggplant. It was pretty cheap also.

Finally, we went to the entirely vegan Sticky Fingers Bakery. I'm not sure if this is the place that Dancing Willow was referring too, but I thought it was great. All three of us got cupcakes, and we got an oatmeal pie to go. My friend also got some temptation softserve vegan icecream which was tasty as well. It's a must go for me the next time I'm in DC.

I've been to Sticky Fingers and Bus Boys and Poets. Can't do cake, so I just had a sandwich at the bakery. And I had a pizza with slippery cheese and vegan blueberry cheesecake at Bus Boys... the cheesecake was so good. Tasted just like dairy cheesecake, without the lactose. 8)

I've heard Java Green is good. Been meanin' to go there... It's "99% vegan."

Heh. That's probably what it sounded like. My fiancee, me, and a fried of mine actually went there to see a band we like (Mates of State) at the 9:30 club. It's about a 4 hour drive for me so it wasn't too bad. We also got to see the cherry blossoms (didn't go see the parade, but the flowers were pretty) and walk around down town. I hadn't been since I was in 8th grade.
