There is a place behind the castle mall, near that huge model car/plane shop, if you walk down the hill abit as if you were heading towards the train station. On your right there will be a vegan Chinese restraunt [you will be able to smell it ], its take away buffet.

You pay a set price, get as much as you like and they put it in a container. They also sell various chinese vegan food.

I'm going to Uni there in September so if you find any other places out let me know!

There is a place opposite the church at the marketplace called Rainbow wholefoods that now do fresh vegan sandwiches, and a delicious spicy pizza bread available on wednesdays or fridays (if I haven't gotten there and eaten them first )

That's if you're after a light snack, anyways.

xaaronx, you'll be pleased to know that Norwich is very vegan-friendly. Places i recommend visiting:

Rainbow - this is a great little organic supermarket/healthfood store.. its down an alleyway down the side of the Guild Hall (that checkered building next the market) great selection of tofu, vegan wines/beers, seeds and dried fruit.

Pulse cafe - this is next to Rainbow and (i presume) run by the same people.. the menu is rather good, all veggie with about 50% vegan (also labels the things that can be made vegan). I didnt eat there, as the menu was a bit 'fussy' for my boyfriend, but the prices looked good and id definately go there some other time.

The Green House Trust - a very interesting place, a charitable trust, situated just beyond the police station (up on the left side of city hall). i got some £1 plamil bars, and The Animal Free Shopper in their small but interesting shop, and ate in the cafe. the menu was smaller than Pulse (soup of the day, savoury bakes, filled rolls, moussaka) and £5 seemed alot for a savoury roll and salad, but the roll was packed full of a gorgeous nutty filing, and the salad was probably the best salad ive ever had in norwich - 2/3 plate ful of waldof salad, bean salad, pasta salad, beetroot, carrot, spinach and rocket... with the soup they give a choice of wholemeal, rye, or rice crackers which i thought was also impressive... also a selection of ethical living magzines to read.

I noticed a little sandwich bar up pottergate, that advertised sandwich rolls £2.50 - meat, fish, veggie and vegan choices - i didnt get the chance to check it out though.

On the market there is a stall (i think its 'Naturally' in the list above) that specialises in natural foods and spices - they had all the spices and herbs id ever heard of, plus more, in jars that you can buy by weight.. as well as a huge selection of spreads, grains, pulses and fruit for very good prices. Also on the market make sure you stock up on locally grown seasonal fruit and veg (including the norfolk speciality, Samphire in July).

yay this is great, am going to be living in Norofolk for the next 6 months and Norwich is nearby, I dont think Norfolk is amazing for vegans, at least not Downham Market where I'm going, as I think its pretty small, so will definitely be checking out Norwich.

i hadnt finished.. got interrupted. was also going to add some places to buy toiletries:

The soap stall on the market (on the right hand side) does gorgeous Lush-like soaps for a much lower price.. i spoke to the woman on the stall who said all the soaps were handmade by her husband, and vegan, and the naturals range contained a large proportion of fresh fruit. nice!

L'Occitane en province - New shop opened between Virgin and Past Times (where Thorntons used to be). its a chain store and its expensive, but their products are luxurious and smell amazing. Look out for honey and milk on the ingredients list, but otherwise everything else is animal-free.

Head in the Clouds/Feet on the Groud - just a quick mention as they stock fair-traded hemp clothing and leather-free cheap shoes.

The cafe in the Forum has no vegan food, but they will give Soya milk with tea/coffee if you ask.. useful if your going for coffee with mates and dont want to take them somewhere obscure.

Some other recommendations - The pottergate fish bar does the best chips in Norwich (fried in vegetable oil), and in.di.go tattoo/piercing studio is on lower goat lane - opposite fat face!

    Question Re: Vegan Norwich!

I went to uni in Norwich and lived there for many years after that. That was 15 years ago now. There was the most fantastic veggie cafe over the Rainbow health food shop. It had a really good selection of vegan food and was always packed. The people in there were not all v*gan, it was just a case of the food being really great. I heard that it closed down and couldn't understand why, it must have been a viable business making a good profit. I'm sure many people were very disappointed when it closed. On my occasional visits to Norwich I always looked forward to going in for coffee/lunch. Does anyone from Norwich know why it closed down? Someone mentioned Pulse next to it but it sounded quite a bit different from the old Rainbow cafe I remember.

Treehouse cafe, which used to be above Rainbow before it moved, has now closed down unfortunately. It's a big loss to the city, as their vegan desserts were to die for.

The Pulse cafe doesn't have many vegan desserts, otherwise I'd go there more. Although the food is nice, it isn't as "wholesome" if that makes sense?!?

Vegeland is the Chinese buffet place and is brilliant. They now do vegan burgers and hot dogs too. Their mini spring rolls are my favourites - yum!

Vegeland is at the top of Rose Lane - if you walk from the train station towards the castle, staying left instead of walking up Prince of Wales Road. About 5 mins walk.

Just went to Vegeland today, YUM!

I had a little bit of everything, and a hot dog. Needless to say I was stuffed afterwards lol.

The lady in there was really nice, and telling me how it is very difficult to make any profit with the business, and that she does it only to provide for other vegans.

Oh I almost forgot. There is a pub about 2 miles or so out of Norwich at Plumstead called the Brick Kilns.

It has vegan options on the menu and the ones that I have tried were very nice. They are always busy though and I had to book 4 weeks in advance for a meal there.

Not entirely vegan I know, but nice to have an extra option if you want to go somewhere with omnis .

Good luck with your move and settling in, xaaronx.

For all you Norwich people, I've just published a book Vegetarian East of England, where Norwich is the absolute hotspot, the new Brighton (cute shopping streets and loads of veggie cafes).
    http://www.vegetarianguides.co.uk/pr...tengland.shtml
Take a look at page one of the Look Inside and you'll find a list of all the veggie cafes there and the two veggie B&B's, plus surrounding counties.
Feedback from people in the region very welcome.

i work a lot in norwich and i recomend vegeland very good, you can sit in the area looking up at the castle once you have made your selection.
when they first started they did a bufet for my wifes birthday celebration do (21st of course). another place to try is finneys juice bar in uppergoat lane near market behind the flint building. he ofton has a curry that is vegan, he also offers soya milk and exelent well priced coffee. i beleive he also offers soya shakes although i could be wrong. thinking about that i might try next time i pass.
i still mourn the loss of the tree house.

The Brick Kilns in Little Plumstead. Make sure you book! Not far from Wroxham. So maybe not really close, but worth it.

Hey, thanks for those suggestions. According to Google Maps though, it'll take at least an hour to drive to either one of them!! A bit further than I want to drive for a meal out at night, really. Even though both menus look delicious (especially Pulse).

A bit of internet searching has revealed a pub in Sheringham called The Lobster who have a few vegan options on their menu - has anyone been there??

There is also an animal sanctuary in West Runton that I found, who have a cafe serving vegan options (would only be a lunch thing though I think).

Apart from those, vegan friendly places outside of Norwich seem to be non existent! :/ Please someone correct me if I'm wrong!

We might have to be making that hour drive...

Yep, that would be the Hillside Animal Sanctuary - where you can get Tofutti Rock and Roll cones from the snack shop!!

It's lovely there - they do good by their animals.

Not heard of or been to the Lobster... Looks like it is certainly worth a try, especially as they mark the menu 'vegan' and mention it again at the bottom. Makes a change when a place knows the difference. Unfortunately, as far as I am aware, there aren't massive amounts of vegan places here in Norfolk. The only other place I would recommend would be in Suffolk - so no good for you!

    Default Re: Vegan Norwich!

I've returned from my trip to Norfolk!

Firstly, I have to say how much I loved Hillside in West Runton. The place was fantastic, lots of healthy happy looking animals, plus plenty of information about where they had been rescued from (in many instances, the meat and dairy industries) and the terrible conditions on many farms. There was an animal rights message throughout the place, and I loved the consistency of it - so many animal sanctuaries or wildlife reserves have cafes serving meat and dairy, but Hillside's cafe is 100% vegan. There's a large choice of sandwiches, plus hot meal options (on the day we went, it was veggie curry or chilli with brown rice). There's also vegan ice cream, cakes, biscuits, and so on. You won't go hungry there!

We went to a few other wildlife type places including Titchwell Marsh, Cley Marshes and Pensthorpe (where BBC Springwatch is filmed). We took our own food, but noticed that the cafes in each place had one vegan option (usually jacket potato with veg chilli or beans; Cley had a houmous and roast veg sandwich on the menu). Not very imaginitive really but would do in a pinch! Would be best to ring up in advance and check, regardless.

We also went to The Lobster pub in Sheringham one night for dinner - there is a dedicated vegetarian menu with about six or seven options, all of which can be made vegan. Some of them are not very imaginitive but some are okay (you can see the menu on their website). I had five bean chilli with a jacket potato and salad which was very tasty, but probably not worth the £12 they charged for it (also, the portion wasn't as large as I expected from a pub meal). I had a sorbet selection for dessert, which was again very tasty but cost me £6!

All of the veggie dishes were £12 which I thought was rather steep given a) the cheapness of veggie ingredients and b) the fact that many omni dishes were only about £10. I enjoyed the meal - and the atmosphere of the pub which is very old school and cosy - but felt a bit ripped off to be honest.

On the way out, we noticed that The Lobster also has a fine dining restaurant attached to it, called The Stables. I hadn't realised, but this is a completely separate place with a separate menu - it also has a vegan menu, and the sample dishes looked fantastic. When I come back to Norfolk for another holiday I'll definitely go to The Stables and try the food there, rather than go to the pub again.

EDIT: You can't see the vegan options at The Stables on their website, but from memory there was puy and chickpea loaf among the mains, and several desserts including poached pears with lavender vegan ice cream. Best to ring up and check, probably!

    That's my report, anyway!

Norfolk is a lovely place, we'll definitely be back for more at some point (and will check out Norwich next time).

Thanks for mentioning that, paul46. Yes, it appears to be permanent, as they have printed up new flyers. I picked up one when I was in there the other day, and the young guy also mentioned the Saturday opening to me. I'm so pleased, as we're moving in to the city in a couple of weeks, so I can just walk there on a Saturday for my fix!!!

I went to the Brick Kilns in Little Plumstead at the weekend while in Norfolk. I thought the food was great. I had the nut goulash with roast potatoes and veg. Then to my surprise I realised there were vegan desserts. I had hot date and walnut cake with vegan ice cream. Tasted like Xmas pudding yum. Will definitely be going back here again.

Hi everyone, we have just started a new vegan food business in Norwich - www.coopersveganfoods.co.uk. We have a selection of cakes but also savoury items. We currently have a stall at Creake Abbey Studios farmers market, North Creake Norfolk every first Saturday of the month. We are also attending the Brighton Vegfest next month. If anyone would like us to attend an event or provide any food please let us know.
In November we attended Hillside Animal sanctuarys Christmas fayre and sold items both on a stall and in their cafe with all proceeds going to the sanctuary.

Thank you! At the moment we have secured a stall at the castle mall Norwich on Good friday 22nd April for a trial, hopefully this could lead to something more permanent along with our stall at Creake Abbey Studios farmers market.
Please feel free to come and chat if you spot us outside Boots near Peacocks in the mall!

We spoke to so many vegans at Hillside, it was great! I know plenty of vegetarians but not vegans so hopefully we will meet a few more!

Its a fine city! Loving Hut are now serving vegan crispy chilli beef (tofu) and its sooo good! Their food just keeps on getting better and I highly recommend a visit. I also went to The Greenhouse Trust the other Saturday and had a lovely mushroom and barley soup, hummus with 5 different salads and beetroot & chocolate cake for dessert. Beat that Brighton lol!!!
