    Default Decorating cupcakes

It's my husband's birthday next week and he's asked me to make some vegan cupcakes for him to take into the office. Since he isn't actually vegan I'm really touched that he's asked and as he works in an office full of die-hard omnis I want to make them look really special.

I've ordered some fancy cases on the web but none of the edible decorations gave the ingredients so I couldn't figure out what was ok Can anyone recommend any sprinkles etc I can get in UK supermarkets that are vegan?

    Thanks.

I don't know off the top of my head which decorations are vegan apart from boxes of organic sprinkles which are marked on the box and I've only seen those in health food shops, not supermarkets.

Alternatives would be chocolate chips (supercook dark chocolate ones are vegan ingredient's wise though they have been manufactured on the same line as the milk ones so have a "may contain traces.." warning), or you can make your own fancy decorations by melting chocolate and swirling it onto foil, allowing it to set in the freezer and then peeling it off. Hearts and stars look particularly effective

Cherries and anjelica or those jelly orange and lemon slices are all classics - you'd have to check the ingredients of all of those depending on brand.

Chopped nuts, fresh fruit, sherbert pips. Heh, I'm having a head rush thinking of all the sweet things that could go on top of a cake

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'd thought about cherries but not with coconut - yummy! I presume dark chocolate coated coffee beans would be ok too?

Now I'm confused - I googled for vegan decorations and read that only Hundreds and Thousands in the Supercook range are ok - can't remember where I read it though

Possibly, but watch out for shellac - I think it's been on most of the ones I've seen

I checked in Sainsbury's on the Supercook range. The hundreds and thousands have beeswax as a coating- but sugar strands seem OK. They didn't have any of the others for me to check on I suggest having a quick scan of the ingredients before you buy to double check.

On the subject of decorating- I love grated green and blacks on mine! Especially the orange one!

I knew I'd seen chocolate covered coffee beans somewhere that seemed okay and I remember now - it was in a fairtrade shop. I can't remember the brand but it was something like Traidcraft, and they were in a linen-type drawstring bag. Unfortunately I think they were a christmassy gift type product, not sure if there would be any in Oxfam or somewhere like that at the moment.

They're not complicated, they just require some patience!

That looks lovely Aradia - but too late for the current batch. I'll post a pic when I figure out how to.
