I think I might make a raw smoothie for breakfast. I have tons of frozen strawberries and I have romaine lettuce too.
Let me know what it tastes like if you decide to try it.

Hmm, I wouldn't think that celery, apple and ginger blend well. I would have blended the narnas w/ water and then juiced the cel, app & ging. and added that to the blended narna water. Wouldn't have been too thick that way.
I'll try something like that once I obtain a juicer. *grins*

Thanks for the advice!

Me too! I have some ginger and need to use it, but since I absolutely hate the taste, I can't seem to find a way to use it. But I don't want to waste it!

both of these sound really good! I've got to find the time to make another one sometime soon. maybe thursday for some pre-exam stress-relieving juicing. (my juicer is really hardcore and makes like heavy machine noises)

Got the organic romaine yesterday from Sainsburys after looking in the wrong section the last 2 times I went there I was looking in the prepared lettuce section for some reason thinking it would look like spinach and then there is it looking for all the world like cos lettuce!

I put 4 huge leaves in this mornings smoothie and it tastes very - - - leafy!

So today i had

Romaine
narna
pear
1 tsp hemp oil
orange
H2o
Maple syrup to try to disguise the leafyness a bit!

It is pale pea green, sweet and v leafy mmmmmmmmm.

My daughter announced that you can't absorb the iron from spinach unless it is cooked. Sounds like one of those urban myths to me so I will have to do some poking around on the net to find out! Unless anyone here knows already and can let me know?

Thumbs up Re: Green Smoothies & Juices

http://www.vrg.org/journal/vj98jul/987hot.htm

Similarly, 1/2 cup of raw, chopped spinach contains 28 milligrams of calcium, while cup of boiled spinach contains a whopping 122 milligrams of calcium. (Remember: the calcium in spinach is largely not available to the body because of the exceptionally high oxalate content of spinach, which binds the calcium and prevents absorption.)

http://www.deliciousorganics.com/rec...pinachsnap.htm
Nutritionally: Spinach has only 13 calories per serving and packs a punch for Vitamin A as well as folic Acid (especially important for pregnant women) and is rich in carotenoids and antioxidants. It is also rich in chlorophyll. Debate exists whether it is more beneficial to cook spinach or eat it raw (juice it). Spinach contains oxalic acid. While this cleans our intestinal tract, oxalic acid binds with calcium and diminishes the absorption of calcium in our bodies. Cooking turns the oxalic acid into crystals that could damage kidneys and limit the absorption of iron but cooking also breaks down cell walls and allow us to absorb more nutrients. The answer? Eat spinach in moderation, and eat it raw as well as cooked.

These contain oxalates, which among other effects inhibit calcium absorption. Again, they are not hazardous unless large quantities are eaten. They don't accumulate in the body, and are not destroyed by heat.

Looks like she was right 4 times the iron in cooked compared with raw – scroll down to the chart

I noticed the spinach in both those examples was measured by volume not weight. As spinach shrinks down a lot when you cook it, could the reason a cup of cooked spinach contains four times as much iron as a cup of raw spinach be there's four times as much spinach in the cup?

Edit:

It looks like this is saying cooking spinach turns the oxalic acid into crystals which could actually limit the absorption of iron.

that's an interesting point enchantress.

also i guess its best for the spinach to be just wilted or cooked right down? i thought wilted would be better but if cooked right down you could prob squeeze even more in

I agree w/ juicing ginger. It's nice w/ carrots or green apples plus celery.

Mango season seems to have died off so I back to smoothies of spinach, narnas and a kiwi fruit instead.

well, at first it seemed that i had put a bit too much parsley. it was definitely the stronger flavor. thats when i decided to add more pineapple and mango. after that...its really tasty. although now as i am sitting here drinking it, i may have needed to blend it up just a bit longer..getting a few little stringies.

Roxy, you should definitely try one! they are not as scary as you would think. i would suggest starting with more fruit than greens and something like spinach or romaine which is fairly mild in my opinion. oh, and use a little ice if you can..i find that they are tastier when they are colder.
if you decide to go for it...let us know how you like them!

mesclun greens are like a spring mix..usually it has baby greens- spinach, radicchio, endive, frissee, swiss chard, mache...those are the most common. its really great even just to have a salad with. and they are very tender and easy to blend.
can i ask you..what do you use to make your smoothies in? i have just started with making smoothies and i am already becoming addicted. i have been just using the magic bullet which does a decent job. but as you can even see in the pic..it does still leave little tiny bits. i have seen so much about the vitamix, but unfortunately i just can't afford that. i have been looking all over, reading reviews..and i just keep going back and forth. any suggestions?

i'm not very hi-tech, my smoothies tend to be a bit grainy because of that. i'm just using a hand blender for now till i'm a bit more flush ££ wise!

I got a Vitamix!!!

I just decided to suck it up and order it! I will be paying for it for a while, but this thing is worth it! my smoothies are soooo great! I highly recommend one to anyone who is a regular smoothie drinker! tonight i am going to attempt to make homemade almond butter..and maybe even some soy cream if i am feeling a little nutty!
