Question Do you live in a vegan "grey zone?"

I live in an area that I would describe as a vegan "grey zone." Here's my thinking...an hour north of me is San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley (all very vegan-friendly.) About an hour south of me is Santa Cruz (a large proportion of residents are living so-called alternative lifestyles, including veganism.)
I'm right in the middle which is great because I can travel just a short distance and have many options in food, clothing, etc. But it's also a pain because I have to travel a distance to get those options. Know what I mean?

Do you live in the center of vegan activity, a "grey zone," or a place far from vegan or vegan-accepting?

B-right-on by the sea, UK. Probably more hippy b@stard vegans per capita than anywhere on the planet and plenty of places to shop, eat, hang.
    I love it.

Far away from a vegan-friendly place! I only one or two vegetarian restaurants (not fully vegan) and the supermarket does stock some vegan essentials. But that's it. No vegan groups or anything.

I looked up the local vegan meet-up (because of the other thread) there are now more then 260 members, and that does not include other groups like the Boston vegetarian society.

I got confused for a minute there. You're talking about Cambridge, MA, right? Cambridge UK is a bit like an anti-Brighton in my limited experience, though puffin may disagree..

Well... I was talking about the little city across the river from Boston MA.

    :Edit:
I'm feeling quite lucky to have 7 fully vegan restaurants, 2 fully vegan pizza places, and countless vegetarian places all within a 10 mile radius.

    Nice.
Any good recording studios? My mate Laura did some work here http://www.m-works.com/studios-yes6.html
    but it's a mastering facility.

I'm always very interested in going to work in places with TWO fully vegan pizza outlets. VERY.
I shall have to concoct a project that takes me there, hmm..

Just this year I've started to play the bass. I know the music scene here is really going, and quite diverse, but I really don't know much in the way of recording studios... sorry.

I live in a vegan black zone. I'd have to travel several miles to find someone who knows the correct definition of a vegan.

We live in Seaford, a small seaside town around 20 miles from Brighton - it isn't really a grey zone at all. We can buy all the basic vegan products in the town including Beauty without Cruelty makeup, hair dye, food, face creams and shampoos etc but for anything really special we have to catch the bus to Brighton.
If we were stranded in Seaford forever we could easily buy everything we need here which is pretty good for what is basically a large village.
In the UK 20 miles is a bit of a hardship, we are not used to driving 100's of miles to get anywhere like you Americans

110 mile round trip to my 'local' health food shop, no veggie/vegan places to eat in the entire area, as far as i can see, 100 mile round trip the nearest vegan group meetings................

Fortunately these days i am simplifying my needs and wants so i can manage with the basics, and just get the treat items when i can.

I just moved to South Amboy, NJ. So far, it seems like a black hole for vegans. The best bet is the Wegman's 15 minutes away and the nearby town of Iselin, which has a huge Indian population. South Amboy itself seems to be composed only of bars serving cheap beer, pizza, and wings. Maybe this will inspire me to cook more--or hop the train to NYC.

I used to live in Asbury Park. There was a vegetarian/mostly vegan soup and sandwich place two blocks from me, veg friendly Thai and Japanese resturants less than 5 minutes away, and Kaya's Kitchen an awesome vegan resturant about 15 minutes drive. It wasn't a vegan paradise, but it was certainly livable, with the ocean and a great place for wine and mojitos contributing to the quality of that life.

I guess I'd be in a dark gray area. Most people here don't know the definition of vegan either until I tell them, then most of them seem to think I'm nuts or something. My local grocery does have some vegan friendly items and has started carrying some organic produce as well. But the vegan friendliest city nearby is about 45 minutes away and no public transportation in my dinky town either.

at the moment Im in a totally vegan unfriendly place, in Norofolk - seriously I may well be the only vegan in the place, and im a bit sick of justifying my veganism, and I've only been here a week! Cambridge is 30-40 mins on the train, and Norwich is an hour on the train too, but it does mean changing trains twice.

I think you are correct. The Cowley Club is totally vegan and looking to be more inclusive I hear..
The Unemployed Centre Café was vegan apart from a choice of milk for teas until fairly recently. I don't know about it now.

if you can describe living in the middle of the caribbean as living in a grey zone (wich i consider it, rather black for vegans), yes i do. i hate it. i have to travel long distances, and i mean long as going to the us or europe to find something vegan friendly

    I reside in Northeastern PA.

There is a vegan-friendly restaurant about an hour away. There is a health food store that is very vegan friendly too.

That's it. It sucks here for vegans.

I'm confused Tigerlily - where abouts do you live exactly? Toronto has plenty going on veg-wise, including the very well established Toronto Vegetarian Association and its subgroups, like Veggies of Halton and Peel, Vegetarians in their Twenties, Queer Veggie Social Group, VDot, etc.

St. Louis is very dark gray. I would say black, but its not as bad as the small town I go to school in (which has pretty much nothing).
In St. Louis (which I live about a half hour from) has like 3 vegetarian restaurants (including a coffee shop that has some food, but not a lot), but no completely vegan ones. The one vegan place "temporarily closed" like 4 months ago, and I have a bad feeling they are not coming back!
The suburb of St. Louis I live in is even worse. The best eating out options are Qdoba (a burrito place with veg. options-very good imo), Panera Bread, and Subway.

i live in a vegan "no fly zone". las vegas is not known for its social consciousness. you wouldn't believe how many times people out here ask me what a vegan is. even the ones who have heard the word give me cookies with dairy, eggs & milk chocolate chips, and order me coffee with cream or pick up sushi (with fish) for me..... because they just don't get it. even the very expensive restaurants in the casinos think that dairy and eggs are ok when i tell them i want nothing that isn't a plant. i've become a phenomenal cook because of it though. there is one raw food restaurant with two locations and that is the only specifically vegetarian eatery in all of las vegas and its suburbs.

ditto -- but not 45 minutes, more like a few hours...

I live in three cities in central pennsylvania, which is a dairy/ beef state. I'm the only vegan I know here.. a few vegetarians around... but most people need some kind of description of vegansim before they "get" it. That's okay, I like being special!

Of the three, one is near Philadelphia (an hour outside) and Philly is decent with vegetarian restaurants, health food shops, etc.

The second city, York has no vegetarian/ vegan restaurants and has one "health food" shop about 1/2 hour away.

The third city, State College, has one vegan-friendly restaurant (ie they can make it vegan if you ask), no health food shops, no veg restaurants, most people don't know what (who, why, how) veganism is... its most similar to eclectic-one's description.

I don't really buy too many health food/ super food/ brand name products anyway. I stick to the whole food version as much as possible.

casino buffets are worse . i've given up going to them because the smell alone is so nauseating. Friends who visit know better to ask me to go with them.

But, on the other hand, we do have Chocolate Covered Boston Creme donuts from Ronald's.

I am SO tired of a plate of mushy boiled veggies and a plain pathetic tossed salad when I have to use casino food & beverage services because of work. HOW hard is it to read a damn vegan cookbook and come up with a better meal????

I have written complaint letters to the f&b manager at the Trop, Wynn, Caesars, Flamingo, Texas Station, Sunset Station, Harrah's and the Rio. All I got was a "so sorry you were unable to eat our stellar food offerings, but our bottom line would go down if we spent money on "exotic" food stuff like tofu, seitan or the like. Besides, ordering special food for 1 meal out of 100 is not cost effective"... and the NERVE to charge me the same price as the rest of the carnivores! yada yada yada

Great customer service attitude there folks..

sort of. my whole area is kinda bad, cuz i live in Ontario California, which according to 30 Days, is "a major factory farming area in southern california." in all truth, the only farm i would consider to be a "factory farm" is the calf replacement one they showed on the video. the rest are... niceish, i guess, as far as enslavement goes.

Ontario is directly between LA and San Bernardino. LA, about 40 minutes away, is great. i love to take the train there. while it is dangerous, especially the eastern side, its fun to check out local restaurants and stuff. we always take the train from upland to downtown LA, then take the subway to hollywood. hollywood is GREAT for vegans. there are at least 3 vegan restaurants. and then theres Venice Beach, which isn't too far from hollywood, which has a few veg-friendly restaurants, and Jingles, the guy who runs the Meat is Murder stand on the boardwalk.

sadly, however, there is san bernardino, which is a landmark of mistreaten pet animals. there are crap loads of strays, and the shelter kills off more animals then (i believe) any shelter elsewhere in California. in fact, Last Chance for Animals started off in San Bernardino, protesting the shelter.

oh, and theres Claremont, which is a college area, and it has a few vegan restaurants. i like to go hand out leaflets there because people are pretty calm and happy, and open to newer ideas.

Italy has great - if expensive - fresh fruit and veggies, but in terms of a "vegan culture" (vegan restaurants, vegan sensibilities in the wider population), it's pretty much the vegan equivalent of the Mariana Trench.

Still, things could be much worse, so I'm not really complaining. Just glad I know how to swim

The only place to eat vegan food where I live is...........in my kitchen and the only other vegan on the island is my 5 year old daughter!
They have recently started selling soya milk in one of the local shops but I normally make my own. There's no tofu, no soya cheese, no red lentils, no cous cous and no fresh veggies if the boats don't come from the mainland. Ho hum, such is island living

The island survives mainly on tourism and anyone who grows veggies here does so for their own consumption. We're in a rented place with no outside space so we can't grow our own yet On the plus side, husband has been working on the mainland for the past few weeks and bringing back great veggies which are cheaper than they are here.
I can get green lentils which I do use a lot of but no-one stocks red lentils or soya beans so I have to get them online.
We looked to move to the Shetland Isles but the weather's better here

I feel like I live in a vegan wasteland. There are stores where I can at least buy food to cook but as far as eating out the options are limited. The closest vegan eating out option is 1 hour away. After that the next closest are 3 hours.

I live in Hornchurch area of london and aside from chips, pizza hut and one option from a chinese takeaway a mile away there isn't much here so I have to travel the 15-20 miles into central for any real options

It wouldn't be a "grey" zone if I wasn't so damn fussy.

Right on my main boulevard there's a vegan Asian restaurant (but I don't like the service and it's always dirty). There's an Indian restaurant too, but the bread is too tempting and then I'll be bloated.

The supermarkets within a 10 minute drive have minimal organic produce. There's a health food store too, but only vitamins, no produce at all.

For me, an ideal place would have to carry so much organic produce you wouldn't know what to pick; macro vegan bento boxes; gourmet raw foods; vegan cupcakes .. you get the picture ...

So a place like that (Dean's Supermarket) is a 30-minute drive and I like to go there once a week

I have a Whole Foods close by, but I'm not really a fan of Whole Foods (at least in my area, they are different in other areas) ... in my area, Whole Foods represents rich snobbery. People actually go there wearing fur.

Whole Foods does represent that and at the one in Kensington they had egg yolk and whole egg as an ingredient in the salad and hot food bar thing on loads of the vegan labelled products, had to grab a member of staff and get her to take all the vegan labels off pretty much everything
