Default What did you get in your veggie box?

It's Friday, which means we've just had a new organic veggie box (or bag, in our case) delivered. I'm so excited I just have to tell people!

I know other people get a box delivered, so I thought it might be nice to have a thread where we can compare the contents and share recipes for any unusual seasonal things.

    We got:

    onions
    potatoes
    carrots
    a green pepper
    an aubergine (wahey!)
    runner beans and french beans
    a bag of mixed salad
    2 apples
    2 pears
    2 plums

We always seem to have onions, potato and carrots. Also this week:

    peppers
    courgettes
    aubergine
    pointy "spring" cabbage
    French beans (delicious, they were)
    tomatoes
Er...that's it for veg I think.

    Fruit:
    nectarines
    plums
    apples
    grapefruit
    grapes
    melon
    bananas

We get large bags and they are usually quite varied. Obviously not all the stuff is UK grown...

    Wow! That sounds good.

Yes, I was looking at the organic labels in the supermarket last week and was lamenting the lack of UK organic things. Most of the things in the veggie bag we get are local, but not all. We had Kiwis last week but luckily from Spain not all the way from New Zealand!

I think our one (Farmaround) has links with a couple of farmers in Spain and Sicily and gets stuff from them, presumably not air-freighted... I should read the newsletter more thoroughly and then I would know!

They are quite good, I think. They do organic groceries as well which you can have delivered at the same time. This week I ordered some, and they didn't arrive because of a systems problem, but when I pointed this out they brought them the next day which I was quite impressed by. (Hope the person was passing anyway and didn't make a special journey... )

I don't get a veggie box delivered, because I worry about the quality of things - I think I prefer to choose them myself.

Here, we are very lucky and have so much local produce at the moment!

    From Riverford:

    Fruit & Veg Box
    Pointed Cabbage
    Lettuce
    Courgettes
    Red peppers
    Fennel
    Cherry tomatoes
    Red chard
    Plums
    Grapefruit
    Apples

They do 7 different types of box and you can order extra items too.

the veggie box delivery service i used has just gone out of business, which is really annoying as they sold soya milk, pasta etc. and i was counting on them to deliver heavy things i can't carry

i guess i'll have to look for another one... any recommendations?

You could try this site to help you find one, Gorilla: http://www.vegboxschemes.co.uk/

I tried a scheme in my old town and was really disappointed by the quality. The one we've got now is fantastic though. I like not choosing the vegetables myself as I'd probably be boring and get the same ones every time, and would probably buy things out of season.

And unlike others they're a fully vegetarian co-operative who have a shop selling tonnes of vegan stuff. Some schemes I've looked at are run by organic meat producers. We found theese people randomly on the internet whilst trying to find the nearest coop supermarket

Not sure exactly what we got because my other half unpacked it and put quite a lot of it into that night's dinner...

It included a nice bunch of chard, some fennel and a butternut squash though. I must do something with the squash as I'm ashamed to say the last one ended up in the compost.
