Brian, that cake looks lovely. What's the topping part?
Thank you!
I've never made sushi- i always thought it was fishy! Miss Bettie it looks lovely. How did you make it?
x
Cedarblue's posting earlier this week inspired me to make some tofu and give it the lemon treatment (think I overdid the lemon a bit!)
here it is with Pad Thai.
Here you go! http://tippitappi.blogspot.com/2007/...n-kitchen.html
I just finished it off with raspberries rather than kiwi. But I think any fruit would do.
P.S. It's Bryan....
It's the chickpea cutlet recipe from Veganomicon: http://www.chow.com/recipes/11364 . And it is well yum.
A lot of people think that, but sushi is actually a rice dish. Sashimi is actually the dish of raw fish.
Sushi is lovely though and easy to make. For maki (the round ones seen on here) you just need to cook some sushi rice, add rice vinegar while it cools, lay out some nori sheets (dried seaweed) and cover with the cooled rice leaving one end uncovered to seal it, then on the rice place any ingredient you want to use (tofu, carrot, nasty avocado, nice daikon etc.) across the rice about two-thirds in from the rice-free end, then roll it up and cut it into slices.
Well someone who knows how to cook can probably give a better recipe than that, but you can get the ingredients from most big supermarkets and decent health stores.
Michael.
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find me...
Don't forget the shrimp, snails, crabs and barnicles!

thanks maikeru thats exactly how I made it. My nori said it was pure seaweed...but you never know I suppose...
I sliced carrots, asparagus, and marinated tofu. I also filled it with vegan cream cheese and used that to seal it...very nummy.

Or in the case with land based vegetation: small snakes, slugs, spiders, snails, tree frogs, insects, larval worms, and field mice :
That's only because some people are deadly allergic to even minute amounts.'May contain Crustaceans'. That's it with me and Seaweed now, personally
All sorts of small animals are killed in the mass production of food, it's unavoidable, to the best of my knowledge, even if all food was "hand picked". All plant life, both land based and sea based , is teeming with animal life. In my country, for example, our FDA (Food and Drug Administration, don't know what the equivalent in the UK is called ) allows up to 75 insect fragments per every 50 grams of wheat flour, before action is taken to fix the problem. Actual levels are usually a quarter of that, but you get the idea.
"An Ohio University fact sheet estimates that we eat from one to two pounds of insects each year, and without knowing it."
I will continue to eat both land based and sea based vegetation.
great LEAVE it to me to take the thread off track!!! sushi has officially been ruined for me!!
"i'm rejecting my reflection, cause i hate the way it judges me."
Interesting. I would have assumed that the mass producers would have farmed it in dedicated pools or tanks.
It does make you wonder about the corollary.
FSA - Food Standards Agency. I am not sure they have any rules about such things though, only that they are not considered contaminants. How do you even count such things though, surely if it they are so easy to measure they would be able to remove them?
Michael.
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find me...
I believe the inspection is by microscope. Removal of those 75 insect fragments per 50 grams would take hours just for that 50 grams. Large scale removal would be impossible. Also from a vegan perspective the insects that live in vegetation still would have died even if they are later removed.
Thanks for the FSA info.
hmm..i've just finished eating a load of sushi as i was reading this. does make for a slightly queasy feel reading ^^
i think the fishy taste of it confuses me into thinking it's fish..i dunno.

Nice, in fact fantastic food eaten over 2 nights at David Banns in Edinburgh:
Thai tofu fritters soooo yummy!
Main of harrissa roasted aubergine and aduki beans in a pepper:
Main of smoked udon noodles and homemade smoked tofu:
Pud warmed poached fruits in filo basket with caramel sauce and they put a scoop of the homemade choc vegan ice cream on for me to try:
I also ate at other places but forgot to take photos
Mahk i do know what you're saying...........probably if i picked up a bag of wheat flour and it said on it 'may contain insects and small rodent fragments' i would successfully be put off eating that, too.
alisont, v.posh looking nosh there!
OK cobweb. Fair enough.
I was thinking, if one were to discriminate for or against eating sea grown over terra firma grown plant foods would that be considered an act of... "terraism"
*faint, distant cricket sounds*
I'll get my coat.
don't forget your hat, too!
i think, like emmap said, it's the fishy tasting-ness of seaweed coupled with the thought of invisible crustaceans that does it for me, but seriously, if actually saw how many creatures were harmed during a cereal harvest i would probably have to eat only indoors-homegrown food and windfall local fruit. Living where i do that might be tricky so for now i'll adopt the blinkers-on position .
If you ever come to New York City, don't drink the water:
Just kidding everyone, I assume this is common all over the globe, not just NYC; nothing we can do. Drink up.
I know it seems gross but it is the truth.

Alisont: your so lucky- that dessert looks de-licious! Hope you had a lovely time in Edinborough. Was it a holiday/break?
x
Yes thanks it was a short city break has a good time and loved Edinburgh wonderful city!
Seaweed does not taste fishy though, it tastes of the sea. People just associate that test with fish because they are more familiar with sea animals than sea plant.
Personally I think fish tastes seaweedy! Probably.
Michael.
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find me...
Well put. I agree. Sea plants taste like the sea, not fish. Nori doesn't taste the way it does because of animals just like New York City drinking water (probably most water actually) doesn't taste like shrimp, even though crustaceans live in that too.
Or they might freeze, being paralyzed in fear. I supplied the pic by the way to show that with a sixteen row wide mouth coming at them, animals certainly in the center area have no where to flee. (and poor Mr. snail can't really run anyway) Even if they survive they'd return to discover their homes have been destroyed, their family is dead, and their entire eco-system which they depend on is missing; sort of like a natural disaster such as a tsunami to us.I do wonder however how using nets compares to using a combine harvester? I'd have thought that most small animals would run away at the sound.
Here's a video showing how quickly they move (this one is only 12 rows wide but I assume otherwise similar to the still pic I showed earlier):

The world we live in is not vegan.
The taste of anything in my mouth for 5 seconds does not equate to the beauty and complexity of life.
Alisont - those meals look so delicious! You lucky girl
Nice video, here's another :

nice one flib.
oh flib, that was hillarious. i'm one of those sad people old enough to remember the wurzels singing this 'live' on totp
hahahahahaha, i actually watched it through to the end - and now it'll be stuck in my mind for the rest of the day
...er, it's very off topic though (oo 'aaar, oo 'aaar)
omg i went to see the wurzels live when i was a kid! they were playing at some sort of country fayre in cornwall.
don't try and justify it up cobweb - you went to see them headline at a venue didn't you!!
hahaha. Chas and Dave played in the park across the road last year. I forgot about it...I wouldn't have minded a free knees-up! ah well. I think Happy Mondays are rumoured for this year.
My dinner last night - Tom Yum with Jasmine rice and sweet chilli marinated tofu roasted with masses of garlic (my breath is luverely today!)
This is one of my favourite suppers - it's quick to make and really hits the flavour buttons!
Recipe!!!

we made lemon bars from 'the joy of vegan baking' this afternoon. i wasn't convinced after the base looked hideous, and the mixture looked grey..but..they turned out like this (not anything like the picture in the book) but taste fab!
