    Talking Dreena Burton's books

I have Vive le Vegan and I also have Eat, Drink, & Be Vegan. Vive le Vegan has a great brownie recipe and I LOVE the cashew ginger tofu in ED&BV. I was disapointed with the Wild Chick Soup in ED&BV...not very flavorful.

If you have her books what have you made and liked/or disliked?

I have all three of Dreena's cookbooks and love them all...but I find that generally, soups aren't her strongest area. When I want an awesome soup I usually check out one of the Sarah Kramer books.

That said, I love everything else in the Burton books, especially in Vive Le Vegan, which has been my most used cookbook for a long time now. I just picked up Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan and so far have enjoyed everything I've made - including the Gimme Chimmis, the Gluten-Be-Gone Homestyle Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Sarah's Bad but Good Bars.

In all her books I find that the baked goods are always amazing, esp. because she uses much less sugar than other vegan cookbooks seem to. But in Vive Le Vegan I love love love the Sunflower Lentil Pie and the Sweet Curry Casserole best of all.

i tried the apple hemp muffins, they're really good. i didn't have hemp seed nuts, and couldn't find them in any local shop, so i had to do without them. i also didn't have enough maple syrup so i added some brown sugar.

A lot of her recipes call for weird stuff, like xanthan gum. I really don't see how that's necessary since I never seen any other vegan recipes calling for those weird ingredients. My mom likes to bake vegan when she knows I'll be around and wants me to send her the recipes, but I don't think she would be able to get all those weird stuff. Sucks!

ah, i was afraid i was the only one thinking this. about the xhantan gum, i know where i can get it, i know a store selling supplies for homemade cosmetics, and apparently it's great for creams. but i suppose it's a lot of effort just for a recipe.

Xanthum gum is, around here anyway, available in the baking section of most regular grocery stores. It's a binder.

I still haven't bought it, I don't use my current cookbooks enough as it is. I do love her cookie recipe that she posted on her blog, yummo.

Should I get ED&BV or one of her other two?

I think if I had to choose only one, I might get the new one. But the second, Vive le Vegan! is also stellar. The first one, The Everyday Vegan, isn't as exciting.

I have never made a recipe from this book yet. Any recommendations? I have no clue where to start or what to make. I'm not picky with my foods at all just no desserts.

I borrowed Vie le Vegan! from the library and I made the Banana Oat Bundles, I found them a bit soft but my parents really loved them. I've marked a few recipes that I want to try out.
