    Default Americans - Thanksgiving

OK..the week of Thanksgiving is upon us, and being that I'm taking the week off (theoretically of course), and I've completed my travels, I'm wondering what everybody else is having for Thanksgiving, or any other thanksgiving related stories.

I've settled for tofurkey, after struggling with the last several years trying to find some unfleshy part of the kitchen to cook up something new. I can also tell you that Thanksgiving is probably the hardest holiday for me...the smell always gets to me...the desire goes away once I see the bird. That being said, my first Thanksgiving as a vegetarian was certainly my most difficult challenge since the diet change...

    I am making:

    - roasted butternut squash dip & white bean dip w/ crackers, pita chips, cucumbers & carrots for appetizer
    - southwestern corn pudding
    - acorn squashes w/ wild rice & kale stuffing
    - pecan, apple & raisin coleslaw
    - jellied cranberry molds
    - holiday flavored bundt cake

I'm spending the day at a friend's house, who is making turkey, mashed potatoes & cornbread stuffing w/ sausage. But he's given me free license to bring/make as much as I want, so yay!

    I am making
    -nut roast
    -dressing
    -mashed potatoes and gravy
    -cranberry sauce
    -greenbeans
    -roasted caulifower with tahini sauce
-vegan pumpkin pie with soyatoo whipped cream

My boyfriend and I decided to have our own private thanksgiving this year with all vegan food. My parents think I am going to his family's house, but I think for the most part they are relieved as they won't have to make me anything/feel bad for me making my own food. I am very excited about this actually.

I'm eating at my mom's. I'm personally cooking:
--Tofurkey with carrots, leeks, and mushrooms, plus Tofurkey stuffing and gravy.
    --cranberry sauce
--seasoned wild and brown rice mix
--pumpkin chocolate chip cupcakes with cinnamon icing (from "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World")

I'm bringing frozen rolls to bake, and my mom keeps the vegetables free of animal products. So, I'll also have potatoes, green beans, and corn to eat.

    Happy T-Day everyone!

I was thinking that I wasn't gonna celebrate this year because it's got kinda sham roots as a holiday and plus the whole turkey thing. Then, while shopping today I saw that they had one more Tofurky Roast left, and I snatched it up, along with Silk Pumpkin Spice drink.

I became vegan right after Thanksgiving last year (coming up on my veganniversary, eh?), and since I was vegetarian at the time I just didn't eat the turkey but had everything else. I think what enticed me to buy the Tofurky was that I thought it would be fun to cook myself a full on vegan thanksgiving feast.

So basically I got caught up in the spirit more than I thought I would.

It will be the best cookbook you ever buy (except for your pants size). Seriously, check the thread on it to see what everyone is raving about.

There are some great ideas on this thread. I'm very curious about the nut loaf.

    Hi,

I am having Tofurkery with roasted vegetables
    Stuffing with Gravy
    Sweet Potatoes
    Other Veg
Homemade pumpkin pie with pecan crust and Soy Whip
(I converted a favorite pumpkin pie recipe I've had for years,
and found soy whipped cream at Whole Foods Market)

My husband will be eating a regular, traditional meal (turkey, etc.). I bought him a premade Turkey Breast roast with Gravy, so I won't have to go through the mess and horror of doing a full-blown turkey (has anyone ever washed a full turkey? It's like bathing a baby!)

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

OK...I have a funny story here. Thanksgiving a couple of years ago my wife and I were at my parents. My mom, who usually does a big carnivorous spread for my siblings and families was sick with the stomach flu. My wife and I ended up making the majority of the Thanksgiving day dinner, with brief interruptions to my sleeping (or puking) mother for instructions. The one thing I refused to do was prep and stuff the bird. I remember telling my father something on the order of...."I'll use real milk and butter for the potatoes (setting aside some for my family of course with soymilk), I'll take care of the other animal products, but there is no way in hell I am sticking my hand up the ass of that bird!" Your note about washing the bird just reminded me of that...

Since I sprained my ankle (good timing!), I'll be directing my husband to make:

    Tofurky
    Mashed potatoes
    Corn
    Pumpkin pie

Which doesn't seem like much, but since there's only two people at our table, it'll do fine. We don't do the whole family Thanksgiving thing because the sight/smell of and fanfare around the unfortunate turkey nauseates and disturbs me to no end.

    Mmmm these meals sound great!

    We just finished eating:
veg lasagna with zucchini, eggplant, and basil-tofu ricotta
    roasted smashed rosemary new potatoes
    black-eyed pea and quinoa croquettes
    rather plain salads
and for desert, mocha chocolate chip muffins with espresso "ice cream"

(the ricotta, croquettes, and muffins are a courtesy of Vegan with a Vengeance)

    I'm soooo stuffed!

meh.... i got alot of shit at dinner today.
even got accused of being anorexic. hah.
and got into yet nother argument with my family, because they're all ignorant meat eaters...
my dad keeps saying, "But it's good for you! I understand the no-meat, but you need some milk and eggs and cheese!"
even though i showed him a million times that its not necessary.

they make me so mad sometimes....

so i ended up eating some vegetables and an apple.
    hehe.

yes, it would be a whole lot better if everyone was vegan

i pretty much expected it, so it really doesnt bother me. i try to avoid oarguments as much as possible, so i spent most of my day away from everyone. i played with my baby cousin and was upstairs on the computer (on VF )
    It worked out alright, IMO.

we're having another thanksgiving meal today. we have a HUGE family (my grandma has 12 kids!) and we go around to everyones house. hopefully today i wont get as much shit. it's at my house, so i'll spend most of the day up in my room playing guitar or something

I had a delicious vegan Thanksgiving (my first one ever).
    I made
-A nut roast with atuffing ( a PETA recipe)
    -Roasted Cauliflour with tahini sauce
    -Mashed potatoes and gravy
    -Cranberry sauce
    -Green Beans
    -Pumpkin Pie

I cooked for my boyfriend (who is vegan) and his not-vegan roommate. His roommate, who is also very picky, ate everything except the cauliflower, and even said the pumpkin pie was the best he'd ever had. I think it was a success, and i'm super happy and relieved.

    We generally have good Thanksgivings.

Tofurkey and all that stuff... (but I love vegan pumpkin pie more than anything!)

This year was horrible, but that was less due to the food, and more due to the fact that our entire family was sick and the in-laws offer horrible support for ill people. Quarantine may help those folks avoid illness, but that fucked us over bad.

That stinks, Rodolfo. The only thing I really hate about the holiday season is how everyone always gets sick.
I had a delicious vegan thanksgiving with my family and friends. My mom prepared a ham because not everyone in the family is veggie but the majority of the food was vegetarian or vegan.
    The highlights were:
    Celebration Roast and Veggie Gravy
    Cornbread
    Cornbread dressing
    Green Bean Casserole
    Pumpkin Spice Cake
    Pumpkin Souflees

My family met my boyfriend's family for the first time, also. My parents hosted the meal and thankfully, everything went well!

Are the other vegan "roasts" and Tofurky very different from each other?

yeah seriously. A parent that understanding and accomodating is a pretty high rarity.

I ended up eating mashed potatos made creamy with soy milk / mixed veggies / a bowl of chili / an apple/walnut salad
