    Default Dennis 4 President

Now I only know a little about US politics but I know that if I was an American I'd probably be a democrat. What do you lot think of this guy? I read somewhere that he is vegan and from his replies on CNN (a you tube video I watched) it would do the world a huge favour if he were to become president. Any bad press for this guy? I got my info from vegan.com and dennis4president.com

For all the good he could do it's still technically impossible for anyone other than the two main parties to gain presidency because you can only vote for your own local candidate. If everyone in the country voted for the same people as opposed to a per state vote then the results could be much fairer. As it is a third party would need candidates to be elected in many states and thefore independants can never win.

At least that's how I understand it.

I thought he was a democrat? Proportional representation is what pre WW2 Germany used and it is the most advanced and fair way to vote. However it will never occur here as in which case Labour would not be in a majority and would probably have to form a coalition government. What fun that would be ay?

It appears so, but the reason I mentioned independants is that every election there are hopes pinned on someone who will never make it to the White House and it's a shame.

Third party candidates do show up on our ballots, as long as that party is registered/recognized in the state. Most states regulate ballot access by petition. Many third party candidates accept the nomination of a variety of like-minded parties, in order to gain country-wide ballot access (such as the Green Party, the Reform Party, the Working Families Party, the Socialist Party ...).

Wow this guy so should be president! However, he has to get throught the democrat primaries to be their candidate - and that seems very unlikely with Clinton seemingly sailing to victory.

    Shame really.

Great guy. Really the only one I'd want running the country. Just a look at his voting record makes me smile.

I wish we had someone like him in the UK. Instead we have an unelected fool of a prime minister and although I'm a lefty I can't stand Labour, hate the conservatives ( want to repeal the hunting act/ section 28 etc) and the lib dems are really pro Europe which I am not. I think we should all join forces and start our own polictical party. Vegan Forum Party lol

I don't think we would get much done as a party, we would all be chatting on VF all day and not making any policy ha ha.

I prefer Lib Dem/ Green party to anyone else but my local area only has a choice between BNP and Labour.

I signed something yesterday on the street to get fox hunting banned.

They should ban all hunting and fishing...but hey we are vegan...what else are we supposed to think?

Well I live in a majority Labour area and I haven't had the chance to vote yet here but I'm sure it will be greens, Labour, tories or Lib Dems as its a pretty big town.

Well we moved from a Conservative area with a lib dem councillor to an area with a lib dem council, lib dem councillor and lib dem MP. All in all, I'm just happy that conservative are 3rd and that there are no fascists. Though I do like a good protest...

That's exactly the issue - as we gear up for primaries, he's running as a major party candidate which is an impossible win (but don't count on Hil just yet - front runners in the Dem party have a way of falling apart when there's no incumbant). This election cycle should be good fun . I have to say, there's almost always someone running I can get behind - it's just getting everyone else behind them that seems to be the problem.

So I'd like to say go Dennis! Our primary is in two months ...

I like all this talk about UK politics - I have no idea how things really work over there ... keep the info coming!

We have three main parties. Liberal Democrats, New Labour and Conservatives. Lib Dems have never been in power. Wales & Scotland have some different parties and I think the Scottish National Party are in power in Scotland at the moment. What do you wanna know about British politics?

yeah, I saw that video where Kucinich was feeding turkeys for Thanksgiving and he said "imagine a white house where we eat tofurkey on Thanksgiving"

Even aside from being vegan he sounds pretty awesome. It's really depressing that he probably won't win.

I even took this quiz, and Dennis and I agree on a lot of other issues, too. He's my buddy, he just doesn't know it.
It's a pretty awesome quiz, even though I wish there were more options sometimes...but for the most part, it's accurate.

Although they haven't their predecessors the Liberals have had a number of terms in power. I think it would be difficult for them to do a worse job than the big two. Labour are dismantling our freedoms at a furious pace and the Conservatives have never been a party of the people. Their 'green and fair' facade of present is farcical.

Hey cruelkitti - when I did that quiz I was matched up with Rudy Giuliani. I think I didn't understand a couple of questions though, I should have paid attention in my American Politics classes at uni.

(I don't know why I'm saying matched up, it's not a dating site.)

Lib Dems have been in power - though last in about 1911 I think. They introduced the pension, funeral plans and social welfare.

People LOVE Rudy...well at least the people of New York, but in general, I've only heard good press.

It sucks pretty bad (livin' under dubya)...whenever I watch one of his bullshit speeches, it feels like one of my illiterate, sawed-off shotgun-totin' neighbors somehow became president and is puffing their chest out in ignorant pride.

From what I have seen here living in the US, it's the M&M's of politics, the candidate with the Money and the Media gets the presidency.

I am willing to bet more than half of democrats would vote for Kucinich but they don't know anything about him. Why? The media will only give showing to the candidates they like, Clinton, Obama, and sometimes Edwards. Nobody even knows who Kucinich is, even though he is more of a democrat than the others. In the last CNN debate he was given 6 MINUTES of talk time in a 2 HOUR debate...

    He's:
vegan (this, of course is evil)
catholic (it's rare, Kennedy was lucky; americans are supposed to be protestent)
    divorced twice (downright un-american)
grew up poor (at times lived in a car; americans hate the poor)
liberal even for a liberal (americans are supposed to be consrevative or moderate)
would pull out of war ASAP
he refuses to bend over for big business (america loves its big business)
he wants universal heathcare (we've been taught that this is communism)
    against flag-burning laws (flag=american pride)
pro-choice (killing little americans is bad)

posted internal company memos (from Diebold Election Systems) on his website in which company executives promised to deliver the 2004 Ohio election to Bush (^ wiki)

plus, wasn't he the one who, when asked why he didn't vote for the Patriot Act, he said "because I read it"?

I guess this IS how America is viewed, but I don't really know anyone that hates poor people, the only ones that haven't been divorced 1.) haven't been married 2.) haven't been married long enough 3.) are 80 years old and have been with the same person since they were 12 and can't stand eachother or 4.) are gay and can't get married...so therefore can't get a divorce.
Everyone I know wants universal healthcare...but I wonder if we can even afford it with the deficit...but HEY...I'LL TAKE THAT SHIT IN A SECOND!
Everywhere I turn are "I hate walmart" stickers, and "I support local business" So...yeah...from a distance...the big fucks are the ones who like the big businesses...but I think there are more of us middle class/poverty stricken people who hate big business...even though some are forced to support big businesses because they live from paycheck to paycheck.
The intelligent people I know classify themselves as liberal or democrat.
I don't know any protestants, but I know (and like) several catholics, satanists, pagan, wiccan, agnostic, atheist and so many more.

so yeah...that's what America "is" because that's what they want it to be...

Kinda like how a coworker I know talked of her unborn child for 8 months as if it were a boy, bought it boy clothes, even picked out a boy name...because she was hoping she would have a boy...and when she gave birth to a baby girl she was at a loss for words.

I am going to vote for him even if it seems like a lost cause, because I hear a lot of people saying "what's the point?" It's all the "what's the point?" ers that are going to put someone less awesome in office.

Yes, and he and Ron Paul were the only two that said they would instantly repeal the Patriot Act, reinstate Habeus Corpus, etc.

The Green Party of England and Wales does explicitly support vegans. For example:

    http://policy.greenparty.org.uk/mfss/Food.html

FD302 We would encourage the teaching of vegetarian and vegan nutrition systems in schools and, at greater depth, to medical students.

FD304 Vegetarian and vegan choices would be introduced to all school meals and other public institutions' menus.

I didn't mean that they don't exist... I was merely trying to say that Americans (or anyone for that matter) don't fall into strict categories...that not everyone is "this" and not "that". I don't agree with a lot of what happens in our country, and I don't agree with the government a good chunk of the time...
But I do live in America, and I don't want to be classified as anything other than another person with her own choices, personality and set of morals.

Well, I was being cynically sarcastic, but also you don't live in Louisiana! Sometimes it seems like it's only the people who believe in this idea of America that care enough to vote. I know ONE person besides myself who votes. ONE. The others all say that one vote doesn't count, but if they all got together and convinced each other to vote, it'd be much different. I vote not only to vote, but also in case I can get just one more person I know to vote, and they can get another.

I'm sure you can imagine. I've met a ton of people who's sons and husbands are on their 3rd & 4th tours of Iraq, and they put on these false empty smiles and recite some slogon about how proud they are of them. This woman the other day was buying something for a package for her grandson, and after smiling about him being away, she started trailing off and looking at the ground, and I felt so sad for her and her family. A girl I work with (who's very liberal) after stating that a woman couldn't be president because of her period, said that we HAD to go to war because look at what THEY did to US. I stood quietly instead of ranting about geography, politics, and 9/11 conspiracy theories with cut steel and pre-hit explosions, and missile evidence. Minimum wage is finally rising, but I still have to get a second job over the holidays to be okay on money. I mean, I'm not starving, but one unexpected thing, and I'm in trouble.

Let's just say I'm damn lucky I'm healthy and have a university clinic for small things. Anything beyond a cold, and watch out. My sister's mom-in-law has a lot of health problems. She's a public school teacher with a master's degree, teaches adult literacy classes to the poor on her spare time. Any time she gets an infection or has heart troubles, or any time my sister's husband gets a spider bite or rat bite or my sister has a seizure, they have to drive 3 hours to charity hospital (or what's left of it after Katrina) and waitusualy 8 to 16 hours to get seen. When this can't be done, each in-city visit usually results in between $500 and $2000 being owed.

There are lots of clinics that are out-patient and not at the hospital, and they give discounts of you're not insured. When I got sick for two months with a bronchial infection, I went there. I ended up paying about $150 for a visit and medication, but at those places they have such little time for you, and very little decent equipment. They usually guess at what you have and perscribe the most common treatment. They just don't have the ability to treat you very well. At my school clinic, I was treated based on what was going around, but I only paid $12 (plus tuition of course).

    Yeah...unless you're well-off, don't get sick...and don't dare miss work if you ARE sick.

I wish we had someone of stature HERE that felt that way...

Ha ha. What do ppl generally think of Rudy? He was supposed to have been popular wasn't he?

Also what is it like being in a country with Dubya as president?
    1. Rudy was and is popular among the right-wing since they value form over substance (his pretending to accomplish anything against crime and pretending that he saved lives during the 9/11 attack).

He was and is popular among people in the center who were/are scared out of their wits by crime/terrorists (fraidycats).

    2. At this point I'm just hoping we don't sink into a Second Great Depression.

    3. Hell with both of them--This is the Kucinich thread!

I was in some political-focuses threads in other forums...people are just blindly voting for Clinton or Obama because they think "it's about time we had a black/female president"...
This makes me so sad...YES, having a female/black president would show how far we've come...it would be but an EXAMPLE.
Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama aren't any different from the average white male candidate, and yet people think their vagina/skin is gonna bring the change that we need.
One lady started a thread titled "Is Oprah running for president?"
I laughed because I thought it was a joke, and a very good one at that.
But then I realized she was serious. And in the end, only about 5 out of 15 responses knew that Oprah was NOT running for president, but rather is Obamas' celebrity endorsement. The ladies response..."Oh, well, then he's got my vote..."

How scary. People voting for someone because their favorite TALK SHOW HOST is voting for them...because the TELEVISION tells them too...how depressing.

My "beef" with both of them is that they are both planning on continuing to fund the war full blast!! They both voted YES for the Patriot Act. (that right there is enough to make me think thrice before voting for someone).

    *sigh* I'm so depressed.

yeah, I try not to take for granite some of the personal freedoms that I do have, but it pisses me off that people are abusing these rights by voting for someone they know nothing about...if you don't know and don't care enough to LEARN, then don't vote! PLEASE, don't vote!!

    Candidate match game:
Was a close call between Dennis Kucinich and Make Gravel with nobody else even near them, Dennis was just in front though.

I was just thinking how funny would be to just have that game in polling booths, for the people who dont really know who they are voting for anyway
