    Default Instead of Quorn

In the past when I did my veggie meals I used to use Quorn pieces in some of the currys etc... but not sure what to use now to replace it.

I have looked at other stuff which is similar but they are not vegan. Does anyone have any suggestions of which product to use instead that is.

I have a nice vegan Korma waiting to be used up.

I thought maybe some tofu but as hubby will be eating it also, cant use this as he dislikes it.

    Thanks xx

Seitan maybe, or the Redwoods Vegi Deli Chicken Style pieces (which are very much like the quorn pieces you mentioned)?

We use the 'taifun' flavoured tofu in a lot of our curries, when we're not using chickpeas or lentils. The basil flavour one is nice is a thai curry.

    see here

You could try hubby with this as it's not like 'normal' tofu.

Realeat veggie mince is good in chilli and shepherd's pie etc.. My sister uses this even though she's not even veggie.

Dried texturised vegetable protein or chunks cooked up with gravy powder or bouillion, or Realeat frozen veggie mince. My omni neighbour uses the latter and fools her meat- loving family.

you can get Fry's chicken style chunks and beef style strips from holland and barrats. my partner likes them, i don't mind them but i find them a bit salty. they are a bit expensive though, so maybe as a treat? but you'll get used to beans/chick peas and prefer them. if i fancy a 'meaty' texture in curry/stew/casserole etc i use mushrooms or aubergine.

good luck with whatever you go with and remember...experiment

The Redwood company do a range of 'Cheatin' chunks and roasts and they are 100% vegan. I get mine in a health food shop, which although is quite a distance away from me, is worth the effort to visit!

Red lentils work quite well as a substitute for meat in sauces etc, and they have the advantage that they cook fast. Obviously the texture isn't exactly the same but you soon adjust.

Fake meats are fine now and then but perhaps not a good thing to have as a staple as they are a bit sort of synthetic aren't they?

I love lentils too Harpy, they are very versatile. As far as the fake meats being 'synthetic' the Redwood ones are made from wheat and vegetable protein so I don't view them as being synthetic. They are just a handy sort of food to have around especially if you need to prepare something quickly and haven't the time to start cooking something from scratch.

Yes, I quite like the Redwood ones now and then, but just recently I've noticed that they give me tremendous indigestion if I eat more than a very small quantity, so I think my innards may be trying to tell me something

FWIW I'm OK with the ones that are just made of tofu, though, like those Taifun frankfurters.

Oh, and there is ASDA meat free chicken style fillets.

I find the Realeat, Redwoods, and ASDA vegan stuff is pretty "natural". The Fry's stuff seems more processed and is generally very salty.

Those are vegan? Are they in the refrigerated or frozen section. I need to find some!

The ASDA fillet things are in the freezer section.

They do have "flavours" on the ingredients, but no milk/egg allergens, so they look fine to me. The flavouring is very likely to be yeast extract or hydrolysed vegetable protein (ie a source of umami flavour)

Talking of umami, I meant to mention that large (open) mushrooms, roughly sliced, are also not bad "meat substitutes" in some dishes from the taste and texture point of view, though they wouldn't supply much protein of course.

How about freezing some tofu, defrosting it, marinading it and using that. The freezing process changes the texture of the tofu so it's more firmer and chewier.

I sometimes use Punjabi Warian, these are solid-ish spicy ball made from lentils, that are crushed up and used in savory dishes. Recipe here

Yes, bryzee, you can buy seitan ready-made - they sell it chilled in Fresh and Wild/Wholefoods; those tins of mock duck are just flavoured seitan (in a tin!) I believe.

I made it once and it was a bit of a faff - you have to use high-gluten flour and sort of wash the dough repeatedly to get rid of the starch. Might be easier with this: http://www.veganstore.co.uk/Merchant...oduct_Code=399

You can also buy seitan slices here in Newcastle. Fenwick's Food Hall sell them (check chilled section) as do Almonds and Raisins. I don't think it would be much like quorn though.

It's a long time since I had Quorn, but I think some versions of seitan may be not that dissimilar in that they have a grainy texture that resembles meat quite closely - the mock duck does and the seitan I made myself did. The seitan slices are probably more like Spam than anything else though
