Default Elections in North America - please explain

Would somebody explain to me a little about the current elections in North America please.

Obviously I know the Democratic and Republican parties are electing their leader who will run for president.

But why does it take so long? Are elections held in every single state? If so, who is entitled to vote in them? Is it subscribed party members?

What are secondary and primary elections?

    Thank you

PS I was surprised by how pleased I was that Hillary Clinton won the other day!

It takes so long because the candidates are so busy spending money on their campaigns. Not really, but our elections are far more complicated than they should be. I'm sure this link can explain it far better that I can.

I was reading a magazine article the other day that said it didn't really matter who won - America was still going to be run by the corporate machine anyway.

So true Roxy. He who has the money can afford to grease the machines.

Just the same as the UK. We will never know the names of those who are truly in charge. Elected frontmen are just that.

It seems to take so long because the most insignificant states have their primaries first to make their say have more importance. In this election many other states moved their primaries to early dates.

Nowadays the way the nominees are chosen is more democratic than it was just a few decades ago.

Whether you have to be registered to the party varies from state to state.

And to the cynics who think the pesidency will be in the pocket of the corporations no matter what; I would say, possibly, but the degree to which they are controled and by which corporations matters greatly.
