Students get vegan cookery lesson

Two teachers at an American school gave students a vegan cookery lesson as part of a nationwide campaign to highlight global warming.

The Patriot Ledger newspaper has reported that the Hingham High School teachers gave the demonstration to raise awareness about the meat industry's contribution to climate change.

The Massachusetts school was among 1,500 educational institutions and community groups taking part in a National Teach-In Day. The event was co-ordinated by Focus the Nation, a national initiative aimed at encouraging people to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"Consumer sciences teachers Rose Doran and Diane Lanctot teamed up for a demonstration of vegan cooking," the newspaper outlined. "Before trying out some vegan recipes, Lanctot explained how raising animals on factory farms produces greenhouse gases and can pollute water supplies."

''We have a society of students growing up being consumers,'' Doran said. ''We hope they learn they can make some sacrifices to help the planet and eat responsibly as well as nutritionally.''
