Thread: Vegan Spaghetti-O's?

    Default Vegan Spaghetti-O's?

So, since going vegan I have been surprised by how little I actually miss from my pre-vegan days. I don't miss cheese half as much as I thought and could do without regular milk and ice cream. I miss cake but have learned to make my own and, aside from the convenience and variety enabled by buying candy bars in convenience stores, am perfectly happy with rice milk alternative chocolates. Strangely, though, one of the things I really miss right now are Spaghetti-O's. They're certainly not vegan because of the "cheese" part of their tomato and cheese sauce, but I definitely imagine that, were they so inclined, some shrewd company could make something relatively similar without incorporating dairy. Does anyone know of a company that makes an imitation/generic/whatever spaghetti-o's type product that would be vegan? I could really go for some of these things right now.

    Help?

I would seriously suggest trying Amy's Organic Alphabet Soup. It's a lot like Spaghetti-O's, but it has some veggies added. My sister is addicted to the stuff. If you still want a little "cheesier" flavor, try adding a couple tsp. of nutritional yeast. (In fact, even if all you have is tomato soup try adding a little nutritional yeast and maybe some pasta- it is amazing!)

Odd. You can find vegan spaghetti-O's (or spaghetti hoops as they're usually called here) quite easily in the UK. I wonder why they have cheese added to them in the US but not in the UK.

I had the same dilema when I became vegan. If you can find a shop near you that specialises in British foods, you will find vegan tinned spaghetti there Well that's where I found mine.

Also, there is a brand called Orgran, which is available in many countries throughout the world. They also make a really awesome tinned spaghetti that's completely vegan.

    Good luck with your search!

All our foods have to be obnoxious and full of unnecessary ingredients. I guess it's just the (lame) American way. There are SO many things that I pick up at the supermarket thinking they MUST be vegan only to check the label and find that loads of animal ingredients have been inexplicably thrown into the mix. If you see me in a supermarket the odds are good that I will be holding a "whole wheat" something or other, staring awestruck at the label and lipping "why is THAT there!?" in confusion. I tell ya'.

Anyway, huge thanks for all the suggestions. I live in the middle of Philadelphia so I'm thinking there MUST be a British food around somewhere. I don't know of any off the top of my head, but I will definitely ask around and see if I can't find something. I know loads of places that sell Amy's though (I eat their Tofu scrambles, Teriyaki bowls & enchiladas like a fiend) so I will definitely grab some of that Alphabet soup next time I go shopping. Again, thanks a ton!
