EmmaP, you are pure entertainment! I love your mad pictures.

Yum, please buy another avocado. Wait until you can squeeze it enough to put a little dent in it, but not until it's spreadably soft. Then cut it into slices and maybe try it with houmous and some salad in a pitta or something like that. I'm offering you the Stu Guarantee that you will love it.

I used to hate it when I was little, but eat it a few times and you'll loooove it. Try in a toasted bagel with veganaise and tomatoes and pesto and you will be addicted in no time!
I want to eat that so much now, dammit

Yum - it's not a squishy vegetable - it's a fruit that's yielding to the bite! Please don't give up - if you're not familiar with the taste, maybe order some in a sandwich with hummus in a sandwich shop or something to start off with.

They're horrible if they're too ripe.

Maybe for your next attempt you could buy one of those expensive ready-ripened ones and EAT IT THE SAME DAY! That way you won't have to worry about when it's going to be ready. (Or take up emmapresley's excellent offer...)

Avodado's a fruit? Wow- i learnt something today and it is only 8am!

Thanks for all your suggestions. I might try it again when i go shopping net time and get one of those ripe ones. I was suprised how big the stone was!!

Anyways... i'll let you know how i get on next time

I wouldn't normally go for the "ripe and ready" ones as they seem a rip off but it might be a good idea for your first time!

Of course eating avocados is completely optional (and they aren't all that virtuous from the "local food" perspective) but it seems a shame never to have them at all if you might enjoy them.

Not only that, but technically - as in only scientists will ever say this because otherwise everyone else will get really confused - an avocado is a berry!

Although looking at this thread I think you should stay as far away from them as possible before you too become some kind of drug-pushing addict and find yourself standing on shadowy street corners trying to force people to try your avocado.

"Psst, wanna try some avocado? Go on, just a little taste. Our secret. It's pure Colombian, none of that Spanish stuff."

In the Philippines they eat avocado ice cream, it isnt vegan but it got me thinking.

This is a recipe I found online somewhere and saved to my recipe folder

    2 cups soya milk
    3/4 cup sugar
    1 pinch salt
    3 slices fresh orange zest(4-by 1-inch)
    2 tablespoons cornstarch
    2 firm-ripe california avocados(1 to 1 1/4 lb total)
    500 ml vitamin C powder(crush a chewable pill)

Bring 1 3/4 cups soy milk, 1/2 cup sugar, zest, and a pinch of salt to a simmer in a 2-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat. Whisk together cornstarch and remaining 1/4 cup milk in a small bowl until smooth, then whisk into simmering milk. Bring to a boil, whisking constantly, and boil 1 minute. Transfer mixture to a metal bowl, then set bowl in a larger bowl of ice and cold water and cool completely, stirring frequently. Discard zest.

Quarter, pit, and peel avocados, then puree with vitamin C and remaining 1/4 cup sugar in a food processor until smooth. Add soy milk mixture and blend well.

Freeze avocado mixture in ice cream maker. Transfer to an airtight container and freeze until hardened, about 1 hour.

Anyway I dont have most of that fancy stuff (yes I find orange zest and corn starch fancy ) so I just used what I did have. I think the vitamin c tablet would be good cause mine turned a strange colour, also the ice cream maker would probably make it smoother.

My friend is super fussy but ate it and he isnt vegan - so I'm brave enough to post my guessing with whatever kind of attempt here.
The day breaks and everything is new.

all the talk of avocado on here motivated me to buy two yesterday.
i mashed one up and put it on my sandwich with a little salt
the other i made into some guac for the family.
    thanks for all the tips.
added fun: i decided to use that wonderful pic and let my stone grow some roots!

I have just started mixing RIPE avocado with a little organic plamil mayo, and sticking it on crispbread. The Dr Kargs ones are really tasty.

And i love it! To ripen avocados quickly, put 'em next to other fruit...

In particular, apples or bananas (tomatoes work too, but if you're like me, you keep those in the fridge). They release ethylene, which hastens ripening in fruits. Easy way of turning cheap, rock-hard avocados into nice ripe ones: just let them sit in the same bowl as some apples for two or three days.

Noooooooooo. Refrigerating tomatoes destroys the flavour. (Though if you've bought them from a supermarket it's probably too late).
