Default Who Do You Think Is A Respected Vegetarian Peaceful Leader?

Who Do You Think Is A Respected Vegetarian Peaceful Leader Who Is Still Alive? I know there have been people throughout the world throughout history who have lived by example as peaceful leaders and ate and advocated a strict vegetarian diet. Only a few names come to my mind, but I'd like to see who you can think of. I prefer that the people you mention still be currently alive and someone who is well known throughout the world. I appreciate your feedback.

He may not be physically alive, but his spirit is certainly very much alive... Mahatma Gandhi. Just wish that he had pushed veganism rather than vegetarianism.

Satish Kumar. Former Jain monk. Walked the world for peace (specifically nuclear disarmament). Editor and founder of Resurgence magazine. Founder of Schumacher College and The Small School. Inspirational speaker and practical philosopher (Deep Ecology). Few people have influenced me as much as he and few work as tirelessly for peace and ecology. Perhaps more than anything else, I see him as a great spiritual leader.

I hope to see some of you at Aldermaston on Monday.

The Dalai Lama - still not fighting back against China because of his non-violent beliefs.
Thich NAht Hanh is also a Buddhist monk who is quite prominent in that circle.

Dalai Lama is a "flexitarian" apparently - meaning if he was to go to a country's head of state's banquet, he'd eat meat out of politeness to not harm their feelings

    Pah! Flexitarians!
As far as the entertainment business goes, I think Joaquin Phoenix is very much respected by the omni community. He won't wear animal-derived costumes. He isn't typically regarded as 'some animal rights wacko,' first and foremost.

I definitely second Kucinich and Zephaniah.

There are a lot of people in the artistic community who follow vegetarian lifestyles I have a lot of respect for - not leaders as such, but what you might call publicists on the issue.
There’s a statue that the abattoir erected to remind us all of their contributions. To me it marks Potemkin City Limits, this Francis cast in bronze.

My hero is the author of one of the first texts in the English language that sought to promote "vegetarianism" (change in name usage: in the eighteenth-century, this was essentially what we call veganism today)

Robert Morris "A Reasonable Plea for the Animal Creation" 1746

    Full title:

A reasonable plea for the animal creation: being a reply to a late
pamphlet, intituled, A dissertation on the voluntary eating of blood, &c. In which is
shewed, I. From the nature and reason of things, that we have no right to destroy,
much less to eat of any thing which has life II. That if the human food at first was
only the produce of the earth, and by positive command made immutable, then that
law or command must be immutably eternal.

The abstract from a paper I read about him:

"In 1746, Robert Morris, an 18th-century architectural innovator, authored A Reasonable Plea for the Animal Creation. It never entered the vegetarian canon, nor is it listed among his other published works. The bulk of the book is devoted to reprinting nine letters Morris had sent to a friend defending his abstinence from eating meat. He also responds to published arguments that the book of Genesis prohibits eating of blood but permits the eating of animals. I provide an introduction to the book and excerpts from the letters. Morris’s arguments include that in an interconnected world, flesh eating exhibits rank Pride and Haughtiness of Soul, that the Golden Rule guides humans not to prey on animals, that animal confinement causes illness and infections, and that we have no right of property from nature. Morris’s work is a valuable addition to vegetarian history, to discussions of veganism, and to factory farming and animal confinement debates. "

THe Dalai Lama eats meat... when it is served for him... so strictly speaking he is a flexitarian.
