    Default Moving to Newcastle

Hi folks, I did a search but didn't find much info, esp anything recent, so I was wondering if anyone can help!

I'm moving up to Newcastle to do an MSc in renewable energy, and was wondering....

1 Where to shop for food, groceries, living essentials etc. Heard good stuff about Fenwick's, where is that?
2 Where in the city centre or anywhere for that matter to eat out or order take aways
3 If anyone goes to the uni, if there are any uni cased cafes or shops that will provide!

    Thanks for your help!

    Here's the Newcastle Vegans thread
    http://www.veganforum.com/forums/sho...wcastle+vegans

Fenwicks Food Hall (Fenwicks is a large department store between Blackett St and Northumberland St) is quite good, it sells a good range of cheezely, and some other redwoods stuff, also Booja Booja ice cream. I was in there today and the fridge which they store the Cheezely etc had broke during the night and they had to hoi it all oot, quite tragic eh! Also in Fenwicks is Yo! sushi bar which will make up vegan sushi takeaway, I ask for veggie box no tamago and crunchy tofu salad.

Not far from Fenwicks is Almonds and Raisins (Princess Square, Upper Level), which is a health food shop with a good range of vegan supplies, pretty poor on the chilled stuff IMO.
A Waitrose has just opened near Jonn Lewis but I haven't been in yet.

On Clayton Street (not far from Fenwick's) you will find Scrumpy Willow and Singing Kettle, which specialise in local organic home cooked food and have a very good vegan menu.
    Wagamama has vegan options too.
There are a couple of places in the studenty suburb Heaton, The Grocers on Chillingham (locally known as Chilli) Road, which is really good for both chilled and non chilled vegan food, has fresh fruit n veg too, also in Heaton is Sky Apple Cafe, a vegetarian cafe.
Newcastle has a large asian community and there are a few chinese and pakistani supermarkets which are excellent for vegan basics. Particularly in the NE1 and NE4 areas.

There is a restaurant for just about every international cuisine, but no dedicated vegan restaurant (yet).

Thanks so much for that, it's helped a lot as this has all happened so suddenly! A lot of those places mentioned are walkable from uni so i'll be able to pick up supplies during the day before going to lovely Wallsend!

    Cheers,

I spent the last few days in Newcastle. There's a nice veggie pub on the quayside called Bob Trollop's. Most of the stuff on their menu is vegan. Although the beer in mostly not! BT's is almost underneath the Tyne Bridge, so it's pretty easy to find.

I went in Waitrose today and its quite good, more cauldron but no redwoods or booja booja at all.
I forgot to mention Co-op Food Hall, also quite near Fenwick's, on Newgate st. I do most of my shopping there as they deliver if you spend more than £25 and go through the checkout before 1 pm. They are very good for vegan toiletries and all the basic stuff, they also have quite a good selection of soya and otther non dairy milk.
There's a Co-op in Wallsend too, if you are living in Wallsend.
If you like Lush, that's near Fenwick's too. On the Central Arcade.

Newcastle is a great place for vegans

check out the local veggie vegan group & they have a veggie directory too

    http://www.vegne.co.uk

the couple who run the group are really nice & run a vegan store just outside of Newcastle - www.alternativestores.com.

I dont think so. not sure if A&R is still going. part of it became a polish eating thing & the remaining store was tiny. Ive heard it was up for sale ages ago

Almonds and Raisins was open a few weeks ago, I was shopping there. It looks like its shut until you go up to to the door on the left. The entrance is now shared with the Polish Cafe.
The Polish Cafe has more dominant frontage so Almonds and Raisins could be overlooked and appear to be closed.

    Hi

something strange - the reply I got in my inbox is much monger than the one posted on the forum - maybe its been edited or something

I know Alternativestores (formely soles) had a display of goods in A&R.
A&R was up for sale and I know alternativestores & someone else wanted to buy the business & put in a proper veggie eating thing.

From what I remember it fell through and the polish bit was leased out by the owner of A&R.
Since then A&R has been back up for sale with lots of rumours floating around. I know a few other ppl who wanted to buy the biz but havnt for some reason.

I have heard a lot of complaints about the new A&R store as its far too small for ppl to get into comfortably. Its a shame as the staff were always nice.

Newcastle has really lost some good health food & vegan shops as Out of this world also closed, another couple in gateshead have gone.

Alternative Stores have moved in the last few months as the previous premises were not a shop - but the new palce is quite big with a good range.

Ill check into A&R to see whats going on. That could be a really good shop if managed right.

I edited my post to delete my personal speculations about A&R.

My experience was the opposite of this, but it may well have changed in the last 3 years.
