Default Von Teese Clashes With PETA Over Foie Gras Fetish

I suppose it is yet more publicity for peta, but i disagree that they should freak out over foie gras when she clearly takes pleasure from the suffering of animals. Personally it just makes peta look ridiculous.

'Von Teese Clashes With PETA Over Foie Gras Fetish

Burlesque star Dita Von Teese has clashed with animal charity People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, after confessing her love for controversial French delicacy foie gras.

The exotic dancer has already been accused of hypocrisy for continuing to eat meat and wear fur, despite her ties to the animal rights organization.

And now she has confessed one of her favorite foods is the engorged liver of ducks and geese, telling The New York Times, "My guilty pleasure is eating foie gras in Paris. I feel guilty and horrible about it." [...]'

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/...entry_id=25393

Maybe her time would have been better spent promoting no-kill shelters.

I suppose the other side to this, is that at least peta are engaging with people that wear fur, eat meat and consume foie gras. But to have them at the forefront of a campaign? Is there no one else?

Peta and people associated with Peta never fail to surprise me, like eg. this Ingrid Newkirk quote:

"I loved meat, liver above all,'' she told me. If liver were somehow morally permissible, I asked her, would she eat it again? "My God, I would eat it tomorrow. Now. I would eat roadkill if I could. "I'd eat burgers, steak, anything. I love car racing and meat."
I'm not blaming her for what she says, it's just surprising that it's possible to 'love' eating animals so much if you're at the forefront of an organization promoting vegetarianism/veganism - even if she actually doesn't eat these animals.

Is PETA actually an institution for the morally inept? It seems to be an organisation staffed by the very very strange.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Organisations like PETA should be using influential and popular vegans and vegetarians - not hypocrits.

Did you read about these anti foie gras campaigners (not vegetarian despite the headline)?

are allying themselves in principle with members of the Animal Liberation Front, whose protests against foie gras have included throwing a brick through a restaurant window.

This is totally off topic, but....

Maybe the point is to show that no matter how much you love the taste of meat, that is not an excuse for eating animals. So many vegetarians and vegans talk about how they don't miss meat, don't want to eat meat, etc.... I think sometimes to omnis it can seem like we are veg*ns by happenstance instead of by moral choice (we just don't like the taste of meat). We send out these conflicting messages, because we insist that we're not interested in meat, and that it doesn't taste good, but then when omnis say "I like meat too much" we say "That's no excuse."

I honestly admire hardcore meat-lovers who quit eating animals more than people who never really liked meat and quit (and I have met tons of the latter, and few of the former). People who really love the taste of meat have given up more.

yes, that's a good point. I used to love meat, bloody steaks, the lot (*sorry everyone!*). When omnis use that 'tastes so good' excuse to me i tell them how much in used to love meat, but also point out that veganism opened my eyes to many more tasty and guilt-free ways of eating.

That is a good point....but I honestly don't miss the taste of that stuff generally. I missed cheese and sushi at first but I found that my body didn't really want that stuff after a few weeks anyway. I can't lie!

PETA = celebrity obsessed annoying hypocrites (I did some time in the PETA house so I know first hand what liars they are) ...

I agree with the comment that I give people so much credit who love meat and are strong enough to give it up, whereas those who hated meat from the get-go.

I never liked meat, but it was damn hard giving up my fish and cheese, but I'm doing it, so I'm giving myself and other fish-cheese lovers a big pat on the back here

AND let's give big credit to those who loved food that had non-vegan by-products in them and gave them up too ... when I'm out and about I always have my vegan wine list handy so I don't use products that use bone-char filters

I did a stint back in '94, Healthy. Really hardworking honest folk that got the job done and were quite willing to kiss celebrity ass if it got the big publicity. What did you experience?
Of course, many staffers had worked/went on to work at other NGOs.
