    Default Starbucks' vegan list

I wrote to Starbucks in February to find out which drinks were safe, they sent me the following email:

Thank you for taking the time to contact Starbucks Coffee Company regarding the nutritional details of our current beverage range.

The following drinks in our menu range are vegan:

    * Cappuccino made with soy milk
    * Latte made with soy milk
    * Classic Hot Chocolate made with soy milk and no whipped cream
    * Chai Tea Latte made with soy milk
    * Filter Coffee of the Week (black/with a dash of soy milk)
    * Caffe Misto made with soy milk
    * Americano (black/with a dash of soy milk)
    * Mocha made with soy milk and no whipped cream
    * Mango Passionfruit Frappuccino
    * Raspberry Blackcurrant Frappuccino
    * All 'add syrups' such as vanilla, caramel, Irish cream, hazelnut, etc (this does not include the caramel drizzle topping as this contains dairy)

Please note that both the cream and coffee-based Frappuccinos contain dairy and are therefore not vegan-friendly. This is also the same with the Signature hot chocolate.

It may be different ingredients in Australia but the chai definitely contains honey here (it's a powdered chai I believe).

And I'd be very suspicious of their claiming the hot chocolate to be vegan merely because it sounds too good to be true :P

Isn't starbucks trying to be all fairtrade these days? Fair trade hot chocolate is usually pretty pure, the stuff I have from CocoDirect is just Sugar and Coco.

yeah, that's probably what their "classic" hot chocolate stuff is - but the other one is a syrup. I think they use that as stadard if you ask for a "hot chocolate".

Thanks! That's excellent to know. I don't have one near me, but I am going home this weekend and there is one by my parent's house. (Its kind of a guilty pleasure of mine, but I didn't know all of that stuff was vegan (minus the chai latte)). I am tempted to try one of those fruit frapps I have always gotten a latte with soy milk and added caramel syrup.

the other products listed are vegan in US too.

the only ones I have not yet asked about on the above list are all the syrups (which most likely are vegan) and the frappacinos.

I don't like starbucks, and I wouldn't trust their vegan list...just because I am so suspicious of them...

But as for the convinent factor of having one on every coner...I suppose I am glad that they have quite extensive vegan list...

I don't like that they charge an extra $.40 or .50 for soy milk prepared drinks. Even when I ask to borrow the soy for just my plain coffee they sometimes charge. It is entirely dependent on who happens to serve you. At least they do post on the menu that there is an added charge so I don't feel as I have a right to complain.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
I once picked up to read the "cinnamon" container at the sugar/cream station and was shocked that it read "cinnamon strudel topping" and had an ingredient list which included butter. I asked, "Is this what you always put out for cinnamon?" and was told "No, but when we run out we use that instead. Try it. It's quite good!"

Where this kind of sucks, I am just glad that keep carrying soy milk. Where I live, I imagine that if they don't charge extra, they will lose money as I bet not enough people order soy to keep it in stock. Soy milk lasts a lot longer than dairy milk, but not forever, so I am willing to pay the extra charge to keep them buying it.

Fondducoeur, good point. It's really more the inconsistency of charging me extra for the couple of tablespoons I put in my regular coffee that bugs me the most, not the actual charge itself. Also, Whole Foods Supermarket doesn't charge extra for soy milk, even in a prepared drink, and they probably go through much smaller bulk purchases of the stuff.

I understand Mahk, I think they should charge for soy if you substitute it in a latte or cap or other prepaired drink, but not if you use it in plain brewed coffee...they have half and half and other milks and sugar and stuff like that for free for omin's drinks, why do they have to charge for such a small amount? its not like you are going to pour half a cup in your coffee...At least thats how we ran it at the coffee shop I worked at.

There's an Australian version of Starbucks called Hudsons. They don't charge any extra for soy milk, plus they have a light soy option and an organic fairtrade option!

Aaaaaaand their chai is definitely vegan.

    Correct!

I can confirm that the Chai contains honey in Canada too.

Is there a Hudson's in Brisbane do you know?

I had some soy latte's at Gloria Jean's when I was down there visiting my family.

Funny you should mention this. Manhattan is on the list of places I have to live before I die, if only for a year. It also means growing a goatee, drinking lots of coffee, eating lots of donuts and playing in a jazz trio.

    Nice.

Exactly what we want to do. We said we have to live in NYC even if just for a year.

Did you do a sunset from Brooklyn Heights Promenade?

That was so good, and then to a Chinese place nearby that had portions (including some kind of fake fish using seaweed for the skin) so huge that we needed a doggy bag. Luckily the hotel had a microwave in the room.

Aye, sorry about that. Had I remembered before you left I would have definitely said to go there, very romantic as you are looking over both Manhattan and Liberty Island.

Seem to have my copy of the Vegan Guide of NY to hand, so a quick look reveals the Chinese Place was "The Greens" at 128 Montague Street, vegan and kosher. But if it is vegan then obviously it is kosher. Silly book.
