    Default Kangaroo cull in canberra

    Dear Friends of our Kangaroos,

At some point in the last two months you kindly added your signature
to the Petition to Save the Belconnen Kangaroos - thank you. It was
always my intention to write to you to let you know of the outcome,
and I had sincerely hoped that the news would be good. For a while it
looked like we had won the battle to save these 400+ kangaroos.

Sadly however, the news is not good: THE UNNECESSARY SLAUGHTER OF
THESE KANGAROOS STARTED TODAY. About 70 kangaroos were cruelly and
systematically murdered today, and this is likely to continue every
day this week until they have killed their quota of at least 400
    kangaroos.

What you can do to help - please write to, fax or call any or all of
the following Australian Federal Government politicians, and urge them

to order a stop to this inhumane slaughter now:

The Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd
    Tel: +61 (0)2 6277 7700
    Fax: +61 (0)2 6273 4100
    Queensland numbers:

    Fax: +61 (0)7 3899 5755
    Website: http://www.pm.gov.au/contact/index.cfm

The Minister for Defence, Joel Fitzgibbon
    Tel: +61 (0)2 6277 7800
    Fax: +61 (0)2 6273 4118
    Email: J.Fitzgibbon.MP@aph.gov.au

Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, Dr Michael Kelly AM
    Tel: +61 (0)2 6277 4840
    Fax: +61 (0)2 6277 8556
    Email: ParliamentarySecretaryDS@defence.gov.au

The Minister for the Environment, Peter Garrett
    Tel: +61 (0)2 6277 7640
    Fax: +61 (0)2 6273 6101
    Website: http://www.aph.gov.au/house/members/...ack.asp?id=HV4

These kangaroos did not have to die and have done nothing to deserve
this fate. They are trapped behind high fences and despite their
public statements, ultimately the local government has other plans for

    this land.

The option of conducting a scientific trial relocation was rejected by

the Department of Defence as being too expensive. However, the cost
quoted for the relocation effort was ridiculously over-inflated. Other

groups with experience in this field had offered to undertake the work

for less than a quarter of the cost. Ether way, the cost is a fraction

of the windfall the government will get when they ultimately sell off
    this land for future development.

and ways that you can get involved:

This was a very dark day in the history of the Australian Capital
Territory. Please help us put a stop to this unnecessary slaughter now.

I've started writing this three times now and just don't know what to say.
    Greed wins again I guess.
    I'll be sending emails.

Today's 'Australian' quotes professor Garnaut, Mr Rudd's chief climate change adviser, advising him that farmers should switch from beef and lamb to kangaroo, as roos give off negligible amounts of methane. He also suggests that there could be an increase in roo numbers from the 34 million today, to 240 million by 2020.

Of course the Kangaroo Industry Assn's president, Michael Mulligan, said that the 'national symbol' had become a more accepted every day meat.

I missed this information until now. Disgusting. I've emailed the Prime Minister using one of the links provided:

    http://www.pm.gov.au/contact/index.cfm

    Dear Mr Rudd,

Despite having missed, until now, all news of the mass kangaroo slaughter that took place on the former naval base in Canberra during May 2008, I still wanted to contact you to put in writing how appalled I feel at this event.

Photographs taken of the kangaroos in the days prior to the cull show them in apparent good health, with no signs of starvation, illness or any other legitimate reason for their destruction.

I gather the location was allegedly home to a rare species of grasshopper, a golden sun moth and a species of plant known as Ginninderra Peppercress, all endangered by the kangaroos. The cull contractors apparently took no precautions to preserve indigenous wildlife and left the site in a severely damaged state thanks to their vehicles. If these species truly existed there, this is disgraceful.

Translocating the kangeroos was accepted as an ethical, whole-ecology approach - best for the kangaroos and the indigenous wildlife - and moves were underway to arrange this, but this approach was forcibly scrapped by ACT Conservator Maxine Cooper.

This leads me to wonder whose interests were being served by the cull. The violent death of more than 500 animals is horrifying, and more so when the justifications for this appear weak and unsubstantiated.

I am no "bleeding heart" bunny hugger, and I cannot bear overly sentimental approaches towards animals and the environment. Tough decisions are sometimes necessary. But nothing I have seen, read or heard so far has convinced me that the decision to press ahead with this cull was necessary. Sentiment is one thing; compassion is something else altogether, and many decisions would be better made with a healthy dose of it.

    Yours sincerely

If our prime minister takes his chief climate change adviser's advice, and pushes for roo meat 'for the table' then imagine the millions who will be killed - just like the millions of lambs and pigs being killed now, to titillate the tastes of omnivores.
