    Default Cyprus

I'm going to Cyprus (protaras) in September 2009, I know its a while away but being new to veganism and haven't been abroad for ten years it's worrying me what I will eat, so I've decided to research now.

So if anyone can help, I'd be greatly appreciative.

I shouldn't worry, I bet it will be fine. My one experience of Cyprus was years ago as a lacto-vegetarian but I seem to remember that (the same as in Greece) you could get vegetable-based mezze type dishes. And of course if you're ever stuck it's easy to buy fruit, nuts etc in a shop and eat them on a beach or in your hotel room.

I hate olives and augbergine!! However, I LOVE hummous and falafel, also thanks for your link but Limmasol is quite away from Protarus. I'm lucky in that my mother is going out there this year so I'll ask her to keep an eye out for health food shops or vegan options in restaurants. And, I suppose most spring rolls, samosas and onion bajis are vegan, I can live on those for a week, no problem haha.

I believe those are more Arab dishes rather than traditional foods from Cyprus. -says the resident Arab

That's probably true, Tigerlily, and yet I'm fairly sure I had hummus a few times that time I went to Cyprus. I remember being pleasantly surprised about that because you can't so often get it in Greece.

I suspect there is a fair amount of cross-fertilisation between different cuisines around the Med.

    Hi pinkcharge,

i been living in Cyprus for over 14yrs, to be honest Cyprus is more of a meat based country, what's proberly best is before you go into a restaurant is to let them know you are vegan and ask what they can do for you,(they do get vegan mixed up with Vegetarian)
we have some lovely dips, like houmus, chickpea and tahini, which is sesame based, and wonderful fresh veg salads and so many bean and pulse dishes, most supermarkets to have a health section, with soya/almond milk and a few other bits and bobs.

hope this helps, if you need anything just let me know,

    Di

I went to Kalymnos (a very small Greek island) and stayed in self catering. I didn't have much problem getting vegan food - I had to do without some things like soya milk though.

I also took a large bag of nuts and rasins with me + some sosmix and istant mash. That did help - if there are any light foods that you really like then take some with you.

    You should be fine!
