    Default Jaggery Dosa

Is by far and away the best dessert I've ever had in an indian restuarant and amongst the best desserts I've had in any restuarant. Came with a scoop of vanilla swedish glace which complimented it very well indeed.

I've found various recipes online. Anyone make it and have their own tried/tested recipe to share? I'm pretty sure I've seen jaggery (palm sugar) in supermarkets. I plan to have a go this week sometime.

    Thumbs down Re: Jaggery Dosa

i bought some jaggery a bit ago intending to make some nutty type crunch stuff..but never got round to it. then i sliced off a bit of the jaggery and realised i hated it. so that was the end of any jaggery experimentation for me.

Yah, but it's a 'gredient... that's like eating a mouthful of flour and deciding never to eat cakes or bread again (heaven forfend!)...

    So it's made from palm?

    That's no good.

    Why?

If you're refering to deforestation, loss of natural habitat, potential extinction of animals etc then many crops can be associated with this - including soya. I see no more of a problem with sustainably produced palm products than any other sustainably produced vegetable product.

As an update - palm sugar is made from a different plant to palm oil and as far as I can tell it's production is not linked with deforestation.

Palm sugar is made from sago and coconut palm sap, harvested from living trees. Oil on the other hand is made from oil palms, which are quite different.
