I couldn't remember and had to look on my blood donor card - found out I'm O negative.
Wonder how long I'll remember it for this time!

Snap Marrers! I'm O negative too. Had to have those nasty Anti-D injections after each of my kids were born
Haven't given blood for quite a few years and this thread is making me think I should

I am O rh Negative, and for this reason I get letters in the post regularly to remind me to give blood (39 times and counting..).
If anyone here wants more info on giving blood (in the UK) then go to...
www.blood.co.uk
You will find all the info you need, as well as how to join the bone marrow register.
My doc refused too. It's ridiculous as I must have had about 20 blood tests in the last year alone, but whenever I ask if they can find out my blood group then say no. Surely it can't be that hard, if they're going to stick the needle in me anyway!
I want to know, as it's important in my partner's culture to know the blood group of a partner, something to do with it not being good if we have the same one. I think
Maybe I'll just have to go and give blood. I've always wanted to do it anyway, but have just been too scared. Well, I think I've finally got over my fear of needles... Although it's never really pleasant, it's for a good cause at least

I'm group B but the only way I could find out was when i was pregnant, they check then .
i found out when i donated to the blood bank. they tell you then. they also test your hemoglobin (iron) level then. so i started going regularly to keep my iron in check. but then i found there was a blood bank that paid for blood. so i'm going to them now. (i'm AB- so they want my plasma every month. but i dont give it to them that often 'cause i dont want track lines)
I too am O. Negative I believe.
O negative - there seems to be a lot of us with this blood group... I thought it was fairly rare..

O neg too!!! blimey - there are so many of us!!! I too give blood on a regular basis, and they always ring me if I forget - we are quite useful in an emergency us 'O negs'.
My youngest has a rare blood type and hes in great demand lol. - or they could be just vampires in disguise.

Found this site that explains all about blood typing and "who has what type" ratios, etc.

I'm glad someone posted this. I had an argument with my Fiancee's family about it. They used it in an argument against veganism. And seeing as we have all blood types among our ranks that certainly debunks that argument.
I'm AB+. We tested our blood types in science class when I was in high school.
AB+ also, I've been giving whole blood and platelets for about 5 years now... I forget how many gallons I'm up to now, but I never really liked that visual.
Good work Bunger I like to donate blood, but have never given platelets.
You know, I actually like giving platelets more than whole blood. The needle is smaller (I fear needles... and snakes!) and its really a very relaxing thing for me. I'm lucky enough to be able to donate a "tripple", which takes me about 2.5 hours each time, so I have plenty of time to just rest. =)
I might look into doing that this year. At the donor clinic a few months ago, I was talking to a man who donates platelets and he was saying he preferred doing that to giving blood too.
Does it have any side-effects for you?
They put an anticoagulant in the return stream (the pull and return are 1 needle thankfully!), which bonds with the calcium in your blood (or so I've been told) which can tend to make your finger tips and lips a little numb feeling at times. Though they should have Tums there for you, which I've found a few of those tends to ward off any tingling.
The only side effect I've noticed to be honest, is that if I find myself at a party the night after, I'm a bit of a cheap date.
Haha
Thanks for the advice!
I have no idea what blood type I have... hoping its O just so I can help someone out in the future! Although, everytime I've tried, I wasn't allowed to donate blood.
I've heard of plasma donation, and I'm assuming vegan plasma would be ideal. Has anyone done this?

For plasma donation there is a complete physical (at least in my area), but if you're willing, you can donate every 72 hours. The procedure is simular to platelet donation, and I believe that AB+ blood type is the universal plasma donor.
Yep, O neg is the universal whole blood. If they don't have time to type you in the ER, O- is what ya get, which is why it's important for them to have it in good supply. Thankfully it's a decently common blood type.
Type O Negative
i'm B positive, i love the sound of it
reasonably unusual so it seems
I'm O positive
A neg which is a rare one and apparently someone else in the family is supposed to have same type? That would be my nana then!
I had the AntiD jab when my son was born so my body wouldn't reject any future offspring as he was same type as his dad.
Used to give blood but can't now as on medication long term.
Lovin your avatar Earthsista!
I'm surprised at how many "Don't know"s there are. I'm another.
They won't let me give blood or plasma anyway as I had cancer (although that was about 20 years ago).
I'm AB+ and was interested in donating blood. I went and donated, then they started calling me to come donate plasma... I'm not great with needles though so I doubt I could stay conscious long enough to donate plasma. So I keep donating blood until I get used to it
Makes you feel really good about yourself after donating, so anyone who hasn't should try atleast once
I'm A rhesus negative. They 'forgot' to give me anti-D after my first pregnancy and my body killed the next pregnancy. Retards! I lost interest in having kids after that experience.

So sorry Hemlock.
I'm A+. Recently volunteered to donate platelets but was turned down as I don't have an overabundance of them.

0+ here as well - never liked eating meat and it's never agreed with me - was anemic until I became vegan - blood type diet really is a load of bo'locks.
Despite having zillions of blood test when younger, I didn't know until I started blood donation which blood group I was. I always get asked my weight, as I just make the 7st 12lbs ( which I use as an excuse to scoff loads of chocolate the day before) and I'm a slow bleeder with skinny veins, but I think it's worth doing and you do get free bourbons afterwards.
