    Default I'm moving to Glasgow!

    Hello everyone,

I'm moving to Glasgow in a couple of weeks, so I would firstly love to meet you lovely Glasvegans out there! Another thing though- I have neither a job nor a place to live (I'll be staying with relatives for a couple of weeks) So does anyone know of any jobs/flats at all? I'm in a bit of a pickle and any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks very much,

    xxx

Hi Rosa, Have you moved to glasgow yet? Do you like it? I stay just outside of glasgow, I used to stay in the city but moved out a few months ago. Have you found a job/flat? I have a room to rent out, but not in the city centre, its in Kilbirnie, it's 30 minutes by train from the city centre. What type of job are/were you looking for? Glasgow is quite good for vegans, have you been to Mono yet? it does the most amazing vegan cheese cake.

Havn't tried their crumble yet, will def try it next time i'm there. I made apple crumble a few weeks ago, with apples from a friends tree - its such comfort food, need to make more, it's so tasty and freezes so well. I really want to try and make vegan cheese cake as well, coz its so pricey in mono, need to find a recipe for it.

Haha. But, no it's really not! What do you think we live like up here?!

And the crime isnt as bad as everybody makes it out to be. It's probably just as bad as most other cities.

second that snowy white. I don't understand why glasgow has such a bad reputation. I love glasgow and miss living in the city. I find it quite insulting the attitude many have towards it, and I'm not even originally from glasgow.

Hehe. Seriously though, you really think we're that bad? We're not living in isolation or anything Glasgow's pretty big, but not too big: it's the perfect size and has everything we need. It's a haven for vegans!

The last city I lived in was Aberdeen and the crime and people there were much worse than Glasgow. Where were you originally from, Laura? As you can probably tell I'm very fond of Glasgow!

I was in the borders in a place near Hawick (did I spell that right?) I explained to the guy there about what I would and wouldn't have and checked the fryers. He surprisingly had two fryers one for chips and flour and water batter coated vegetable items and one for everything else, offered me a deep fried linda mccartney pie

    Hah, that's pretty cool actually.

Yes we are an unhealthy city, but most cities have their unhealthy sides. There are always chippies and fast food places. Maybe we're just more creative up here!

yeah that part does look rough,(sony adverts) but i think those flats have been knocked down, i think the city is improving now.
Snowywhite, i was born in england, but have travelled quite a lot because my dad was in the RAF. i lived in Ayr from ages 10 to 16, and have lived in and around glasgow for about 6 or 7 years now. My dad lives in Aberdeen, i've only been there once, it seems nice, but don't think I would want to live there. Do you study in glasgow Snowywhite? I'm studying psychology at Strathclyde.

I think it's because of the horrendous murder/assault rate and one of the lowest life expectancy's for males in any place in the world.

This was from an article in the Guardian a couple of years ago

the average life expectancy of a male (in the Calton area) is just 53.9 years. In Iraq, after 10 years of sanctions, a war and a continuing conflict, suicide bombs and insurgency, the average man has a good chance of making it into his 60s; the life expectancy of a male there is 67.49. In Iran it is 69.96, in North Korea, 71.37 and in the Gaza Strip it is 70.5.

Much as i love the place for it's vibrant feel and friendliness it's also one of the most violent places i've ever been, lol, the religious intolerance and bigotry are second to none and the weather's crap!!
Vegan wise it's pretty good though!
And it does boast a great tradition of Socialism, from the 'Red Clydesiders' to the men who went off to Spain in '36 (commemorated by a great statue of 'La Pasionaria' down by the river) right through to Tommy Sheridan and his modern day shenanigans, lol!

Mind you a lot of Glasgow is relatively crime- and violence-free isn't it? It may be a bit like Washington DC in that respect.

Must admit despite living in Glasgow for the first 18 years of my life I don't remember hearing of Calton (I do know where the Barras is though!).

the life expectancy aspect is rather worrying as it's about 25 years lower than England.
That truly is a tragic state of affairs.

The Guardian article seems to think the short life expectancy is mainly down to poor diet and substance abuse? Yes it is tragic whatever the reason, but that area is not typical of Glasgow, of course. http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/20...ealth.politics

The Barras is in Calton. The areas probably best know for spawning Glasgows most famous gang, 'The Calton Tongs' back in the day.
That's the Glasgow i know, i never think about the prosperous Western suburbs at all when i think of the city, just the city centre and the sprawling estates to the East.

Yes, that's why I mentioned it I assume the gang violence is a contributor to the low life expectancy in that area, though that point isn't much discussed in the article.

When I lived there I used to roam around quite a lot of the city, including places like the Gorbals. I suspect with some of those areas if you aren't in a gang they're not too dangerous. But I might just have been lucky.

I remember that vile stuff, back in Ireland as a kid that's what we used to drink when 'bushing' (going to random bushes, abandonded difficult to get to bits of parks, under bridges....)

Yeh I'm studying Classical Civilization at Glasgow Uni. I live in the city centre though, actually just round the corner from the Barras, on the corner of High St and Gallowgate. There are some interesting things to watch outside my window, but nothing terrible! Things you'd see in any city on a Saturday night!

Aberdeen's a terrible place to live. I got attacked and harassed there a lot more than I have ever been here! It's apparently the drug capital of Europe because of the harbour there. In my opinion, it's a way worse place than Glasgow violence-and-junkie wise.

There are always gonna be 'undesirables' in big cities, and yeh there's a drink and drug problem, but that's common to Scotland, and Glasgow's by no means a terrible city to live in. Everybody's more friendly that anywhere else I've been, and I find there's a more tolerant attitude here. There will always be those bunch of people who discriminate, and it's mostly fueled by the footie teams!

There's bad areas in every large city, and certainly places where you wouldnt go on your own or at night, but this is by no means the whole of Glasgow!! So I dont know why everybody thinks that's all Glasgow's about...

Hey people! I'm here now...sitting in the library as I have no computer at home! Managed to find a flat, just off woodlands road, and a job too (although I'm still looking for another one-the hours and pay at my present one are fairly terrible...)

Maybe we should all meet up in Mono at some point and stuff ourselves with cheesecake?! (and Laura, I can give you a brilliant recipe for chocolate cheesecake) Just to let people know I have my own vegan cake business which I'm having to get contacts and clients for up here so if any of you have birthdays/ special occasions coming up just PM me and I'll send you a menu (of sorts!)

    Hi Rosa,
Thats great that you've found a flat and job. It great around woodlands, lived there for a while. I still go up to the beanscene there regular as i find it so easy to study there, such a relaxed atmosphere, and the blueberry muffin (which i only found out recently is vegan) is great.
That sounds like a great idea to meet up and eat loads of cheese cake and coffee! I love the sound of chocolate cheese cake, you'll def need to give me the recipe for that. I made a cheese cake of sorts, but it was too tempting to leave to set in fridge (not sure if it would have set anyway). I used that vegan cream cheese stuff out of holland and barrets and lemon and sugar, digestive biscuits, then put hot raspberries sauce over it, it was extrememly tasty.
It's so good to know theres a vegan cake business in glasgow and will keep you in mind if I ever need a cake.

That does sound like a good idea - a Glasgow vegans meet-up!
Woodlands Road's a good place to live - buzzing with student-life, you liking it so far?

The cake business sounds amazing! It's my 21st in February so maybe this year I'll get my first proper birthday cake since turning vegan! I'll have to do some major obvious hinting to my loved ones though haha!

    Hey!
This seems as good a thread as any to start posting again on so...welcome to Glasgow Rosa-I moved over about 2 months ago myself...you'll love it.

ha-you're probably about 30 seconds from me-I'm just at the bottom of Great Western Road! OK Now i'm gonna be paranoid when walking about.

Anyway, as said, for food Mono's good although I've fallen in love with the menu at Stereo http://www.rottenrow.co.uk/stereo/

something of a relief although I will be far too self aware now when I'm down your direction. Glad you're having a good time thus far though despite the atrocious weather and freezing cold!

As far as any meet ups go then I'm free most times barring Tues and Weds when I'm knee deep in HTML coding so whenever's good for other folk.

Also-Sith? duly noted...not been down that way further than Byres Rd in a while but shall venture forth sometime soon to check it out.

Oh and doing anything's overrated. I fully intend to vegetate in front of my Xbox for the remainder of the day while drinking copious amounts of coffee

I feel the same Laura - it's been non stop work for the past few weeks. I'm finishing off my last bit of coursework today though

The 78's really nice. It's just off Argyle Street (near some student halls) fairly close to the Kelvingrove Museum. You could try Google-mapping it??

Stereo's great too, but Mono is probably my all-time favourite!

Rosa that's totally understandable too. I'm part of the Vegan Society of Glasgow Uni and every year more people join and the main thing they like about us is the fact they can talk to like-minded people. A lot of them have never met another vegan and that's partly what the society's about - to let vegans meet other vegans so they dont feel so alone, it's particularly important for people who've just moved here. So, what you're feeling is totally common

From next week onwards I'll be free loads too. Most days are fine with me, though later on Mondays and Thursday's I'll have classes.

Well should we say 7pm on Friday 12th in Mono? I'll try to get round to making some cupcakes or brownies...(We might have to eat them sneakily!)

Btw, just to let you know my name is really Amy (Rosa is my middle name) just in case you start shouting Rosa and I don't notice!

Hey, would any of you folks mind if I came along as well? I actually live in central Scotland, not in Glasgow, but it's only a 50 minutes train journey away and there's not much of a vegan scene where I live and I'd like to be able to meet other vegans around my own age. I finish work on the 12th at 5pm so it shouldn't be much of a problem getting there at about 7ish, provided I know where people will be.

    Yeah come along, I wouldn't mind - everyone's invited.
But that's a good point, how will we know where everyone will be? Anyone any ideas?

We might want to pm each other our mobile phone numbers, so we can contact each other if there's any confusion on Friday evening itself?
