    Default Recycled sidewalks

I'm not sure if someone's posted this, but I was watching the news at lunch and it said Cali was using old tires to make sidewalks. The sidewalks give a little so it's easier on joints and stuff when people are walking, it allows tree branches to grow under it without breaking the sidewalk, and obviously it's recycling tires. I was excited when I heard about it, but I'm not sure about the environmental impact on having walkways made of rubber. Anybody know about this?

Nike does this for rubber soled shoes too. Vist here to see how and where to drop off your worn shoes.

It seems lovely to me. And I looked on the website and it says that when the squares have become old and are unusable anymore, the company picks them up and recycles them again.

It must be like that springy stuff you get under kid's swings in some parks. That's so sweet. I guess they've thought through about it getting gummy in the heat (mind you, ordinary pavements get gummy in LA with the heat) - and hopefully it's not going to ruin anyone's lovely high-heeled shoes?

An enquiry for a new start up company that does the same thing here in the UK came across my desk a few months ago. It's a very cool idea.

Yep, rubber pavements in Scotland would cut the A & E admissions at the weekend in half at least!
And maybe the ground floor walls of all buildings to have a rubber coating too, so everyone could just bounce home from the pub!

My only concerns with this are how long do they last? how hard wearing are they? even if they get re-recycled, is the energy taken to lift, reprocess and relay them, viable both economically and environmentallly?

It is amazing what they can do, in terms of recycling, i think civil engineering has been quite innovative. Only, yesterday i was reading an article where they are using 'bundles' of tyres to provide drainage layers in landfill sites (as apposed to large aggregate).

heres a couple of others that maybe of interest -

Iceland - they have trialled using plastics (old pc & tv casings) under roads to try and reduce the effect of frost.

US&UK - using a percentage of glass in bituminous road materials (tarmac) to replace aggregate.

France & UK - using paper fibres (from recycled paper) as a bitumen carrier in road surfacings

UK - shredding pastics to create loft insulation.

I guess the industry has had to clean up its act as a whole, i think about 70% of waste in the UK is(was) generated by the construction industry. I know now very little leaves site as 'waste' and many of the waste skips go to transfer stations to be sorted further before going to landfill. There are loads of industry initiatives, if anyones interested, i can bore you for hours

or better yet put the tyres around the drunks thus saving all of the processing energy and on the plus side the extra weight will give them exercise
