Default Venice - hotel recommendations please

I am planning a surprise trip to Venice for my husband and I (neither of us have been before).

Does anybody have a small hotel to recommend please? Around 120-140 Euro a night maximum.

    Thanks

Have you tried Expedia (www.expedia.com)? It also has a site in French

I use it to book flights and hotels when I travel and the prices are normally very competitive, you can also read other peoples' views on the accommodation.

    Enjoy Venice!

I think we stayed in this one last time, Hotel Panada:

It was pretty nice, especially the bar with all the old mirrors. It was in 2005 I think so can't tell if standards have been maintained. Think we booked it as part of some sort of all-in deal, possibly via Expedia.

How about a vacation rental? Sometimes they can be even more charming that a botique hotel Many of these places have nightly rates, with a minimum stay of one night:

This is a sister site, of a site that I used to find my recent San Francisco vacation rental.

ok, the one i was thinking of was the arlecchino, which we didn't end up staying at.

    we stayed here: http://www.casaformosa.com/en/index.htm

it was a lovely little place, which those insanely over-decorated venitian rooms. breakfast was simple, but included and the breakfast room was sunk down, so you were at waterlevel by the window, very nice. super central (very near st mark's square).

they also have a sister hotel which is slightly nicer, and just around the corner, which we stayed in the first night because they had double-booked us

I stayed at a place called Al Soar for E80 a night. It was good because you got a little "flat" with a kitchenette. There was also another kitchen in the building which was well stocked with coffee, juice & bread.... and you could just help yourself..
