    Default having a baby

hey guys i havnt been on here as much as i used to becuase i was working but now im home im getting back on the net so hello again.

im no longer working as im 16 going on 17 weeks pregnant, last visit my bloods are fine so my doctor was happy. next ultra sound is the 19 20 week one so this ultra sound will look like a baby we are both excited about it and have decided not to find out the sex until its born.

i plan to breast feed but im always wondering if there are any vegan friendly formulas, i wont to avoid useing them as much as i can but it would be handy to no.

i have also found out that some baby wipes have animal fats in them and thats something i would never have thought of is there anything else i should be careful of?

Glad to know it's all going well

There's one formula that's vegan in the UK (it tastes bloody disgusting, but maybe they all do? ). I wouldn't know about Australia though.

I have no idea if we have a vegan pregnancy thread on here, but if not maybe you could start one? Sounds like something that would be useful!

    Congratulations, Sarah!

A non-vegan friend was unable to breast feed after about a month or so and she put her son on cows milk formula, he had an allergic reaction to it. I think she then used soy formula which he also reacted to. She then saw a Dr/Naturopath and he was put on a low allergen formula based on rice. I think this was much better for him but it's presription only, from memory.

I just did a search to see if anything came up, I found something called Neocate, it's cow's milk free but doesn't seem to list the ingredients online so it might not be vegan.

Also Heinz Nurture Soya from the UK, not sure if you'd be able to find it here.

And here's the Australian Vegan Parenting Group. You could also contact VNV and see if they know of any formulas avail. here and contact the doctors on their veggie friendly doctors list.

    Congratulations Sarah.

Re formulas, wipes and so on, maybe you could try asking the Vegan Society of Australia if you haven't already? Don't know how active they are but there is an e-mail address on their website http://www.veganaustralia.net/

It's a long story... the short(ish) version is I was on another board and a mum-to-be was worried that if anything went wrong with the birth and she wasn't able to breastfeed straight away because she was on medication or some other reason that she should have a vegan formula in place, and she couldn't find any in the US, so I offered to send her some. I bought 2 tubs so she'd have peace of mind for a few weeks (as 1 tub doesn't last for a huge length of time) but the postage was outrageous!

I sent one tub by airmail to guarantee it got there before the birth and offered to send the other by surface mail but she told me not to bother, then I tried to take it back but Boots refused, apparently they will not take returns on baby milk (in case someone's tampered with it? and they also wouldn't have given be points on a Boots card if I had one because they "don't want to encourage people to use formula". This was said to me in an extremely snotty tone of voice, as well.)

So I was lumbered with a tub of the stuff, and thought I may as well try it out in cooking since it's full of vitamins and whatnot. I just couldn't stomach it although I tried it several ways (coffee, smoothies... possibly soup? Can't remember all of them), and ended up chucking it eventually.

    Neocate ingredients list here: http://www.neocate.co.uk/aaa_neocate...gredients.html

Has D3 so not vegan, and other ingredients could be from animal sources.

I personally never bothered importing vegan formula to have just in case. Just go into breastfeeding with a positive attitude that you will succeed, get the numbers of a few IBCLCs (lactations consultants) to have on hand, talk to other breastfeeding mothers, and if all else fails you can probably obtain donor breastmilk in an emergency that would be much healthier than using formula.
If you are planning to give birth at a hospital, definitely notify the staff that you do not want the baby given any formula for any reason. Even if there is a problem with blood sugar, sugar water can be given instead. And visit sites like Kellymom for good breastfeeding info. Don't let medical staff alarm you if your milk doesn't come in right away--it is normal for it to take 3-5 days at least, and babies are normally just fine on colostrum until then.

You might look in to using cloth wipes (and cloth diapers for that matter). I just keep a tub of them wet with only water and they work better than the disposable wipes that I keep in the car (which are Tushies brand).

Never be ashamed of using formula! My mother is a midwife - and she has vegans and meateaters ashamed that they might not provide adequate breast milk and feel a failure. Formula is there for a reason and its not laziness!

Best of luck with the pregnancy.. I'm a student paramedic and I've delivered two now - reduced me to tears!!

    Congratulations!!

My parents are lacto-ovo and my mom was vegetarian throughout her pregnancy... At the time vegetarianism was less common and still seen as pretty 'weird,' and my uncle told his children that because my mom was veggie, I would be born without arms or legs! (Now two of his children are vegetarian themselves! )

Congrats its great you're breastfeeding, but don't be put off by some peoples comments as they are just ignorant. I breastfed my son for 3 years and although their were some negative comments I had a lot of support aswell. I found the first few months of breastfeeding the most difficult, but it gets easier after that.
Did you know the WHO reccomend that all babies should be breastfed for a minimum of 2 years Well done for using cloth nappies aswell

Neocate is an elemental formula. It isn't vegan. Actually it isn't even vegetarian. It's made by chemically breaking down the proteins in meat into amino acids. It's a method of last resort for babies with severe allergies.

Formula is rarely necessary!!! I advise new mothers not to keep it in the house. Too tempting to lose confidence during growth spurts and use some & then that can compromise the breastfeeding. It's not like it's hard to find if a real emergency comes up.

Glad to hear things are going well, that is awesome!!! Huge congrats. I nursed my DD until she was 2 (she self-weaned while I was preggo) and my DS is 8 months old and only just starting to show an interest in solid foods. He's huge too so people don't give me a hard time about that!

My little nephew is or was on Neocate as when he was born 13 weeks early he had to have part of his gut removed as it was dying and they are introducing stuff gradually. He is nearly 2 now but still can;t have dairy or soya. He has just started on wheat.

Charlotte is absolutely goreous Sarah. She looks so happy.

yeah the whole formula thing im not quite sure about id rather breast feed seems the better choice if you can do it, i remember reading the ingredients on formula for lactose intolerant babies and there is so many ingredients in formulas its quite scary.

and thank you everyone she is usually a happy baby though she does have her moments like today i think the weather makes her crazy at times the way it keeps changing

Ditto that. We never even considered having it "just in case". Besides, there are always donor mamas with an extra stash who would be willing to help.

    i love your blog
ive just started one myself its plain at the moment.
but i will be following your for great veg ideas for when charlotte starts solids
what age did you start your little one
ive herd 6 months is the best age to start little bits of the rice cereal and stuff.
im still breastfeeding and plan to for as long as i can, but im wondering when i can safely introduce boiled water for hot days, i no water cant do alot of harm but ive herd lots of different stories so im just curious when others started solids and water while breastfeeding.
i also wanted to ask if anyone here ever expressed as i have the pump but never no when its a good time to actually do it
sorry for the list of questions

We usually start solids around 6 months, offering little bites of what we're eating. Smushy baby cereals are not necessary and not very nutritious anyways. My boys were eating a ton by 8-9 months, my girl couldn't have cared less until at least 9 months, and didn't start eating a sizeable amount until a year old.

Water I give in a cup sometime between 6-9 months old just to introduce them to drinking from a cup. I also offer rice milk. But they don't start drinking much at all in my experience until some time after age 1 at least, if you are still breastfeeding on demand. They get all the liquid they need from breastmilk.

I pumped for 3 of my 4 babies (one would never take a bottle, and I had not started donating milk yet). I pumped during work for my first. But once I stopped working I stopped. The best time to put a little aside is first thing in the morning--you always have more milk in the morning after sleeping at night (even with a baby who nursing several times during the night). When donating I'd feed the baby on one side upon waking, then pump the other side after getting the other kids breakfast. But you can certainly pump a couple more times per day for whatever reason.
