Does anyone know of anywhere good to buy something to eat at Paddington Station? would just need to be a snack to eat on the train.
There isn't really anything around Paddington Station, I'm afraid. There's a Holland & Barrett at the Hyde Park end of Queensway (in the Bayswater area), but I think 20 minutes would be pushing it, I'm afraid. You'd be better off just packing something.
You'll probably be able to find some dried fruit and nuts and flapjack type things in the newsagents and Asian Supermarkets on Praed Street. If I have a little while to wait for a train I pop out of Paddington and stock up on Gram Flour and beans and stuff.
Blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer "extortion". The "X" makes it sound cool.
Just been down to London for the first time in a year or so and noticed a nice little veggie food/smoothie place directly across from Kings Cross station.
All the vegan stuff is labled!
Done me nice for the train!
I went to rootmaster! and it was amazing, sadly I was very drunk by that point, but I do remember that the food was absolutely delicious and I can't wait to go back!
Eh, you'll need to fill me in on that one????? Good?? Type of food???
Alara is an independent health food shop at 55 Marchmont Street. They have a great selection of veggie and vegan hot foods and salads, mostly sold by weight. It's self service - you load up your plate and it gets weighed at the till. They also have some cakes (and other fixed price things like home made burgers I think).
There's a reasonable choice of the usual wrapped snacks in the chiller cabinet too.

Has anyone ever been to/ heard of Bake-A-Boo? http://www.bake-a-boo.com/
I've just come across their website and it seems that they offer vegan cakes- not specifically labelled, but dairy&egg free. Though looking at their twitter feed, they do use egg in some cakes.
How exciting!

OMG! - I'm very excited about this too! I love afternoon tea with pretty tea cups and it's just not the same without cake! This place looks so cute. How did you hear about it?

Sorry for the shrill tone of my previous post - I sound like an Edwardian spinster!
I was mooching down Lower Marsh (behind Waterloo) whilst at work and found a veggie/ vegan food stall on the mini market there. The woman said she is there on Tues - Fri and does vegan lasagna, salads and other hot sloppy foods that are soooooooooo hard to find in any other convenience place.
I shall endeavor to try some soon and report back. Has anyone else been there?

That's pretty much how excited I was when I came across it!!!
Don't apologise for cake excitement, it's the best kind of excitment.
I was googling vegan cake places in london and it came up through a link from another cake shop. Next week I am hunting this place down, and reporting back!!

Have you been there yet Troutina?
By the way, in case anyone was planning to check out the branch of RaW which opened by Liverpool Street in April, it now appears to have closed down. It closed when the whole area had a two day power cut about a month ago and I haven't seen it open since (I walk past morning and afternoon). There's no notice in the window and all the equipment/ furniture/ signs are still there (even 2 bottles of agave syrup sitting in the window annoying me - I could have had them!)
It wasn't ever very busy but I would have thought they'd give it a longer try than that...
Has anyone been to Chutneys in Drummond St lately, and what did you think, please? (I have had a search of the forum and can't find any reports but that might be me )
I might need to meet someone up there and I wasn't too impressed with my last visit to Ravi Shankar (they served a vegan with something non-vegan despite having been asked whether it was vegan). I have also been reading discouraging things about Diwana which is a shame as both of those used to be reliable. But the reports of Chutneys on HappyCow look promising.
I've been to several restaurants on Drummond Street and I think Chutney's was my favourite. But I found that will all the restaurant on Drummond Street I needed to be continually check that things were vegan, otherwise they'd forget and bring my vegan meal with a non-vegan chutney.
Yes, you do have to watch out for the side bits and pieces, probably because of miscommunications in the kitchen, but it helps when the waiters at least show signs of knowing what "vegan" means! I have found the various branches of Sagar to be quite good in that respect.
Thanks for mentioning Greens and Beans, Alison - I have been past and wondered what it was like. I would certainly like to try it although I think my friend may be set on an Indian meal so possibly not this time.
I went there with my omnivorous friend the other night and I thought it was very good indeed so thanks for the encouragement to try it.
The waiters were very welcoming (unlike some other restaurants not a million miles from there) and were clued up about what was vegan. I had the none-too-adventurous combination of bhel poori and masala dhosa - they did me extra sambar with the dhosa instead of the non-vegan chutney. The food was above average (not too salt for once I thought). Fresh coconut milk/water was on offer as a drink (served in the coconut). Service was prompt but we weren't rushed.
My friend hadn't been to a S. Indian place before and liked it very much too.
I think it came to around £30 for the two of us including two starters, two main courses, one pudding, one tea and a couple of drinks.
I think we should go! (But maybe we can ask for a vegan high fat version!)

Oh definately the high fat version!
Have since found a recent (June 09) review on another forum which isn't encouraging:
[Quote] Well, it was a bit pants tbh. We were booked in for tea in "the drawing room" at 2pm. We actually ended up packed into a corner of the fairly unattractive subterranean restaurant with the four or five other pairs who had also booked afternoon tea. At 2.45 we finally got pots of tea but still no food. I think we finally got the food at 3pm by which time we were just about chewing our arm off. We asked if the milk in the jug was soya milk - the waitress looked suprised and said that, no, it was normal milk. We asked for soya (we'd booked a vegan tea ffs) and that took about another ten minutes to arrive. The food, when it finally arrived, wasn't great. Actually the sandwiches were quite nice but there were nowhere near enough of them bearing in mind we were starving at this point. The stale scones came with foil-wrapped pats of butter and, next to us, vegans were being given cheesecake by hotel staff who didn't understand why that wasn't going to work. The cakes weren't that great either.
It's a shame because I really wanted it to be good [End Quote]
However, I still think if a few of us are game if might be worth a shot - I guess the more interest they get the more they'll learn and the more inclined they'll be to correct their mistakes... And around 17 pounds is actually comparatively cheap...
Well if it is crap I don't think we'll be sitting there meekly for an hour waiting - or paying! And if we book the drawing room we had better be in the drawing room or we won't stay! We can always go somewhere else to get cake if they let us down!
I'd still be interested in giving it a go but I think I ought to pop in beforehand and see if they can convince me that they can do better!
Wasn't there an afternoon tea thread? Ah yes, here it is. I'll post some info over there and see who is interested in doing this.
