Sniv, but what do you think of the specific Alicia Silverstone commercial I linked to? Art? Pornography? Other? Effective? Ineffective?
I don't really know if that kind of strategy is effective or not. Frankly, its not my concern since I'm not involved in anything related to this. I certainly wouldn't call it. Porn. It was beautiful. She's a beautiful woman. It's a bit on the shallow side, just on the fact the whole getting out of the pool things is so cliche. I don't have a problem with it, though. It's hardly gratuitous, as per the usually girls with jumbo jugs blatantly bending over for the pleasure of men.

I liked it because the commercial was about HER, and HER life as a vegetarian. It was about a person as a whole, not an object. She has the personality to round out any spot.

However, you should probably ask the less-biased opinion of someone who is not attracted to her.

I'm also wondering how many people who are against Peta's "objectification" of women also make it a point to boycott porn.

Interesting question although the two are not that closely related imo since PeTA is a publicly campaigning organisation and as such may reinforce perceived stereotypes whereas pornography's (whatever it is..) use by private individuals does not have the same possibility.
Fwiw I'm not into porn. It doesn't really do it for me. I like real women and the feelings that they generate.

I wonder if Gandhi or Martin Luther King ever dressed up in cartoon animal costumes or ran around with their junk hanging out?

    ----

Although embarrassing to us conceptually, I can't really say I have any evidence that these antics don't work, everyone seems to agree "sex sells", and I do have evidence that PeTA's accomplished a lot in their 25 or so years.

Fiamma and I both admit that our conversion to veganism came about partly due to information that was provided to us by PeTA, so there are at least two important things right there! HA!

FYI: Since this thread both seems to try to cover every possible aspect of pro/con Peta arguments, is partially running in circles, and clearly contains more conclusions than explanations about why people came to the conclusions they came to, the thread will probably be closed soon.

I applaud and support them always..

This thread has been closed now, for a few reasons basically:

    1) Lack of communication. Example: The part discussing Peta's use of nudity. Lots of people who are against Peta's use of nudity don't find nudity 'shocking' or have a problem with nudity as such, but disagree that it's a good way for a large organization to promote their viewpoints. The problem isn't that women shouldn't be 'allowed' to do what they want with their bodies, but if it's a good idea to do it, and if getting attention always means that more people will take your opinions seriously. Some so called celebrities have gotten a lot of attention for nudity, sex videos or drug/alcohol addiction, but that doesn't help them as people or as artists... and I've noticed that questions about whether eg. Obama or Martin Luther King would have gotten more support if they were doing the same nude speech trick that Peta sometimes organizes aren't replied. When people don't respond to counter-arguments, discussion sometimes ends and becomes propaganda instead.

    2) Unfruitful communcation. I just removed a post containing this phrase "why the fuck you are opposed to NOT SELLING HAMBURGERS. I don't understand" and "please explain, what are you opposed to?? Please don't say "the objectification of women", that makes us laugh while you download porn, everyday on your computer, if you are so interested in the way women are perceived in society, then stop objectifying them.". This was a reply to a member who have never written about 'downloading porn every day', and not being 'opposed to not selling hamburgers'.

One could probably be a porn actor or own a porn production company and be opposed to using nudity as a political/ideological 'weapon'... but please continue the discussion about nudity/naked protests here: Do PETA's naked protest tactics help animals?... and start other threads about Peta if you want to.
