    Thumbs up Hot Cross Buns

    Hi all,

Think I may have found some vegan hot cross buns in tesco. Did a quick search and couldn't see them posted anywhere else.

Here's the link, they look vegan to me. Has anyone else seen these? They're on offer, 2 packs for £1.50.

No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.

    I've seen them

They contain E471 and E472e, but are labelled vegetarian.

So, it depends whether you trust Tesco to have checked the source of the glycerin as being vegetable not animal before labelling it vegetarian.

There's also a chance that the fruit peel contains shellac. A few years ago sainsburys explicitily stated their hotxbuns weren't vegan due to this.

Was in Sainsbury's yesterday and noticed that their White Hot Cross Buns have a little vegan V on them. Got quite excited, and will be buying some this weekend.

Could be because they're fundamentally made of cr@p? Fortunately Easter comes but once a year (though it does seem to go on rather a long time in supermarkets )

    Ahhhhhhhhhhh!
When I got to Sainsbury's tonight, I discovered that new labels had been stuck on the hot cross buns saying that they are now 'Not suitable for Milk or Egg Allergy Sufferers'.
Am absolutely gutted, and very frustrated.
So have resorted to making my own, and breadmaker is on the case. Will be ready at about 11.30 tonight, but I don't care. Just hope they taste ok.
Need to turn this - - into this -

Yes I noticed that too. Even my (non-vegan) OH was amazed that they can be labelled suitable for vegans when they've also got such a strong allergy warning - the risk of cross contamination is obviously very high, rather than just a slight risk.

I left them behind too but I'm too lazy to make my own!!

You could always call them Democracy Buns, and say they have a nice X on the top to remind people to vote in local elections?

Time for a bit of pedantry. We normally think of the Christian cross having the shape + (sorry but I can't elongate the lower part) not an X aka saltire, so the seasonal food would be a 'hot + bun' not a 'hot X bun'. (Perhaps in Scotland people could be allowed to advertise it as the latter since the patron saint, St Andrew was crucified on a saltire cross -allegedly).

(As you can see, I've too much time on my hands awaiting a film on tv -sorry)

Has the team found any commercial hot cross buns that are vegan this year? I've only got as far as checking in the Co-op and theirs didn't seem to be (though larger branches than ours may have more kinds).

Waitrose 'Essential' hot cross buns are vegan, according to their web site. £1.19 for 6, or £1.05 if you order through Ocado instead.

I've tried the M&S classic ones now and very fine they were too, thanks Sluggie. Have also got some of the mini ones in the freezer. Not sure if I'm going to make it to Waitrose before Easter although these days that doesn't necessarily mean I won't be able to get them does it?

Our local Iceland turned into a TkMaxx a while ago so I probably won't get a chance to try those ones unfortunately VeganGran, pleased to hear they may have them though

    They're £1.19 for 6.

That's the only one from the 6 versions Waitrose sells that is vegan, though!!

Massively overpriced... I mean, for £1.19 you should have 238. According to the rhyme anyway.

KayJay, I just find it depressing the way Easter joins on to Christmas these days. As previously discussed I think, they should rebrand the buns and then we could eat them all the year round without feeling queasy (calories apart). How about calling them "Vote 'yes' in the referendum" buns (although I reserve the right to vote "no")

Is that the only difference between hotx buns and teacakes....the cross? Strange but I've never fancied teacakes.

I think hot cross buns have more fruit & spices in, and a glaze on top.
Tesco's also seem Vegan and they even have a dark chocolate and orange one (I would check the new Vegan list though to make sure).
Marks and Spencer have listed their standard hot cross buns on their Vegan List
