Default What laws should our government pass?

It would be nice if we lived in a country where it was illegal to use animals for food, clothing, testing, etc. but we all know we're a long way from that. Now that we have a democratic administration in office, our voices are more likely to be heard. What do you think are reasonable laws that the government could pass?

I think the first thing we should do is raise the taxes on meat and dairy products, and end the subsidies. Most politicians are apathetic to the suffering of animals, but they cannot ignore climate change, and the strain on our natural resources. In turn the price of meat and dairy would go up, restaraunt menues would change, and consumers would have more incentive to purchase plant-based dishes.

If they aren't going to take meat out of production, they definitely need to change the standards for meat production. We live in a world where people are put in jail for not feeding their dogs yet animals the very same jailers eat were persecuted beyond imagine. This defies all logic.
I would also like to see proper labeling of GMO's and other things. I have a sense that if the general public knew what they were eating, they would stop. I would like to see high fructose corn syrup banned as well. I believe it's contributing highly to the obesity epidemic and type two diabetes in children.

    Implementation of the following http://www.animalaid.org.uk/h/n/CAMP...techarter/ALL/

Abolition of private property over a certain amount (don't ask what as can't be arsed working it out).

Ban all use of animals for entertainment or as means of production or animal control, an amendment for beautification/ land control would be added.

Each new construction project to include enough wind turbines to supply at least 75% of all the buildings electrical needs.

Limit each household to one car, two for 'essential' workers.

Maximum amount allowed to be paid in wages and bonuses according to regional average, wages to be paid via a Central government owned national savings bank.

Central government to take over control of a large supermarket chain then government workers can shop at a level where little profit is made (this profit would be used to fund local schemes that shop users would vote on what to do). The shop would include cafés and social centres

Make each town like Letchworth UK and allow the local residents to vote on representatives who can serve for 4 years only.

Members of Parliament to be allowed a maximum of two terms of 4 years in Parliament. Pay should be set at double their wages before they entered Parliament.

Those with jobs that are 'not desirable' would receive a full pension at the age of 45.

Those wishing to be clergy can do so outside of their own work if their wages are funded by the parishioners.

Means of production to be kept in regional areas and not outsourced to another region or country without specific reasons to be approved by government.

Import tax to be set at 20% of shop floor sale price. UK produced goods to have a 2.5% sales tax. This would also be the level on goods not able to be made in the UK or on pre-approved items.

Export items to other nations must not be sold cheaper than items produced in the country being exported to.

Children being a major qualifying part of a housing application.

This is just a tiny bit of what I think. As you can tell I am a little socialist.

1st: abolish the state protection of corporations
2nd: workers are given the right to take over their factories
    3rd: abolish compulsory prisons

I'm sure that I'd go about things in a more thoughtful manner, and I'm sure that I'd put some other steps first, but I'd sure want to get to 1, 2 & 3.
    context is everything

Both parties depend on contributions from the animal production industry. Many states depend heavily on agriculture and related subsidies. These states will never elect someone who opposes those subsidies which translate into their livelihood. Take Iowa for instance. A state that produces a lot of grains for animal production and has a large animal production industry as well. No politician in their right mind who represents one of these states would even think about imposing such laws. These politicians care much more about re-election than animal welfare.
There are many laws that could be passed but won't and most likely never will. The United States is a meat and dairy country. That is very unlikely to change. I think it's also a mistake to believe that government really changes anything or is a force for good.

There are so many I could name, but none of them would ever get passed because the general public eats meat and is oblivious to the torture that got them the food on their dinner plates.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think that the government is just a business focused on making money. It's really disheartening to know that the almighty dollar wins out over the welfare of the country in the long term.

Since only a small part of the population are vegans, a democratic (including a government dominated by Democrats) would not listen much to a small percentage with opinions that differ from what most people think. What they IMO still could (and should) do is to provide balanced information about the health/environmental/animal cruelty aspects of using animal products, especially in all levels of education.

If they do that for a few decades, the general view on using meat and other animal products will change.

Well, I think that one of the major untalked of scandals is the amount of animals that get killed trying to cross our roads.

I would like a law that makes it compulsory for all pedestrian crossings to have an extra set of buttons placed low enough for the little critters to be able to reach them.

A law that says anyone seeking public office must first take vows of poverty and chastity for life would be nice.

Random slaughter law; Something along the lines of every tenth animal sent to slaughter has to be a randomly picked person caught buying meat in a restaurant or supermarket.

No hunting allowed of any animals who do not own a gun with which to defend themselves and free thermal underwear for penguins.
All done in the best possible taste ...

Having got that out of my system ..

The most devastating single law I can think of would be one that leaves people open to prosecution if they fail to observe the buddhist criteria for truthfullness.

Sufficient to say, without going into the full spiel of what that is, it would totally cripple the meat and advertising industries and render politics, as politics now are, totaly impossible.

This really bothered me for some reason. We don't need any more slaughtering of any kind of animals. Humans included.

The banning of cockfights (these fights are only illegal in the capital but they are annually practiced in two of the most important festivals of the country, with pride! D:<)
The banning of bullfights at least for the capital (I am being so optimistic since bullfighting is big here, but if Catalonia can do it then so can we)
Labeling GMO and vegan products (our current president just authorized the usage of GMOs for corn fields so this is a new problem which nobody knows about, also we don't have a vegan symbol or stamp for products)
The prohibition of animal usage by circuses.
Start a campaign for pet neutering.
The prohibition of animal street vendors (there are street vendors for everything, from puppies to snakes)
The prohibition of wild animal selling (it's not funny how everybody knows where to get a tiger, vendors sell wild animals in the biggest market of the city and you can legally have them in your backyard until they reach a year)
    The prohibition of hunting.
Add a nutrition class in every public and private school that lasts at least 80hours.
Vegan options in every school cafeteria. (or vegetarian at least)

I would be so happy if these laws were to pass
