    Default Allergies and Ear Pain

I have had allergies (I won't even name them all because they're so many that the doctor told me only the basic ones) since I was about 12...

    grass
    olive trees
    cat hair
    dog hair
    pollen
    dust
    etc

Well anyway, for the past week they've just been REALLY bad..I'm talking about waking up every single freakin day around 1am - 3am and staying up sometimes even until I have to go to school! I have basically been a zombie this whole time and I blow my nose so much that I've gone through one whole toilet paper roll a day...

    Yes..it's that bad.

Well, now after so many nose blows, my ears hurt SO bad, especially my right one. I can't go to the doctor because I'm 17 and I need my stupid mother to go with me and she refuses since she says that doctors are useless..and they kind of are. I've been to them at least four times in the past year and they've given me different allergy medicines (like flonase and extra strength claritin) and it's seriously like I'm drinking a placebo that doesn't even make me feel better, and shooting water up my nose...

IS THERE ANYTHING OUT THERE STRONGER?! Claritin doesn't work for me, neither does flonase.

I already have a netty pot and it's useless because when I'm having the allergies the water doesn't go through (it's blocked), and when I don't have the allergies...well, I tried it for a while and it still didn't do anything for when I did it.

I am so tired of having this problem..it's been a burden to me for years and I don't want to keep having it... I'm going to Korea next month and I don't want to importune my host family with my stupid problems! or be a zombie during the activities! and I'm going to college in a few months... Anybody have any solutions or at least feel the same way?

Your doctor didn't tell you what all your allergies were? WTF kind of doctor is that? I think it would be more prudent to find out exactly what you're allergic to rather than trying to find a cure for mystery allergies.

Most doctors are crap with allergies, i have various allergies i'm not sure about but they basically tell you to do your own research because they are hard to pinpoint in some cases .

You should persevere with the neti pot, make sure the water is quite warm and you have enough salt in it (i put in a teaspoon in my steel pot). The times when it won't go through easily are the danger times when you really need to do it!. Even if you only get a little bit through, try doing that a few times in one day for a few days til it gets easier, then do it EVERY day.

Other things I do are use a saline ear cleanse spray from the chemist as I get blocked and plugged feeling ears (horrible ), and use petroleum jelly to put round your nostrils. Wash or wipe this off a few times a day if you can, then re-apply, it acts as a barrier.

Lastly, drinks tons of water - I need a bare minimum of 12 large glasses each day, it thins out the mucous.

Good luck with this, I have had problems since i was a small child and it's horrible. I can't sit in an overheated room, either, as the heat aggravates my sinuses, it really is annoying, isn't it?.

Pseudo-phed, maybe? (pseudo phedrine hydrochloride) [spelling?]

I got a netty pot thanks to cobweb's advice but I have the same problem that nothing goes through right when you really need it. Thanks though, CW, it helps.

I use this as my primary care doctor. Just punch in your symptoms and bingo! Diagnosis and remedies are suggested.

psuedo ephedrine i think it is, my son was prescribed that as a toddler as he also has multiple allergies, in particular dust mites. It made him crazy hyper (i am laughing remembering him zooming across the 5 acre field where we used to walk at full speed with energy to spare!)

glad the word of the neti is spreading

Yes, I knew of the neti due to Oprah lol...

Thanks for the advice! I really needed it, and I will persevere with the neti pot to see if it works. I'll check out the medicine since I've never heard of it before and I'm up for anything.

Today I could do nothing all day because of a horrible headache I had due to blowing my nose so much this week...

And yes, I can't be in overheated rooms either, I feel like I'm not a normal person at all sometimes, I can't even sleep over at friend's houses because I feel bad when I have to get up at all times of the night due to my allergies. Boohoo.

Also, the pseudo ephedrin, do I need a prescription for it? and if I do, is there anything like it that I could get over the counter? I just don't want to go to the doc lol

Go to a specialist!! I work for an ENT and he sees a lot of allergy patients, but I would go to an MD that specializes in just allergies. Can you ask your PCP for a referral?

It used to be totally OTC for decades but then when they realized people were buying bottles in bulk to illegally make (I think) crystal meth they then limited the quantities that could be sold and forced manufacturers to put the little red pills in blister packs so gathering hundreds of them at a time was a lengthy, laborious process. Of course the crooks then invented machines that could stamp out all 24 pills from the blister pack in a fraction of a second so they then moved to (and still use last I checked) a system where people have to show ID, their name gets recorded in a national database [big brother!] and they are rejcted if they try to buy too many within a 24 hour period, I guess. I'm not sure if being under 18 (or is it 21?) will pose a problem but anyhow it can't hurt to ask.

I buy generic ones at CVS but any drug store or pharmacy would have them.
It is not an allergy medicine per say but rather a runny nose/ congestion drier outer type of thing. Hope you feel better.
