We'll have to do like the poms and have a VF official meet-up.
I nominate Antony to be in charge, cause he's met the most of us, and he's a good organiser.

State where and when good sir, and we shall be there on the morrow (or thereabouts)

Combined Vegans Unite & VNV Christmas Banquet (VIC)

Come and celebrate Christmas/Summer Solstice, or simply the end of an exciting year at the combined Vegans Unite and Vegetarian Network Victoria December Banquet. The banquet will be held at Enlightened Cuisine, 113 Queensbridge Street, Southbank on Saturday 17 December. The venue is one of the most beautiful and elegant of all the meat-free restaurants in Melb, serving mock-meat dishes in the Chinese Buddhist tradition. In order to give this function a sense of occasion and to make it a little different from our normal social dinners, please dress as formally as you can. Please RSVP by emailing: melbourne@vegansunite.org.au - cost is $25 per head and everyone is welcome.

    Default Moving to Melbourne!!

Ok. I'm moving to Melbourne this summer to study at one of your very fine universities and I have a few questions:

    1. What suburbs have the best access to vegan eateries/shops? Fitzroy is a given, but would like to know other ones too, as I can't afford to live in Fitzroy!
    2. Not exactly a vegan topic but... What suburbs would ya'll recommend for searching for accommodation on a student budget? I've heard the western suburbs are generally cheaper than the eastern, is that true?

Thank ya'll. Will have more questions to come later

Imapeach, the closer you are to the city the more vegan options available in my experience, however, I live about an hour out of the CBD on the train and I still manage quite well i think. It just makes it all the more special when i do get to go out to an actual vegan restaraunt because i don't get to that often. I live in the South Eastern Suburbs and I'm fairly sure you could survive out here on a student budget, i mean it really depends where your going to be going to school and what transport you will have available. really like where I live though because it's far enough out of the city that it's not too busy, but its close enough that its not sooo far out of the way if that makes sense, plus its close to the beach and there is still lots going on down here, so check out the South Eastern suburbs

Thanks Claire! I actually thought the SE burbs would be too expensive - and I didn't even know there was a beach in Melbourne! The uni I'm going to is I think one suburb north of the city, so wherever I go it doesn't really matter, so long as it's near a train line to town (I don't have/want a car). And, call me crazy, but I actually really enjoy taking the train in Melbourne... it's like an adventure everytime!

The new trams we got in Adelaide remind me so much of Melbourne! Except people here are still trying to figure out how to open the doors

Sorry I should have clarified who I meant that for.

Hey cool, I'm a Melb Uni....there's a cool little shop nearby and it sells lots of wheat free, gluten free, vegan kind of stuff as well as an assortment of Toffutti products. YUM.

Oh and they have organic chocolate covered sultanas (vegan) at the Food Co op at Melb Uni which are AMAZING.

    Hope to see you around!!

    Hallo Ashee!
The KFC protest sounds ace - actually I've heard that Animal Lib Victoria runs a regular gig most Saturdays around lunchtime outside the KFC in Swanston Street, near Flinders Station. I've never gotten around to going (yet) - but I'm definitely keen. I've only just discovered the forum (hi everybody!) - funnily enough, I don't know any veg*ns at all (do they only exist in cyberspace?) and I'd love to meet up with anyone in Melbourne - maybe at Soul Mama in St Kilda, or Vegie Bar in Fitzroy?

A man threw a possum at me on the weekend - WHO THROWS A POSSUM?!?!
I was walking home through the park in Carlton on Saturday night, and saw this man holding a possum by the tail and swinging it around. There were about 30 other possums surrounding him - maybe they were planning to rescue their friend...
I went over to the guy and asked him to please leave the possums alone, I think he was a bit intellectually handicapped. But still, I didn't want him to keep abusing the poor fellas. He got really furious, pretended he had a Doberman that he was going to set on me. Then he said, "if you want the possum, here!" and threw the little creature at me. The possum bounced off my shoulder, then pelted up the nearest tree like lightning.
In hindsight, it would probably have been better not to tell him that I was calling the police, because then he started chasing me. It was hard not to laugh though, because everything was in slow-motion, him swinging his arms like a windmill while I was literally walking away. Actually I felt a bit sorry for the guy, because he probably didn't understand that what he was doing to the possums was wrong. He wasn't a criminal, but I wanted to get him away from the possums.
Anyway, just wanted to share the story with you all. Those possums are pretty hardy urban fellas, I'm sure they weren't too traumatised - I'm not sure what happened to the man though, or whether or not the police showed up eventually. It must be a tough life for native marsupials in the city jungle.

But I'm on the Padana Plain, with disgusting smog, a terrible climate, and Bologna is such a dirty, degraded city. I remember walking round Melbourne barefoot - if you did that here you'd step in something nasty. There's no public transport, and no nice coastline to speak of. There's so much energy in Australia, here we're anti-progressive at the best of times. Tuscany is nice though, Umbria is even nicer! Did you go there? Perugia, Assisi... Swap places...

Swap places? Not on your life! I know we're incredibly lucky down under - for most of us, it's a very cruisy lifestyle, relatively cheap, and these days there are so many jobs we have to import workers from overseas. It's not hard being vegan here, although Firenze wasn't bad for vegans either - I was living right in Piazza Mercato Centrale, heaps of beautiful fresh fruit and things.
I should point out though, we're not always so 'progressive' here in Australia, especially in terms of environmental policy. There's a bloody big sun above us which provides abundant solar energy, and infinite geo-thermal power underneath us, yet we still dig up uranium for export and now the government seems to think we should consider using nuclear energy ourselves. It's so stupid!
But I love Melbourne anyway - especially for the football! Wonder if I can convince the AFL to use synthetic footies?

    Default Two questions

So I was in the Big M last week visiting a loved one and planning my escape route :P

Walking around the CBD - I forget which street exactly sorry... maybe Elizabeth? - I noticed a store called Lush that sold makeup and beauty products. I was wondering if anybody knows if this is the same vegetarian Lush that PETA are always advertising? I'm curious as they had an ad in the window looking for casual workers and, as it happens, I am unemployed

Second question. I'm going to be living in Melbourne from this December onwards and don't have anything to do for Christmas as don't really know anyone there except my boyfriend. So can anyone recommend a charity or shelter that would need volunteers on Christmas eve/day? I'm really not fussed what we end up doing, so long as it's ethical and not completely focussed around consumerism!

    Cheers, Big Ears!

Default Health food markets in Australia

    Hello everyone!
I'm travelling from Canada to Australia soon and was wondering if anyone can suggest a good health food store in Melbourne,VIC that provides many healthy vegan foods! Also, if its close to public transit, that would be a bonus!
    Thank you so much!

I'm arriving this Friday at 8:30 am (if our flight is on time). I'm told it will be a bit late to visit Queen Victoria Market, as all the good produce is usually picked up early in the morning, but I'm hoping to get there bright and early on Sat so I can stock up on fresh fruit and veggies
I'm soooo excited! Any interesting festivals etc. coming up in the near future that you know of???

Hey Jasmine tea, welcome to beautiful Melbourne! If you're northside of the river, these are great places for organic and vegan-friendly things.

ORGANIC WHOLEFOODS: 277 Smith St, Collingwood 3065
    tel: (03) 9419 5347

FRIENDS OF THE EARTH: 312 Smith St, Collingwood 3066
    tel: (03) 9419 8700

There are heaps of like-minded people living around this area - Fitzroy, Collingwood, Carlton. I'm in Carlton North myself. How long are you planning to be with us? I don't know of any festivals in the near future, but the Wilderness Society is running a trip up to the high country in north Victoria to see the endangered forests if you're interested, November 17-18. The WS office is at 288 Brunswick St, Fitzroy (Level 2).
There are always great music gigs and film festivals happening too... hope you have a great time in the southern lands!
