It kind of makes me sick that they are willing to do this to fight "global warming" but not animal exploitation. They'll change their eating habits if they think they're helping other humans, but not if it requires them to give up privilege that every human has. It's the same f-ing thing required of them - change their diet - proving it's not difficult, and their only real problem is superiority complex over nonhumans.

    Okay, I'm just being cynical.

The funny thing is that no government cared about global warming very much until, like, last year.

I wonder if we could get some towns here to do the same thing? I might write to my MP about it as she has a somewhat pro-animal stance (even though she's a Tory).

I don't really mind about the reasoning they use; animals will benefit anyway and some people will no doubt start thinking more about what they do/don't eat and why.

There must be more veggie restaurants in Belgium than I remember, though!

I think it's pretty good news. I think the Belgian veggie soc were behind the initiative, and were motivated by other reasons but focused on health and eco reasons when promoting it. If people realise that they can enjoy veg*n food, then maybe they'll be more willing to listen to arguments in favour of going veg*n full time.

I guess the organisers still need to make sure those making the food have some good recipes and knowledge about veggie food - if they just serve up a boring salad we won't get many converts!

I originally went vegetarian for the environment, then vegan for pacifism and to stand against exploitation of our non human friends. So the environment was a good gateway and hopefully, it'll inspire many people to research where their food comes from and maybe in the long run, get a passion for non human animals too.

I'm sure they are - generates hits, letters or whatever it is that they want. Of course it's probably also that they can't think of anything more original to write about

I liked the Times piece: made the author out to be a 'meat head' but at least remotely accommodating. We get the sympathy vote.

Anyway, jibes are just an invitation to get our message out; bring 'em on.

Wow, that's great news about Ghent. I think it's good that it's for the environment reason because councils and politicians etc all loooooove to look green these days.

Not everyone wants to look sympathetic to animals, which sucks i know, but this also helps make the pro-veg enviro arguement even more mainstream!

Hopefully more places will follow, and Ghent doing it should make it easier to push other places into it.
