I want to make a nice thick vegan frosting, but the books i have say to use shortening but does anyone have any good recipies for ones with out this? as i'm finding it hard to find some good ones!!

The way I make thick frosting is to use a slightly greater proportion of icing sugar (silver spoon or tate and lyle) to marg, the thicker the better!
(Hope this is what you meant )
A really nice one is to add a tablespoon of very strong coffee mmmmmmmm *drool*
No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.
Also you can use the Search function if you like for lots of threads about shortening and alternatives (it's white Trex in the UK, readily available in supermarkets in the margarine section)

I'm not a cook, so I like easy mixes!
I basically use earth balance, confectionaire's sugar, vanilla, soymilk, and whatever flavoring I want (usually cocoa) for my frosting.
