Angry Discontinued vegan items in grocery stores

Just went to my local Trader Joes to get my weekly "fix" of Gardenburger's Riblets, only to discover that TJ's is no longer carrying this product

More and more as I shop at local stores, I find products that USED to be stocked that are no longer. Basics like bread without honey, soy yogurt, chocolate soymilk, frozen prepared foods etc.

Is it me or does it seem that vegan foods are getting the short shrift more and more at grocery stores?

well i can only speak for the small island i live on, but yes, it's certainly becoming a problem here, too . It appeared that lots of the vegan friendly stuff sold well, so i am confused!. I have written to one store to ask them about this, will see what they say.

trader joes always does stuff like that to me. there was a salad i used to get there and they discontuined it and now all of there salads have something bad in them...and there are TONS of salads...but they are getting better with marking what is Vegan and what isn't, but still read the ingrediants as they seem to think that honey is Vegan.

    Also whey.

They had a fruit/nut energy bar that was labeled SUITABLE FOR VEGANS on the front. But the ingredients listed "whey [milk]".

When I told the manager about this discrepancy, she looked at me like I had 10 heads and spoke Martian.

That's another item I noticed that has disappeared.

you'd think in this economic climate, that stores would bend over backwards to keep customers <shrug>

Probably depends on how well the product is selling in that particular store. I haven't been to a Trader Joe's in a long time but last I was there, in Santa Cruz, which is a pretty vegany/vegetariany town, they were adding more vegan products. They have their own brand of vegan ice cream, even, as I remember.

Hmm, I miss those vegan riblets. Those were good.

Well, at my local TJ's, they had a zillion containers of the soy chocolate cherry ice cream back in February (when it was a brisk 40 degrees outside).

Now, when it's over 100 degrees, they have NONE. Kind of backwards, huh?

The logic was probably: "Brrrrr, it's cold outside. Hmm, I wonder why no one's buying this ice cream. Guess no one likes ice cream. Let's take if off the shelf."

Actually they probably just got rid of the vegan ice cream to make room for the extra dairy ice cream that people are buying now that it's hot.

I've noticed it here too. My local supermarket used to carry Vegan Gourmet cheese in mozzarella and nacho flavour, carry Tofutti products, Amy's food, and more organic produce. Now they do not. I haven't been able to find Vegan Gourmet anywhere in my city and I really dislike having to go to my least favourite supermarket to get my Tofutti and Amy's stuff.

Not really, just that some of my staples (like the spicy lentil wrap) tend to go out of stock quickly, presumably because they weren't expecting me to buy it so much. But it comes back!

TJ seems to bring out products, get a market for them, and then negotiate with the supplier to have the item packaged under the TJ label. The soy ice cream was a perfect example. Made by Soy Delicious, (and it is soooo delicious!) and now they have the same thing but in a TJ container.

The riblet thingys are good but they are salty! I'm sure TJ will come out with a TJ package if they were a good seller.

I used to crave Nature's Path Organic Peanut Butter Gronola Bars with a passion. Unfortunately as of late I've noticed Railey's hasn't had them in a while. And now the space where they used to be are empty. They still carry the same company's cereal and EnviroKids Gronola Bars( Which sadly I cannot eat since I like to avoid products manufactured on shared equipment with other animal by-products ) but for some reason just stopped selling that certain product.
