Thread: Dairy for children "extends life"

Default Dairy for children "extends life"

    Overview-
They found those who had had high dairy and calcium intakes as children had been protected against stroke and other causes of death

Would anyone like to start listing the flaws with this study lol
    I'll start

researchers say they took into account that children with the highest dairy intakes came from wealthier families and ate better diets overall
I've also found a response from the Vegetarian and Vegan Foundation here, entitled "milk is not a magic bullet".

It would be interesting to see who was behind the funding of this research.

Well, I did some digging around and managed to get the full text article for this. Interestingly I found this at the very end of the paper....

Competing interests: RMB has been paid as an adviser to Numico and Schering Plough and has received sponsorship from Nestle, Mead Johnson, SHS, Nutricia, and SMA to attend conferences. He has also given presentations at meetings sponsored by Nestle, SHS, and SMA.

I saw that and I'd like to know what they mean by "took into account". If they mean "controlled for" then I'd like to know how they did it, because virtually all affluent children would have been stuffed with dairy produce in those days IMO, so it would have been quite hard to separate out affluence (and the other characteristics that go with it) as a confounding variable.

In fact the V&VF thing you found implies that they didn't control for it at all

That's the first thing my OH said when informed of this study - "Where's the control group?" I agree it all seems a bit dodgy!

Their researchers were funded by dairy product multinationals, what do you expect.

Longer lives doesn't necessarily mean healthier lives.

This misinformation was quoted in our county newspaper. How many more newspapers have spread these lies for free?

I have written to our newspaper pointing out their error.
