    Default The creepy crawly questions

Thought i would post something i havn't seen yet after an incident at work left me a little shocked.

Yesterday a spider was found in the work toilet. one of those big hairy ones that sneak in and hide in the corners. Turns out a whole family had infested the bathroom...
Someone came down requesting that another member of staff go in and "Kill" the spiders....

I volunteered to help get them out ethically....
But does anyone have a better method than the glass and flat surface?
And how many people just don't try at all?..and let these stuck arachnids die?

Now i have a phobia of spiders...like a lot of people..but i'm not gonna kill them because of it.

    We use one of these:

    http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/kitsc...her/index.html

They're extremely effective. Other than a few hurt feelings perhaps it doesn't seem to cause them any harm.

If you dislike huge spiders and live in an old house they're a perfect solution.

Whatever you do ensure that you rehome them quite far from where you've removed them from, otherwise you'll find they come back pretty quickly.

Funnily enough, one of the biggest spiders i've ever seen crawled right over my face the other day when i was sitting at the computer, lol.
I saw something out the corner of my eye and just thought my t shirt sleeve was blowin around, then felt it on my chin and mouth.
i suddenly realised i was inside and there was no draught, by this time the thing had ran right across my mouth and leapt onto my other shoulder and down my arm!!!!!

More to the point, im afraid that a lot of house spiders die if you put them outside because it's just not warm enough for them over night!!!
I tend to just leave mine and try not to think about where they are! lol!!!

I agree with leaving house spiders where they are if poss, although if MrGreen's colleagues are freaking out it may not be poss.

I have got a big garden-type spider (stripey legs etc) in my kitchen though and it doesn't look well. I would like to put it outside but am not sure how to get hold of it without harming it and I don't think I've got time to order any special gadgets. We've tried leaving the door open but it didn't go out. Maybe I'll see if it will run on to a paper...

ETA - that worked - I put papers on either side of where it was on the ceiling and so it ran on to one. I used the other paper to stop it running back up its thread, then put both papers outside. It seemed to be OK, as it ran off, so I hope it will be happier out there. Probably not a good method for phobics though!

The spiders have pretty much taken over our house. I was looking around recently at all the webs and thinking it looks like the Addams Family house. LOL. There have been a lot of baby spiders around which gets me nervous (for them) b/c they are so small and hard to see. The only time we put them out is if one is being harassed by the dog or cats, which isn't very often. Once we had a female w/ an egg sac who was sitting right in a door jamb so she had to be helped to a safer spot.

i pretty much let the spiders be in my house...but i remove the ones that freak me out. especially considering we have black widows in my area...*shudder*

i've seen little vacuums to remove bugs...but i just don't understand how it wouldn't hurt them....but it says its a humane way so I don't know...I just use the glass and paper method, or if its a harmless one ten to one I just scoop them up in my hand.

I've had a life long fear of spiders, but I'd never hurt one knowingly.

I now have to think about what to do about them if I can't place them outsider without hurting them due to the cold. Do you think they would be okay in/near a hot compost pile?

I think it depends on the type of spider. I tend to only rehome the huge ones, which I put in ivy down the road. When I cleared ivy off our house a few years ago I saw loads of HUGE ones of what appeared to be the same species, so I guess they're fine.

I like spiders. I find them fascinating. I leave them be in my home (there are loads) but tend to move them somewhere safe at work otherwise people squish them.

If a spider were to be in or on my toliet, I'd probably just use a small container to put it in and move it outside next to a tree or bush.
I figure it puts a little less stress on the spider that way, and avoids it from biting my behind. It's a win win situation at that point.

I'm not sure about where y'all are from, but here some of our spiders are highly venomous, so it's probably better if you're not sure to just leave the spider alone rather than risk getting bit.

I'm in the UK and the spiders are all harmless here although they can make you jump when the suddenly scuttle into view.

I've never tried gadgets, the best thing for the massive beasties is a wadge of tissues stuffed on the end of a long broom pole, gently touch the spider 'til it grabs on the tissue, then you can get it out the door or window before it could possible run down the pole!

I do this for ones that are near the bed (i.e., near my face while I sleep!), any others around the house I just leave. Got quite alot of them, but I'll only bug them (hahaha!) if they are in the shower or something and likely to get hurt. If I see one anywhere someone else might kill lit, I'll move it.

I've had a few spiders lay egg sacs, never hatched any eggs though, not sure why.

The best spiders are the ones in the shed, great fancy tunnel webs that they peek out of then run inside, really cool.

It's easy in UK, none are dangerous at all, unless they've sneaked in the country on a bunch of bananas or something.

we have loads of these in the house atm..every night one of the girls seems to be cackling hysterically that there is a spider about..it can get really funny..i favour the into a cup with a bit of paper idea if its to take them out of their rooms...or if the spider is downstairs i kind of leave it. i think it might be the same one..mahooosiv..even the cat jumped aside when the the spider scuttled across the kitchen floor!

we also have a very very pregnant looking one in her web just by the front door..watched her wrap up a juicy fly this morning omnomnom!
actually..re-reading what blue moon has put..we do use..errr..i don't know what they are called?? it's like a long bendy plastic stick with a really long bit of fabric on the end of it..with googly eyes on..it's like a toy..snake thing..we play with the cat with it..but the handle bit has a bit of fabric on it and the length is great for reaching the ceiling..the spider then cooperates by conveniently hopping onto the end and the stick can then be carried to a place of your choosing!

I've seen three spiders since I've moved into my new flat. One is tiny and lives on the tomato plant by the window where it feasts on flies. The other was on the ceiling above the bed one night and I had to remove it because my gf is really scared. The other was just legs hanging out of the cats mouth which makes me assume it was rather large.

I used to live in an old terrace house under a huge tree and we used to get HUGE spiders. I'm not too fussed as long as they aren't on me. Roxanne and Mouse used to have great fun eating them, much to my dismay. I swear their diet back then was mainly spider.

I'm quite happy to have bugs in the house aslong as they are not on me and if they are I run around like a five year old girl screaming and then outside to do a little shakey dance to get them off. I'm absolutely petrified of wasps.

I definitely have a phobia of spiders. Can't pinpoint why, I'm just terrified.

Although in recent years I've been getting better. I'm able to appreciate them (they really are pretty fascinating) and leave the ones alone as long as they are not near me or risk touching me.

As much as I don't care for them, I never kill them. My phobia used to be so bad that I would basically sob and have to have someone come and remove it... but these days I am much better, able to catch them on my own (provided they aren't too fast) and take it outside.

We have a spider-catcher device! (Though we use it for beetles, moths, bees, everything really.) It's basically a little plastic dome on the end of a stick (not a long enough stick in my opinion, though, haha) that you place over the spider/bug. The dome has a little sliding door, so once you get the spider inside, just slide it shut and voila, carry it outdoors! It's not foolproof though... if you're not careful you could hurt it's legs when you slide the door, so it's best to wait until it crawls up the side of the dome.

My cat isn't much for spiders any more. He's kind of a baby. He caught one once and it bit him on the nose... he hasn't bothered with them since, haha.

I'm the official Spider Catcher in the house, though I'm teaching the girls to do it.

We have a couple of types that tend to be outside in our garden, but a few sneak in. I'll leave the wispy, leggy ones alone if they are out of the way. The bigger, darker ones get escorted out.

Our window well has 2 striped spiders, and they've been busy having babies all summer.

I almost lost a foot to a brown recluse bite.....My first instinct is to kill them but then again their life is not mine for the taking. I let my daugher handle them, she puts them out on the porch.

You don't like your garden much do you?

Our wildlife gets rehomed to the nearby railway embankment. Loads of tasty stuff there.

where I'm staying most of the time there's spiders all over the place, they do a good job of keeping the midges away, in a bender when first built all the flies/midges etc are almost unbearable but within like a week they're all gone with the spiders there ..

It's getting that time of year when you have to walk about outside in the dark a lot. Yesterday I heard the *crunch* of a snail shell underfoot, and felt sad.
