Pirate food?

I'm throwing a pirate themed birthday party for my boyfriend in June. Can anyone think of some piratey vegan food, that doesn't involve alcohol and is buffet-style rather than main meals?

So far my lazy web searching has come up with skull-shaped sandwiches...

Treasure map pizzas, with sweetcorn footsteps and x-marks-the-spot peppers

Secret scroll spring rolls with tomato wax seals

Black spot pot pies or falafel or tofu patties - one has a ring or other token in, and the person who gets it has to walk the plank or perform some other forfeit

Seaweed made from pasta cooked with green food colouring

I think I read somewhere that you can get vegan chocolate coins. Also, along the same lines but much more expensive you could use edible gold leaf to make other things golden.

Or actual seaweed, or cabbage "seaweed" as served in Chinese restaurants without the fish stuff on top. How about fishless fish fingers? I feel sure pirates get through a lot of those.

There are various ideas about parrot-shaped cakes on the web and I'm sure a vegan version is theoretically possible, but it sounds like a lot of trouble. Perhaps just serve some Bombay mix and say it's parrot food

No, I just like food with a theme or that looks cute (as you'll know from my bento obsession for which I blame pavotrouge). Our theme for Christmas this year was "Food that makes you feel like a giant" (i.e. little tiny foods).

How about cutting carrots into discs rather than sticks for dips, and then they can be pieces of eight. Or you could cut the carrot lengthways and use a fish-shaped cutter to make carrot goldfish.

You could put Dandelion and Burdock or another less familiar soft drink into bottles like this and label them "grog":

heeeheeeheeeheeeheee - that is such a good idea! You could do limpets, too. I'm getting quite 'into' making chocolate things, and my new favourite website have chocolate seashell moulds. cakes, cookies and crafts They also sell gold foil, and I suppose you could make your own chocolate coins.

Aww she's adorable! I have a dachsie too - a mini smooth black & tan bitch called Ophelia. She too believes she can take on a 30lb rotweiler ...oh... and ankles. She's going to dress up as a pirate... and she's going to enjoy it damn it!

Yay!! I gave those to my class as part of their 'treasure' when we had a pirate day/treasure hunt.

I'm still stuck on the barnacles/limpets (hehe). I bet you could do loads of other foods to look like limpets, too. Like, something pastry-ish.
