Dreaming of Vegan Cake & cider

    Default Markets in London

Il be in London end of October and will have some time on a Fri afternoon and Sat and love markets,. I always seem to head to Camden (nothing to do with InSpiral's cake)

Wondering about visiting another market for a change.

Ive been to Portabello market years ago, wondering what Borough Market or Spitafields are like?

Id be interested in arts/crafts/foods like farmers market style products olives/jams etc but dont want to walk into one full of meat stalls

If anyones been can you let me know what you thought or if anyone knows of any good markets?

    Many thanks Alison:smile:

There's normally a stall at Spitalfields that does gorgeous vegan cakes and pizzas.
Blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer "extortion". The "X" makes it sound cool.

Really. I don't think I've been there since I was vegan.

Spitalfields is really best on Sundays.... (Was just there in fact. ) Don't know if you'll be here Sunday but Spitalfields/Sundays UpMarket (Old Truman Brewery)/Backyard Market (Sundays UpMarket & Backyard Market are both on Brick Lane) are my favorite markets in London. Of course I'm biased as that's my old neighbourhood and so they were just outside my doorstep so very convenient to me.... I think it's kind of dead on Saturdays usually, though (is Spitalfields even open?). I never went on Saturdays.

On Sundays, there's Rainforest Creations at Spitalfields, which does raw vegan food, including desserts. There's also vegan food (including my favourite, an Ethiopian stall) at the Sunday UpMarket at the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane. Flour Power City Bakery sometimes does vegan banana bread, and I've seen vegan "glass" cake as well.

I went to Portobello Market last year but preferred Spitalfields/Sunday Upmarket. I've not been to Borough...have always avoided it because I don't want to run into a bunch of meat stalls. I think there's an oyster stall somewhere near the food stalls in Spitalfields but other than that (which is pretty easy to avoid going near) I can't think of any meaty stalls.

Sorry, that was a bit rambling, but I get very excited by markets! Hope you have a good time wherever you end up.

OK, I checked this site and Spitalfields is closed Saturdays. It's open on Fridays (art & fashion stalls) but is smaller than Sundays. The other markets I mentioned on Brick Lane are only open Sundays.

I highly recommend the three markets at Greenwich, especially on a Sunday. And you can get the river bus there, or go on the Docklands Light Railway and then walk underneath the river in the Victorian Greenwich foot tunnel.

Yes, of course Greenwich market. I've only been there about 1 million times, how could I forget about it. I had some food from the Ethiopian stall there too. There is a little health food shop there as well that sells vegan sandwiches and cakes. (Laura range I think.) The beautiful Greenwich Park is another bonus.

Yes I would avoid Borough market as I was shocked at the number of meat stalls . I think Portobello market is better as you can always visit Planet Organic aswell.
