Vital wheat gluten in the UK

Up until now the only place Ive found to buy gluten powder was flourbin.com but his has worked out expensive. £1.85 per 500gm, a minimum order of 3kg and a postage charge around £6.
Now Ive found this......

That seems a good price. I've wanted to make seitan for ages. Hope they get it in stock soon. The only place i've seen it cheaper is if your buy 25kg for £36.00

Cool. I was thinking of using it mainly for sandwiches and alike. Maybe by experimentation coming up with something chorizo-like that I can use in pasta dishes, also.

Glad to be of service! I use the flour to make black bean steaks which I sometimes press into cracked pepper before frying. This Christmas I'm going to use the same mixture but roll it out thin, stuff with wild mushrooms and Toffutti cream cheese then roll n bake. I'm thinking a rich red currant sauce/gravy will finish it off perfectly.

Finally ordered some wheat gluten from the link to the lowcarbmegastore listed above. Was chuffed that it came the next day. Just tried out the link to the recipe posted by gutts. Quite impressed with how easy it is to make. Turned out pretty well too. The texture is great but I want to work on flavouring it a bit more to get it how I like it. Def worth giving it a go though I'd say.

I tried the simple boiling recipe (http://vegetarian.about.com/od/cooki...owToSeitan.htm) and then when boiled, i coated the pieces in cornflour and fried until crunchy. Heavenly!! I bought mine from ebay to save buying in bulk (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_t...All-Categories)

I get mine from the Flourbin - but I also order lots of flours as well - their flour is amazing, much better than the flour you buy in supermarkets, if you like making bread.

I highly recommend the Cotswold Dark flour, and the 5 grain and their Canadian flours are so good. Apparently most artisan bakers use Canadian flour - it is known to be some of the best in the world.

I put 10 in the quantity box and was told there's a max of 6 on this item - not sure if that's all that's left or it's a max per customer because it's under their special offers. I haven't bought them though, because there's a £4.50 postage charge on orders under £45, and I can't justify making a £45 order at the moment, since I'd probably make the rest up with chocolate

Seems Honest to Goodness do 1 kg and 1.5kg bags as well. I think I may have gone a bit overboard, I bought 6kg of the stuff! came to £17 something, but they've got a 10% off code on their front page as well at the moment, which makes it cheaper than the stuff posted in the link in the original post. Will have plenty to try different recipes with now!

I only bought 2 chocolate bars (and some chocolate shampoo and conditioner), the rest of the order to make it up to free delivery went on boring household cleaning stuff (but it's nice to get that delivered to the door too!)

I moan quite a lot about the lack of vegan products available to me in Spain BUT one thing I can get hold of really easily is VWG. And at less than 3 euro for half a kilo I always have a bag of it in my kitchen. A totally pointless post I know.......

I thought seitan was super popular amongst veggies, vegans and health nuts alike so when I went into H&B and asked if they had any Vital Wheat Gluten to be greeted by a 'durr-look' and "you mean wheat flour? gluten is in wheat". Even when I went on to explain that it's flour with the starch removed, which is used in making seitan and such they still had no idea what I was talking about and thought I was making it up or something.

People in health food shops are often a bit clueless, don't you find? H&B of course sell seitan themselves in the form of tins of "mock duck". Suppose they are more used to people asking for gluten-free this and that though.

Holland and Barratt were useless when I asked for nutritional yeast flakes! They thought I meant Marmite! I asked in my local health food shop, Beanies in Sheffield, about Vital Wheat Gluten. It's usually pretty good but they'd only vaguely heard of vital wheat gluten. I'm tempted by some of these websites though, as the sausages in Vegan Brunch look so nice.
