Default Fox's Dark Chocolate Chunkie Cookies

Exciting news biscuit fans, I just emailed Fox's to enquire about their dark chocolate "chunkie" cookies, which claim that they "contain" (not "may contain") Cows Milk.

    The reply i got was:

"The cows milk may be present in the dark chocolate as dark choclate is
produced on a line which also produces milk choc. "

So it would appear it is just an allergy notice.

According to Ocado the ingredients list is:

Wheatflour, Dark Chocolate Chunks (19%), Vegetable Oil, Sugar, Dark Chocolate Drops (9%), Oatmeal, Partially Inverted Refiners Syrup, Desiccated Coconut, Glucose Syrup, Molasses, Raising Agent: Disodium Diphosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Ammonium Bicarbonate, Salt, Flavouring, Emulsifier: Soya Lecithin, Dark Chocolate Chunks contain Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Cocoa Butter, Emulsifier: Soya Lecithin, Natural Flavouring, Dark Chocolate Drops contain Cocoa Mass, Sugar, Fat-reduced Cocoa Powder, Dextrose, Emulsifier: Soya Lecithin, Natural Flavouring

Oh dear These sound lovely, but I've been boycotting G&Bs for saying "contains..." so I've now got a decision on whether I keep doing that... if I'm gonna do it, I'll do it consistently!

G&B have milk actually listed on the ingredients though. They could suddenly start putting milk in intentionally and you wouldn't be any the wiser, so the Fox's things are a step up from that.

I always avoid the things that say 'contain milk' because I (seemingly incorrectly) assumed that some of the flavourings, or other trace ingredient, was sourced from milk.

Yeah, I know... my reason for that plus anything saying "contains" is because I think it sends a mixed message about what vegans do/don't eat - but I digress and I'm taking this OT (sorry Mr F - was thinking out loud and probably shouldn't have done!)

I might give in and buy these anyway - they sound yummy

Just back from Morrisons with 3 packs of these! They were half price at 74p so it seemed wrong not to indulge

Had two cookies on the way home, very nice. Could quite easily work my way through a pack very quickly

When we used to have a Somerfields they stocked them.

I found some in Kingston Waitrose today. £1.59 for 10 cookies. I thought they were okay but I'm not best qualified to review them as I'm not a big biscuit fan (I prefer cakes or soft cookies).

Subject: RE: foxs-biscuits.co.uk - new comment

    Dear ****,

Thank you for your enquiry. Extremely Chocolatey Cookies are suitable for vegetarians but not vegans as per the packaging.
As milk powders and to a lesser extent eggs are widely used to enrich biscuits not many are suitable and these are listed below.

    Ginger Snaps
    Stem Ginger Crinkles

    Yours sincerely

But why wouldn't milk be listed as an ingredient if it is an actual ingredient used for 'enriching' the biscuits? I'm so fed up with these companies giving a different reply to each person asks.

I've e-mailed them again today about the dark choc chunkie cookies. It's just confusing it says contains milk when the ingredients listed DON'T contain milk, 'may contain' I could understand

Anyone clarify that these ingredients are ok?

wheatflour, dark choc chunks, sugar, veg oil, dark choc drops, oatmeal, partially inverted refiners syrup, dessicated coconut, glucose syrup, molasses, raising agent: Disodium Diphosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Ammonium Bicarbonate. Salt. Flavouring. Emulsifier: Soya Lecithin.
Dark choc chunks contain sugar, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, emulsifier: soya lecithin, natural flavouring.
Dark choc drops contain cocoa mass, sugar, far reduced cocoa powder, dextrose, emulsifier: soya lecithin, natural flavouring.
Dark choc drops made with cocoa solids 75% minimum.

    >Dear Alison,
Thank you for contacting us about our Dark Chocolate Chunkie Cookies. Fox’s Biscuits has a very long tradition of baking high quality products and we are proud of our quality standards.

The chocolate chunks may contain traces of milk protein. In addition, the product is made in a factory, which uses dairy ingredients.

    I hope this helps.

I get the impression that the 3 people who have responded from Fox's simply don't know the answer either way, which is a bit rubbish.

Yes, but as we don't know for sure I wouldn't feel happy buying them again, the chocolate may or may not have milk in Shame they're so vague though I don't know why they can't speak to the manager of the factory who make them and ask if there's milk in the chocolate or not, how difficult can it be?! They're delicious too...

WHAT?! MAY contain TRACES because of the manufacturing process. The recipe is both intentionally and coincidentally milk-free. It just happens that the line manufactures milk-containing products, and therefore may contain minutae of dairy. Unless you're allergic, I don't see why you wouldn't consume this product.

Well her reply to me didn't say because of the manufacturing process, what she said was >The chocolate chunks may contain traces of milk protein. In addition, the product is made in a factory, which uses dairy ingredients <

So it's not just that they're made in a factory with milk products, the choc may actually have milk in it.

I think if it was just the manufacturing proccess she wouldnt have said to me the 'chocolate chunks may have traces of milk protein,' cos if it was the manufacturing process then the whole biscuit may contain traces, if you see what I mean, hmm..Shame they can't just say for sure whehter the choc has milk in or not

    I don't do 'contains'.

To me 'may contain' is a possibility and unintentional. 'Contains' is a certainty and intentional.

My purchases are votes, and I'm not voting for products that say they contain milk on them.

If it was 'contains beef' instead of milk would any of you still buy it?

I agree, it's not the same as may contain, and in this case the woman said to me there may be milk in the chocolate, as an ingredient, I won't be buying them again.

Milk powders and to a lesser extent, eggs are widely used to enrich our biscuits.
Please find below the list as requested:-

    Thank you,

Are the dark chocolate chunk cookies not vegan? There doesn't appear to be any animal products in the ingredients? If it's a case of possible cross contamination then they would still be vegan as veganism is not an allergy.

    thanks,
The chocolate chunks may contain traces of milk protein so that is why we put the warning on the packaging.
    So they are vegan then?
We dont make claims that any of our products are 'vegan'. We can only inform you of what is in/not in the products.

This really winds me up, why cant they just give a simple yes or no? I might email them in a few days, if enough people get in touch they might get fed up and give us a definitive answer. Its especially frustrating when they already admit some of their products are suitable.
