    Default Favorite oatmeal/porridge additions

I think a lot of us will be eating more oatmeal now thanks to a different thread so I thought we could share our different variations to get new ideas and keep it interesting.

    Mine are:

    PB and banana

Apple and cinnamon: put the apple in while cooking to get all soft. It tastes like apple pie (kind of)

I put bananas in (almost) everything, including oatmeal. Also walnuts. And flax oil. And berries.

Every day I put in my millet-flake porridge - banana, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, ground almonds, flaxseed and cinnamon. Occasionally, I will chop up some dates into it, too.

Nom! Oh, and I make it with soy milk.

I usually eat instant oatmeal with soy milk (vanilla or chocolate) or orange/grapefruit juice and add soy lecithin to it because I don't get enough choline without it (i use a nutrient tracking program). I like cooked (not rolled) oats with raisins, cinnamon and walnuts.

mmmmmmmm my daily porridge! love how it keeps me full till lunch, like nothing else!

first of all, made with almond milk or hazelnut milk - deeeeelicious!
plus: cinnamon, flaxseed, walnuts, raisins, toasted flaked almonds, some vegan margerine or crunchy peanut butter, dash vanilla extract (especially if i use soy milk).
occasionally i'd indulge in some cut up strawberries, or, more commonly, apple.

oh, how i want some right now!

Prunes. It tastes better than it sounds and they are quite nutritious.

I usually stick a dollop of strawberry jam in the middle of porridge, when i was a lot younger i liked it with sugar on top but now thats too sweet. The prunes and apple ones sound well nice!

mmm cook it with some chopped apple in and plop a few prunes ( like tinned in fruit juice) on top - lovely!

...sometimes i like to chop dates up small when cooking it - gives it a lovely caramel flavour without extra sweetening needed.

i also add a pinch of salt nowadays too - i like the slight sweet/savoury thing that goes on.

Apparently Scottish people put lots of salt in porridge - is this true? And is it nice? Sounds disgusting! And has anyone ever added cheese to porridge? Again something I'm pretty apprehensive to try but I've heard good things :S

A pinch of salt in your porridge is good. It enhances the flavour. No more than a pinch though - you don't want it to taste salty. Haven't heard of cheese in porridge. My father used to tell me that his grandfather who was a farmer used to make a big batch of porridge and pour it into a drawer to set. He would then cut slices of it off each day to take with him when he went out to tend the sheep. I suppose it is like the Italians with polenta so no reason why it shouldn't be used as a savoury.
