    Default Allium intolerance :(

    Does anyone else suffer?

A lot of things I find that are vegan have onion/garlic in them, which is so frustrating for me!

I suppose a lot of food whether it's vegan or not will have onion or garlic in it..........it seems to be very popular in cooking generally.
The best about being vegan though is you can cook your own dishes and leave out the onion or garlic if you find it doesn't agree with you. There are lots of other lovely spices and herbs you can add to food to enhance the flavour. I love using ginger or chilli for example.
It must be a nuisance for you though.

Do you do much cooking from scratch?

Can't you have any at all, LM? I find if I have a lot of onions etc (especially raw) it upsets my innards, but if I just have a little bit it's OK.

I do quite a lot of stuff from scratch, but it's just if I want to buy certain things!

If it's something like onion powder in something, then sometimes it doesn't bother me but any kind of garlic is a no no, and yes leeks hurt me too lol.

Do you mean ready made meals?

What did you do before you were vegan?

I had the same trouble being vegetarian! Things such as soup, instant noodles, and the Linda McCartney stuff that is vegan has garlic in most of it.

I don't have an allium intolerance but I have been recommended to go on a low-allium diet due to slightly raised transaminase (liver enzyme) levels in my bloodwork. It's nothing serious but I'm going tp keep an eye on it for the next couple of months. I will report back any interesting low/no-allium findings.

Look up Hare Krishna recipes, they avoid alliums.

    Have you tried asafoetida?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asafoetida

Seems it can be used instead of alliums, to aquire similar taste. I just bought some, haven't tried it yet.

I was thinking that. I will do, it'll be a chance to use more of my spice collection!

I haven't tried it but I have heard that about it. I will have to find it and give it a go!

Smelly feet spice! Would use sparingly initially.

I'm sure that's not how they market it! .

I have cut back a bit on onions and garlic but as a compromise I decided to cut back more on fats and caffeine more than alliums, and also try to manage stress levels and see if my transaminase levels go down in my next blood test.
