They are according to this blog, but living in a country where we don't get tater tots (I don't think), I have no idea how many brands there are. http://webcache.googleusercontent.co...w.google.co.uk
You might get a more accurate response from the lunch lady if you ask to see the packaging? That's what I do if the servers don't seem to know what animal products are (like thinking cocoa butter isn't vegan, because it's got the word butter in there).

tator tots are my life. i have yet to find any that aren't vegan. which is lovely.

Do you know, I always had it in my mind that tater tots were candy. How wrong was I?!

I hadn't heard about Tater Tots before reading Adam's thread.......................now I want some!

*GOOGLE CHOP!*
Hmm, yeah, I also thought they were a candyfied nom of some sort. Prefer the thought of the reality though

I can't believe you guys!!! how did you live!?!? Its so funny, cause they are super common here. like sold in cafeterias at schools.

And do you know - see, this is what I'm like - I only got the link between tater and potato after discussing it avidly with my partner whilst we were walking home last night. After all these years of hearing of tater tots but never really looking in to them. I said, after about 10 minutes discussion about the whole thing, "Ohhh! I get it now! Tater! Potato! I seeeee!" and then I realise I am walking on my own. I turn around to see my partner staring at me, wide-eyed and open-mouthed. "Are you serious? You never got that?"
Doh!

I hope Adam's enjoying eating the tater tots at school, now he knows they're vegan. Let us know, won't you Adam?

Thanks, leedsveg I really am such a doof sometimes.
And I'm now going to have to try making tater tots, aren't I?
"You're right, Jackie. The Fonz could beat up Bruce Lee."
Yum! I adore tater tots!
*groan* I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for any more puns...
"You're right, Jackie. The Fonz could beat up Bruce Lee."

I had to look up tater tots, but it seems they are a kind of miniaturised hash browns - sauté speak!
^Ha ha! Love it! lol

I get my humour from living (in Leeds) just up the road from Kirkstall Abbey. Used to be quite a lot of fryers there, but they all turned into chip-monks, once Sir Walter Raleigh arrived with a sack of spuds.

Oh, is that what they are? The penny drops.

They do look yummy!
Afraid I have no more puns to offer. Or good ones, rather
"You're right, Jackie. The Fonz could beat up Bruce Lee."
...so it's a case of aloo and goodbye, is it? Potatoes don't seem to be quite such a fertile source of puns as, say, fish, so I'll stop waffling on.
I'm surprised these tater tots haven't made it across the Atlantic, if they haven't - we seem to have every other possible variety of potato-based snack.

You give in too easily harpy. I thought you may have mentioned the regal potato connections, namely:
The Jersey Royal
The King Edward
and The Dave E. Croquette (well he was known as the King of the Wild Front Ear)
(I'll get my coat and quietly leave...)

I don't think I can take any more...
Oh, go on. Keep 'em coming!

I resign, before I get pun-ished by Korn for being so off topic. Does anybody know a vegan shallow-fry recipe for tater-tots so that I can have a try at making them?
Leedsveg
Me too, I've run out of, er, puff.
I suspect the point of tater tots is to be bought in a packet, but I saw this recipe http://www.grouprecipes.com/50365/tater-tots.html which suggests baking them as a healthier alternative to frying. When I try to fry things like that they always fall apart anyway.
Thanks harpy. I'll give it a try. I've tried baking homemade chips (fries) but they didn't taste as good as supermarket oven chips. Although we've not had a deep fat fryer for years, and I know they're not healthy, I do think they give a nicer taste.
leedsveg
Must admit I quite like home-made oven chips. I leave the skins on, make the pieces fairly large, and toss them in a bit of olive oil and paprika (or cayenne pepper if feeling bold - not too much of it) first.
I suppose they're not that much like chips really, but they're still good.
I always bake them, never fried

I love making homemade chips. I don't use a deep-fat fryer but just an ordinary chip pan. I cook the chips for a few minutes turn off the heat and leave them for 5 minutes then turn the heat up full blast. That way you get lovely crispy chips!
