    Thumbs up Easter eggs

Ok, so you may not celebrate Easter, but you may well not want to miss out on vegan Easter eggs. I found this list for you's on VEGAN FAMILY.

    UK Easter Goodies

Chunky dairy-free eggs - colourful foil wrapping, about the size of a 'creme egg', available in health food shops.

Green and Blacks Maya Gold Easter Egg (organic and fair traded) - about £2.89 from health food shops and some supermarkets - a good sized egg, boxed and wrapped in gold foil - this wins our "best buy" though the chocolate is quite strong tasting which some children might not like

Green and Black's Dark Chocolate Egg

Kinnerton Eggs available this year (2005):
Simpsons Dairy Free Egg available in Wilkinsons of Jersey, Sugro Buying Group and P & H McLane Ltd
Luxury Dairy Free Egg and Bar at Waitrose, Woolworth’s, Wilkinsons of Jersey and P & H McLane
Simpsons/Groovy Chick Dairy Free Egg (displayed in a mixed case) from Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Woolworth’s

Stamp Collection Organic Dairy Free Bunny (larger Tesco stores have this)

Siesta carob egg and foil wrapped chuckle bunnies (health food shops)

Walkers Chocolates produce a pack of 3 mint eggs (about the size of a creme egg) - sold for around 59p in Wilkies and other discount shops.

Fun Bunnies - orange flavour carob bunnies - available in many health food shops at £1.50 for a pack of three

Lindt solid 70% cocoa mini eggs (available in many supermarkets) - gold foil wrapping (there is a chance of cross contamination with most companies that make milk chocolate too - this applies to Lindt and Elizabeth Shaw below).

Elizabeth Shaw - 365g Mint Crisp Egg and the 440g Dark Chocolate Egg with Mint Creams are free from dairy and egg ingredients.

Whizzer's mini eggs (available in health food stores, some branches of Sainsbury's and the Veganstore below) - about 69p

Booja Booja do a large egg with truffles for about £10 - the Hazelnut Crunch Rocher and Around Midnight Expresso varieties are vegan - available from health food shops and Animal Aid below.

The Veganstore always have a good selection for Easter.

Animal Aid now sell Cocoa Tree vegan creme eggs!.

If anyone has any others to add to the list, no matter what country you're in, do post em. A link would be magic.

I think in Australia, the Go Natural Lactose Free Easter Eggs are vegan

Sweet William have a 'soy chocolate' Easter Bunny - I saw it at the health food shop.

I don't do easter for any biblical reasons as all that religion stuff is not my bag but I do like the odd egg .

Here is also another tip to add to gertvegans list of egg tricks, If you are in the creative mood you can save a few quid by making your own as well.

The egg moulds which are just plastic or metal can be bought at most cook shops , the choccy well I always use G & B stuff it works great, just pour in the mold and then join the two halves with more choccy bingo, from a G & B bar the large ones you can get about 2 -3 eggs which is far cheaper, you can also fill the middle of the egg with vegan sweets.

    Have fun egging eggless eggs
Go confidently in the direction of your dreams

I splashed out and bought a Booja Booja egg on friday, thought about who to give it to yesterday, and ate it today. Its the thought that counts.

mmmm chocolate!! I cant wait until easter! I usually go crazy and buy loads of chocolate eggs, get given loads from my family and friends and eat them all at once! This usually ends with me being covered in chocolate and feeling very ill soon afterwards. Why cant i be a "everything in moderation kinda girl" instead of a "all the shops are full of eggs so must buy and eat all of them at once kinda girl"!

I have thought about Vegan Easter eggs for Jade. I will have to check out what is available in the USA or perhaps make some myself.

Montezumas also have easter goodies like the Giant Egg, the Spice It Up Easter Egg, Cheeky Bunnies, and the Chunky Dark Egg (with dairy free truffles). Or you could create an easter egg with dark organic chocolate for a mere £40 .

I'm obviously an Easter-Grinch, but what does everyone do at Easter if they have kids to buy for (other people's I mean)? I've got to buy something for my cousin's kids and for some reason, my Mum's cousin's child and I resent feeling I have to buy them a milk chocolate egg, but I know that if I get them a small toy or money or something instead, then I'll have to keep it up as they get older (i.e. giving them more expensive gifts or more money). I'd also feel a bit odd giving them vegan eggs as I know the kids probably wouldn't like the dark chocolate for a start and secondly, the parents would be very frosty with me for inflicting my beliefs on their children.

if you stole the milk chocolate egg you wouldn't be contributing to the suffering of animals. not that i condone stealing *shrug*

just give them a carrot or something, if it's good enough for the easter bunny it's good enough for them

Evilfluffbunny, if you can't find easter eggs that aren't dark chocolate, I personally would do up a little gift box/basket with vegan chocs in it. Too bad if people whinge about you imposing your beliefs. I refuse to give my money to things I don't support and, let's face it, chocolate is chocolate to kids!! Sweet William chocolate is fantastic or Green and Blacks maybe.... If you're expected to buy for them, they'll get what they're given

I don't think you are inflicting beliefs - you are just complying with your own ethics. You are not telling them to be vegan by giving them vegan eggs. I only buy Robert vegan chocolate, but he buys dairy chocolate for himself.

Evilfluffybunny - go online to Veganstore and get some 'Whizzers' mini-eggs for the kids. Don't mention that they're Vegan, I'm sure the kids will enjoy them!

That would go down well! Maybe if I painted smiley faces on them it would work.

The vegan chocolates or mini eggs are a good idea, I'll see if I can get some and not eat them before Easter comes.

Among the specialist vegan easter egg section in tescos I found their own brand "free from" easter egg, claiming to be free from dairy etc.

On close examination it turned out NOT to be free fom pork gelatine

    Dear EFB and all-
Pangea (www.veganstore.com) has more than just Whizzer's choc eggs. They have chocolate truffle eggs, coconut carrots and jellybeans!! They also have an assortment of chocolate Easter bunny figures. There is also a company in New Jersey that would ship to Europe. It is called Rose City Chocolatiers (www.rccholatier.com). They have the most scrumptious Vegan Belgian chocolates, and also have nice Easter basket stuff. Check it out, but act quickly for over-seas delivery!

To put my 2cents in: I also think we Vegans should not buy stuff that contains animal products for gifts. It is giving money to our animal-oppressor friends!

Do you mean it had jelly sweets inside or was it the actual egg? That really bugs me when you think you've found something vegan and it's not!

Yeah, my daughter noticed the dead animal hidden in the Tesco 'free from' eggs.

I think it's VERY misleading, the way they're packaged, and I can well imagine unsuspecting grannies buying them for their veg*n grandchildren, thinking they were OK.

In fact, I felt like sticking labels on the outside of the boxes saying 'not free from dead animals'. I think I'll complain to Tesco.

Making your own Easter eggs is fun, though. Last year my daughter bought moulds from 'The Home Chocolate Factory' and made her own. They've got lots of different moulds for animals, eggs etc. and you can use whatever chocolate you like. The turtles are very cute.

Does anyone see the irony in trying to find vegan chocolate in the shape of animals and eggs??

    Dear Leigh:
You know I was afraid to mention it - but since you did, I will, too. I just won't eat chocolate in animal shapes. When I was a baby, and my parents gave me an Easter basket with a chocolate bunny and duck, I cried my eyes out and refused to eat the chocolate animals! My parents thought I was cute but flipped!!
Now as an adult and a Vegan, I surely won't touch chocolate animals. It still seems wrong. The chocolate eggs--well- that's another matter.....

Why is it wrong to eat a CHOCOLATE animal????? And why, if you object to that, is a chocolate egg okay???
The Lamb and the Egg just symbolise Eostre, the traditional 'Easter' festival/Goddess, and the re-birth of life after the hard Winter.

It was the sweets accompanying the egg that contained the gelatine and so could be avoided if purchased by mistake.

But, what a waste of energy. If someone in Tescos had their brain in gear that "free from" egg could have easily been a completely vegan product and therefore have a wider selling potential. grrrs to tescos

    Dear PinkFluffyCloud:
Please don't think I was saying it is "WRONG" to eat Chocolate animals-- I was just replying to Leigh's comment on the irony of Vegans eating choc animals and eggs. This is just a personal thing of mine, since I love animals. I just don't feel comfortable eating choc animal figures. We, Vegans, try to do our best for animals, so any Vegan eating a Vegan choc animal figure is just fine by me! I'm not judging anyone here...

I wasn't judging, either, it's just that Vegans (me included) seem to get a bit too hung about things sometimes, - but I generally find that fairly amusing (and irritating at times! ). I think Easter is another big rip-off so I won't be buying into it, anyway. I'd rather take my son on a day trip in the holidays with the money, instead.

    Dear PinkFluffyCloud:
Now, you are certainly "singing my song", too! I really hate how the holidays are just excuses for getting the masses to spend their money on some product that is supposed to make the holiday "meaningful". Christmas is the worst, but Easter is also up there, too! Here, in the States, it seems nothing is any good anymore, unless you spend lots of money on it!!
I don't have kids, just 8 cats, so I can better resist the hype. I think your idea of doing something with your son, rather than "buying into" the traditional Easter treat thing, is more meaningful and certainly healthier for him, too. I bet he remembers the time he spent with you on Easter more than what stuff he might have eaten from an Easter basket.

For those in the UK, if you see a Maya Gold Easter Egg or Dark Chocolate Egg from Green and Black's, buy it. A chappie from Fresh n Wild told me that they had under estimated just how well they were going to sell.

i was pleased to see in Sainsbury's today, two vegan Easter eggs from Kinnerton, one with Bart Simpson on the front and one girly pink one, both only £1.50 each, and both saying 'Suitable for vegans' on the front of the box, in really big letters!!! really pleased to see vegan Easter eggs affordable and appealing for everyone.
